To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES M. EVLETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Articles of Wearing- Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an article of wearing apparel resembling a sweater, a sweater vest, a sweater coat or'any garment used for encompassing and protecting the body of the wearer. Articles of wearing apparel, such as above set forth have usually been made of knitted wool, which are laborious to make by hand, and which are expensive to make by machinery.- They do not thoroughly protect the body, unless composed of closely knitted heavy yarn, which is expensive. These objections are overcome by my invention, which produces a simple, inexpensive and warm article of wearing apparel, which can be easily and quickly made by hand.
In the accompanying drawing forming part ofthis specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved article of wearing apparel, when resembling in form a sweater vest; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing one of many alternative constructions, which may be employed.
My improved article of wearing apparel is composed of a front member A and a back member B, said members being of substantially the same outline, excepting that the top portion 2 of the back member is a little higher than that of the front member, so as to cover the back of the neck of the wearer. These members are formed with collar openings 3 and arm openings 4 and 5, so ,that the completed article may be drawn over the body of the wearer extending from the neck to below the waist. The adjacent side edges 6 and 7 on bothsides of the article are joined by expansion strips C and D extending from below the pit of the arm opening to the lower edge 8 of the body, said strips and the front and back elements being sewed or otherwise secured together. The adjacent shoulder edges 9 and 10 on both sides of the neck opening are similarly joined by expansion strips E and F. The material used in the body of the garment is eiderdown or other warm fabric. The connecting expansion strips C, D, E and F are preferably composed of knitted yarn or crocheted yarn or any suitable coarsely woven material that is elastic and will stretch, thus allowing the garment to be drawn on over the head, also allowing free movement of the body, but at the same time holding the front, back and side strips closely about the body of the wearer to give the most eflicient protection. The front and back being made out of eiderdown or other cloth material is less expensive and less laborious in construction than articles of wearing apparel made entirely by hand. They are also warmer than knit goods being impervious to wind, and when secured by the expansion strips in the manner described are fully as comfortable to wear. The lower encircling edge of the article described is provided with a closely knitted band G sewed or otherwise secured to the lower edges of the front, back and side strips, thus holding the article closely around the wearer below the waist.
When desired the article described may be provided with a collar 11 and sleeves 12 (see Fig. 3), made out of any usualor suitable material or the article may be designed in various ways within the scope of my invention, to meet the requirements of the user.
Having described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is I An article of wearing apparel having a body composed of eiderdown fabric front and back having arm, neck and body openings, the adjacent side and top edges of said parts being joined by longitudinal strips and the lower edge of said parts being secured to a closely fitting band adapted to'encircle the body below the waist, said strips and band being composed of freely elastic mate rial.
