Inventor witnesaes Attorneys ,AJRUHVIBALD SMITH, or
LATCH FDR GATES, BARNQDEDOJEES,
and useful Latch for Gates. Barn-Doors,
Q'lttc, of which the following a specification.
The present invention latches, and aims to improved latch for doors, and the like.
It is the specific object oi the invention to provide in connection with a latch bolt, novel means for locking it in projected position.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a latch device which can be readily applied to various gates, doors and the like.
appertains to provide a novel and use upon gates, barn and which is not only extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, but which is also thoroughly eilicient and practical for its intended purposes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can he made Within the scope of what is claimed with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the device \viththe latch bolt projected and locked.
Fig. 2 is" a similar view with the latch bolt retracted and released.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4% of Fig. 1.
Inthe drawing. the numerals 1 and 2 designate two arbitrary parts which are movable relative to one another out of a common plane. For example one of said parts can represent a gate post and the other a gate, or one or both parts may rep resent the door of a barn, or the like.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a horizontal slidahle latch bolt 3, preferably formed from a bar, and mounted for horizontal sliding movementagainst one. side of the part 1, vertical guide straps Specification of Letters Patent.

or other-- wise to the part 1 and having offsets 5 hetween their ends through Which the latch bolt 3 is slidable. A ring-shaped or other suitable handle 6 is attached to the latch bolt in order that it can be readily slid, and a similar handle is provided at the opposite side of the part land has a shank 9 working within a horizontal slot 7 with which the part 1 is provided, and said shank riveted or otherwise secured to the latch bolt 3. The handles 6 and 8 permit the latch bolt to be projected and retracted from opposite sides of the door or part 1. hen the latch bolt 3 is projected, it overlaps the part 2, and when it is retracted, the parts 1 are released in order that one of them can be moved relative to the other.
.sis a means for lockingthe latch bolt 3 in projected position, the rear or heel end thereof is provided with an outstanding; apertnred car 10 for cooperation with a swingable detent 11, preferably formed from a bar, having one end pivoted. as at 12, to that side of the part 1 at which the latch bolt 3 is disposed. The detent 11 is pivoted in order that when the latch bolt 3 is pro jected, the detent 11 can be swung into alinement with the latch bolt 3, with the free end of the detent i abutting the rear end of the latch bolt. The free end of the detent 11 is provided with an onttnrned apertnrecl car 13 to complement the ear 10, and the car 13 has an angularly extending flange or stop 14 to contact with the car 10 when the detent is swung into alinement with the latch bolt 3, whereby to properly limit the movement of the detent. As illustrated, the detent 11 is arranged to swing upwardly to releasing position, and downwardly to lee/lo ing position. The detent It}. can be readily raised from the corresp nding side of the part 1 to permit the latch bolt 3 to he retracted, and in order to permit the detent 11 to he raised from the opposite side of the part 1, said part is provided with an arcnate slot 16 and a ring-shaped or other suitable 18 working Within the slot 16 and secured to the detent 11. This handle 17 can be readily raised for releasing the detent 11 from the latch bolt 3.
A vertical strap 19 is secured able manner to the part 2 and has an offset 20 providing a keeper for receiving the end of-the latch when it'is projected, in order to latch the parts 1 and Qtogether. To
in any snitunlatch the parts 1 and 2, the detent 11 is raised, which permits the latch bolt 3 to be retracted, and the detent Will then rest upon the rear or heel end of the latch bolt 3. As soon as the latch bolt is rojected, the detent will drop in rear thereo and hold it in projected position. A padlock 15 can be readily applied to the ears 10 and 13 for locking the latch bolt in place.
1. Having thus described the invention, What;
is claimed as new is The comblnatlon with a door, of a latch bolt at one side thereof, guides for the latch bolt carried by the door, the latch bolt be-' ing projectable beyond one edge of the door, the door having .i-elot behind the latch bolt, a handle secured L0 the latch bolt and projecting through sazd slot to the opposite. side of the-door, a detent pivoted to the door at the first mentioned side beyond the rear end of the latch bolt and swingable into alinement with the latch bolt when it 1s and a handle secured to the detent and prothe arcuate slot to the 0pjecting through posite side of the door.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
