Appli-cation area october '3, 1917.
To ZZ whom t may concern.' j
Be it known that 1, DANIEL Kors, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an 1mprovemcnt in ripparel-Corscts, of which the following is a specification.
' rl`his invention rela-tes to an apparel cor'- set and more particularly to a front lace and closed back corset garment. Heretofore various forms of apparel corsets have been constructed in which front lace devices have been employed, and in some instances as for example in Letters Patent No. 1,233,251 granted to me July 10, 1917, together 'with these front lace devices there have been enrployed tension straps so placed in the lower front portion of the garment as to simultaneously effect an inward and an upward pressure against the abdomen of the wearer to properly support the saine, these tension straps being suitably adjustable to perform this function. 1n this type of garment there has also been employed devices for co-acting with the lacing devices to determine the 'eX- tent to which the lacing devices must be adj usted to make the garment symmetrical on the body of the wearer, and such devices are shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,211,100 granted to me September 25, 1917. ln the present case prefer to utilize the front lace device together with the devices for determining the extent to which these lacing devices must be adjusted to make the garment symmetrical, and in addition to these features 1 employ self-reducing straps to effect a circumferential pressure and the cerresponding liattening effect upon the abdomen of the wearer instead of the uplift tension devices as shown and described in the first aforesaid Letters Patent. 1n this construction the front lace devices are adapted to produce the same results as the uplift tension devices heretofore employed by adjusting the abdominal section vof the garment to the proper position for obtaining this eflect, and the garment made in accordance with my present invention will be hereinafter more particularly described.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the application of a still further form 'of the invention, and
Fig. G is an `enlarged elevation of a front portion of the garment shown in Fig.
Referring to the drawing and particu larly to Figs. 1 and 2, the corset made in accordance with this invention comprises a body portion 10 preferably closed at the back and provided at the front with front steel sections 11 'and 12, these 'as usual being fitted with suitable clasps 13 by which these front steel sections are connected when the garment is in use. These front steel sections are adapted to come at the front central portion of the body of the wearer and on the left hand side of the garment the front steel section 12 is permanently secured to the body of the garment while on the left hand side of the garment as illustrated, the front steel section 11 is provided along one edge with a series of eyelets lil. rThe adjacent edge of the body of the garment is fitted with a reinforcing edge section 15 in which there are eyelets 16 corresponding in number and position with the eyelets 11 in the front steel section 1l. A lace 17 is threaded through the eyelets 14E and 16 so as to adjust the garment to the proper position on the body of the wearer. The lace extends from the lower edge of the abdominal section of the garment upwardly to the top edge of the corset so that in the adjustment to position thereof thelower part of the lace adjusts the abdominal section of the corset to produce a simultaneousinward and upward pressure. 1n this divided part 'of the garment there is also a tongue 1S connected at one edge to the front steel section 11 and at the opposite edge to the reinforcing strip 15 in the adjacent edge of the body of the garment, and this tongue 18 may be fitted with suitable longitudinal and transverse stays to act as gages in determining the extent to which the lacing devices must be adjusted to make the parts of the garment symmetrical on the body of the wearer as shown and described in Letters lPatent to which reference has hereinbefore been made. In this instance however, the tongue 1S preferably extends from the upper to the lcwer edge of the garment, and as will be understood, the longitudinal and transverse bonings or stiffening devices are co-eXtensive with the lacing devices.
