Description

M. P. MARONG.
NIGHT AUTOMATIC HGENSE. BOX. APPLICATION FILED 0Ec.1.-1 9n.
Patentei Mar. 19, 1918.
MICHAEL P. MABONG, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
NIGHT AUTOMATIC LICENSE-BOX.
Specification of Letters fat-exit.
Patented Mar; 19, 1918.
Application filed December 7, 1917. Serial No. 206,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL P. MARONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Night Automatic License- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for holding license plates for automobiles and the principal object of the invention is to provide a box for rcmovably holding any size of license plate and provided with means for illuminating the same. Y 7
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding said plate against movement within the box, thus preventing the plate from rattling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combi nation and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifi cally pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reforence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the invention with parts broken away to show the interior of the box.
Fig. 2 is a central cross sectional view.
Fig. 3 is an end view showing the means for supporting the tail light.
As shown in these views the holder is made in the form of a box 1 of substantially rectangular shape and provided with the top 2, the bottom 3 and the back 4. The front edges of the top and bottom are bent to provide the upper and lower grooves or guide- ways 5 and 6, the said bends being so madethat the grooves are located on the outer sides of the said top and bottom. The said top and bottom mid-way of their edges are provided with projections 7 and 8 which extend inwardly so as to form guides for the end pieces 9. These end pieces are each provided with the end slots 10, each slot having a projecting flange 11 on each side thereof for engaging the guides 7 and 8. Each end piece is also provided with an end flange 12 to which the license plate 13 is adapted to be secured. 14 indicates a handle secured to each end plate for facilitating its movement within the box. 14: indicates an electric light secured to the rear side of the box for illuminating the license plate. Said license plate is provided with perforations outlining the numerals and letters thereon so that the light passing through said perforations will clearly indicate said letters and numerals at night. Of course, the figures on the license plate are so arranged t-hat they may be clearly seen during the day.
The license plate is suitably secured to the flange 12 of the end plates 9, said plates being so located in the box as to position the license plate centrally therein. The license plate will engage with the grooves 5 and 6 and the grooves in the end plates will enwith the perforations 7 and 8, thus all movement of the license plate is prevented. If desired the license plate may be secured to the outer flanges of the grooves 5 and 6.
The holder may be located at any desired position on the automobile though I prefer to use a holder in the front and rear and to locate said holders on the fenders. I prefer to secure the holders to the fenders by means of the brackets 16 which consist of the vertical member 1.7 and the horizontal members 18. the lower horizontal member being extended beyond the vertical member for engagement with the fender.
If desired the tail light may be located on the holder in the rear of the machine and for this I provide a supporting bracket 19 having the side flanges 20 for engaging with the top of the box and carrying the lamp receptacle 12 in its upper part.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination andarrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a box having the upper: and lower grooves for receiving the license plate, and adjustable end plates in said box.
2. A device of the class described compris- Coplu 0! this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. 0.
ing a box having upper and lower grooves therein for receiving the license plate, upper and lower guiding projections in'said box and end plates having grooves therein engaging with said projections, and flanges for engaging. said license plate.
In testimony-whereof I aflix my signature. 7
