Unrrnn S'm'rns Earnn'r @rrron PHILIBETOHES AND JAMES D. WILSON, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED APPARATUS FOR SAW-MiLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,044, dated April 23,1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PHILIP ETGHES and JAMES D. WILSON, of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed Apparatus for Saw-Mills; and we do declare that the following is atrue and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which our improvement is shown in side elevation.
This invention relates to an improvement in the feed-pinions of saw-carriages, having for its object to prevent the frequent breakage of the feed-racks on the under side of the carriage, and to produce a more steady motion of the carriage in feeding and gigging; and consists in the employment of two pinions meshin g with the rack under the carriage, actuated by an intermediate gear on a shaft placed between them, to which motion is given for feeding and gigging the carriage.
In the drawing, A represents a portion of one of the sills of a saw-carriage, and B the toothed rack on the under side thereof. C is a portion of the mill floor, and D the feedshaft, journaled in suitable boxes bolted thereto, and which shaft is rotated by a belt on its pulley E through the mechanism usually em- F and F are counter-shafts journaled in suitable boxes, likewise bolted to the floor, said shafts being disposed one at either side of the shaft D, and parallel therewith. On the counter-shafts are secured the feed-pinions G G, both meshing with the rack 13, and actuated by an intermediate gear, H, on the feed-shaft.
Heretofore the saw-carriage has been moved back and forth by a single pinion on the feed shaft, meshing with the rack B, from which much trouble, expense, and annoyance have arisen by reason of the frequent breakage of the teeth in the raclr sections, due to the fact that not more than two teeth of the rack would be in gear with the pinion at a time, and would give way under the sudden strain thrown upon them in gigging back. This objection is fully overcome in our device, as there will at all times be five or more teeth of the pinions in gear with those of the rack, and proportionally divide and distribute the strain.
This arrangement also in sures greater steadiness in the movement of the carriage.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the feed-pinions G and G with the intermediate gear H and the rack 13, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown, for the purposes set forth.
PHILIP ETOHES. JAMES D. WILSON. Witnesses:
