UNITED STATEs PATENT EErcE.
DAVID S. COOK,AOF WRIGHTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,029, dated April 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. COOK, of Wrightsville, York county, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented an Improved Coal or Ore Car that I style the double-dump eight-wheel ore or coal car 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the aceompan yin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making. a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of the double-dump car body with the two gates closed. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section ot' the same car-body with the two gates open and exhibiting the inclines from the front, rear, and center of the car to the edges of the gates. Fig. 3 exhibits a top view'of the body of the car, showing the incline bottoms from the ends to the gate-ways, also the incline sides. Fig. 4 represents an end elevation of the eight-wheehcar, and showing by the dotted lines the shape of the incline sides. Fig. 5 represents a cross section, through the center of one of the gates, the centra-1 supporting-rod, and the shape of the incline sides.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a double-dump for eight-wheel cars, composed of two apartments with double gate-ways iu each, and double-incline sides, and a central angular apartment for carrying or containing tools, tc. The object o f my invention is to facilitate unloading an eightwheel/car, and, at the same time, the ore or coal is unloaded free of the axles or wheels, and by having the great weight transferred from the center of the car to where it Vshould be upon the front and rear trucks or wheels, I completely relieve the car in the center and prevent it from sagging in the middle, which elfectually obviates the difficulties of carrying and unloading ore 0r coal as heretofore.
The construction and operation of my doubleapartment car has decided advantages over single-apartment cars, as it is an eight-wheel car carrying its load on the wheels, having an angular central apartment, and all the sides inclines, and with the double gate-ways, saving time and labor in carrying and unloading. The eight-wheel cars with single apartments have but one set of gates and a flat space at each end of the ear, from whence the ore or coal must be thrown by the hand, the gates being in the center of the car; and the greatest weight is, consequently, carried there, it being the lowest part of the bed, which frequently causes the car-bed to break in two; but my invention or double-apartment car is stronger, more durable, and unloaded with less cost.
My car-bed may also be used as afarmwagon, with similar incline bottoms, sides, and
ates for carrvin` and unloadinor a les o- 7 o o J tatoes, corn, &c.
A represents the outside frame of the car with its stays B, braces C, and gates D D in the bottom, closed and locked by the central uprightkey-rod E. At Fig. 2 the gates D D are represented as parted in the center and open, hanging down by their hinges with the incline bottoms F and G extending from the gateways to the centerand each end ofthe car up to the top edge of the frame A.- The sides H H of the car, as shown at Fig.. 5, are angular shaped, inclining from the top to near the lon g.
beams J J of the bottom of the car where the sides are vertical and allow the ore or coal to drop from the incline suddenly down through the gate-ways freely, rapidly, and without choking. The triangular center of the car K, by the two incline bottoms G G, forms a triangular apartment or space, K, which is intended to be used for carrying tools, ropes, oil-cans, 85e.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe double-dump car, having three apartments with two gate-ways D D, vincline sides H H, and central angular apartment K, when constructed and operated as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
DAVID S. COOK.