In this form of garment I employ a skirt section 19 which completes the continuity of the depending skirt to the edge of the reinforcing strip 15 by which, as hereinbefore described, this edge of the garment is connected by lacing Vdevices to one front steel section thereof. I also employ a self-reducing strap in cach side of the garment as indicated at 20. These self-reducing straps and parts associated therewith are similar in both sides of the garment, and consequently the structure as illustrated, in one side in iFig. 2 only will be described. At the end distant from the front steel section the self-reducing strap 20 is secured to the body of the garment along a line of stitching 21 appreciably forward of the hip section of the body member. From this line of stitching the self-reducing strap extends forwardly and at its opposite end is provided with series of eyelets 22, vany one of whichA is adapted to engage with the hook 23 provided therefor in the lower portion of the neath and act independently of this portion of the garment, and at its lower end this hose supporter strap is fitted with a hose supporter 26. The depending portion 27 of the front steel member 11 may also be fitted with a hose supporter indicated at 28. In this form ofA garment I also employ an insert indicated at 20. This extends from the lines of stitching 21 by which, at its upper end', the insert is secured in the body ofthe garment to a line 22', and is secured at one edge in the line ofstitching 21, by which as hereinbefore described, one end of the self-reducing strap 20 is attached, and also at its opposite edge to the reinforcing strip 15 on the front edge of the body of the garment. This insert 20 is therefore unattached to the upper portion of the skirt member' 19 from the points 23 and 24', thereby forming the slot or opening through which the depending hose supporter strap 24 is passed. In the use of ythis form of the invention as will be apparent, the lacing devices are employed to adjust the garment to position on the wearer, and the self-reducing strap to produce the de sired circumferential pressure to effect the desired flattening of the abdomen while the -depending hose supporter when connected steel end of this strap the same is fitted with eyelets 30, anyone of which may be caused to engage with Va hook 31 fixed in the lower portion of the front steel for this purpose. At its opposite end this self-reducing strap is iittcd with a reinforcing strip 32 in which there is a series of eyelets 33. Associated with the self-reducing strap is an anchor strap 341-, one end of which is iiXed in the body of the garment appreciably forward of the hip section by means of a line of stitching or otherwise, indicated at 35. In the anchor strap 34C there is a series of eyelets 36 corresponding in number and position to the eyelets 33 in the reinforcing strip 32. A lace 37 is threaded through the eyelets 33 and 36 and also through a slot 38 in the skirt of the garment and through eyelets 39 so that the lace may be drawn up to adjust the self-reducing strap to the desired position when the garment is in use. The depending hose supporter strap 40k in this form of the invention is made integral with the lower edge of the self-reducing strap 29. This strap similar to the corresponding strap 24rin the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, passes beneath the skirt member 19V at the upper edge thereof so as to lie on the underside of the garment when in use, the opening at the upper edge of the skirt section being indicated at l1. At its lower endk the depending hose supporter strap 10 is fitted with a hose supporter for being connected to the hose of the wearer. ing strap in this instance is possible as will be apparent at both .ends thereof, that is to say, it may be adjusted at the front steel end by means of keyelets 30 and the hook 31,
and also at the opposite end by meansof The adjustment of the self-reduckes of the invention. In ,this construction the self-reducingy strap is indicated at 48 land in the forward end thereof is provided with eyelets 44, any one of which is adapted to engage with a hook 45 provided for this purpose -in the lower end ,of the corresponding front steel. Atits opposite Iend the selfreducing strap 43 is fitted with a reinforcing strip 4G in which there is a series of eyelets 47. Associated with this end of the selfreducing strap is an anchor strap 4S fixed in the body of the garment forward of the hip section thereof by lines of stitching 49 or otherwise. In the anchor strap 48 there is a series of eyelets 50 corresponding in number and position with the eyelets 47 in the reinforcing strip 46. A lace 51 is threaded through the eyelets 47 and 50 and also through eyelets so that the lace may be drawn up exteriorly of the garment to adjust the parts of the self-reducing strap to position. In this form of invention I employ an insert 53 similar to the insert 20, and in this instance extending from the lines of stitching 54 by which it is secured in the body of the garment to a line indicated at 55, and the lower end of the insert lies beneath the lower front portion of the skirt 56 of the garment. In this form of the invention however, the depending hose supporter strap 57 instead of being directly connected to the self-reducing strap is secured at its upper end in the lines of stitching 54 in the body of the garment and also along one edge fora predetermined distance on the same lines of stitching 49 by which the anchor strap is secured to the body of the garment so that a portion of this depending hosesupporter strap overlies the lacing devices employed to adjust the self-reducing strap at the distant edge thereof to position when in use. The depending hose supporter strap in this instance similar to those in the other forms of the invention passes beneath the skirt section 5G and a portion thereof lies between this skirt section and the underlying part of the insert which is similar in this instance to the inserts described in the other forms of the invention, and at its lower end the depending hose supporter strap is provided with hose supporters 58.
In this form of the garment however, t-he tongue member 1S extends only an appreciable distance below the lower' end of the front lacing devices as indicated at 59 and the front portion of the skirt is separate from the overlying front port-ion depending from the front steelsection 1l7 so that one end of the hose supporter strap G0 is connected to the lower end of the depending front steel section and the opposite end of the hose supporter 60 to the overlying edge of the skirt section 56. Also in this form of the garment the upper edge of thisk skirt section is lit-ted with an adjusting strap 61 in which `there is a series .of :eyelets E62. The corresponding skirt, section on the yother or left hand `side Aof the garment `as indicated at `(i3, is not divided but immediately below the lower .end of the corresponding front steel is fitted with a hook .63 byjmeans of which the upper end of the divided portion of the front ski-rt 5.6 may be suitably adjusted and held in position. In this form of the invention the self-reducing strap is lalso doubly adjustable and the overlying and depending hose supporter strap coacts therewith to effect the desired flattening of the abdomen in .the same manner as these parts produce this effect in the forms of the nvention hereinbefore described.
Referring to Figs. 5 and v6 the lacing devices, the tongue and parts associated therewith for adjusting the garment to position are similar in all respects to those hereinbefore described. In this form of the invention however, the forward or front steel edge of the self-reducing strap 64 is permanently connected to the front steel section 11 along a line of stitching indicated at 65 or otherwise. At its inner end this self-reducing strap is fitted with a reinforcing strip 6G in which there is a series of eyelets 67. Associated with this end of the self-reducingstrap is an anchor strap 68, secured to the body of the garment forward of the hip section by a line of stitching 69 or otherwise. In the anchor strap 68 there is a series of eyelets 7 O corresponding in number and position with the eyelets 67 at the distant end of the self-reducing strap. A lace 7l is threaded through the eyelets 67 and 70 and also through eyelets 7 2 so as to be drawn up exteriorly of the garment to adjust the parts of the self-reducing strap to position. In this form of the invention there is employed an insert 73 extending from the lines of stitching` 74 by which it is secured to the body of the garment` to a line 74. Similar to the corresponding parts of the other forms of the invention this insert is also connected at one edge to the reinforcing strip at the edge of the body of the corset and for aportion of its length is also connected to the body of the garment in the lines of stitching 69 which also secure the anchor strap 68 in position therein. Similar also to the other forms of the invention the insert for a portion of its length is unconnected along these lines of stitching so as to leave a space through which the laces may be passed to be adapted to be threaded through the eyelets 7 2. The depending hose supporter stra-p 7 5 in this instance is similar to that shown and described in the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. '4 and extends from the lines of stitching 74 by which it is secured at its upper edge in the body of the garment to a point beneath the front skirt section passing beneath the sa me at the upper edge thereof as'indicated at 7 6. In its lower end this depending hose supporter strap is fitted with a hose supporter 7 7 so that the same co-acts with the self-reducing strap in the same manner and to produce the same effects as those described in the other forms of the invention.
While I have hereinbefore described cory set garments in which the lacing devices apply only on one side of the front steels of the garment, it will be understood that similar lacing'devices may be employed if desired on both sides of the garment withoutl departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
In my co-pending application Serial No. 193,892 I have shown and described a corset garment in which the lacing devices and the functions performed by the same are similar in all respects to like parts described in the present case. In the former application however, there is shown and described a form of self-reducing strap which also acts as a hose supporter strap, and which is permanently associated with a skirt section of the garment, whereas in the present case the hose supporter strap shown and described in connection with that portion of the garment to which this invention relates is associated and co-acts with the self-reducing strap, but is entirely independent of the skirt section of the garment. Furthermore, in this application I have shown and described a selfreducing strap in certain instances, which is :adjustable at a plurality of its sections, that is in more than one place, between the extremities thereof, and in this feature also, the corset shown and described in this application varies from that disclosed in the copending application aforesaid. i
I claim as my invention:
1. An apparel corset comprising ay body member, front steels, lacing devices for connecting one front steel to the adjacent portion of the body member, a self-reducing strap adjustable at aV plurality of its sections to position in the garment, and a depending hose supporter strap coacting with the self-reducing strap to exert a circumferential pressure on the underlying part of the body of the wearer.
