To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, RnGrNaLD Hanna Bonsnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broomes Island, in the county of Calvert and State of' Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Presses; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in baling presses and more particularly tobacco presses and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved form of a tobacco press in which a windlass and pulleys are used for increasing power in compressing and to secure a more ellicient packing of the tobacco with a considerable saving of time and labor employed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of frame and i'ollower employed in the frame in which all parts of the mechanism are readily accessible and the bales or hogsheads employed may be more readily mounted and withdrawn from'the frame than is capable of accomplishment, with the majority of these presses used at the present time. An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved form of operating mechanism and connection for carrying out the compression of the tobacco and which construction is designed to produce the best results with the minimum off wear upon the parts.
With these different objects in view and with others which will appear from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be more fully described and claimed taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification. In preparing tobacco for the market at the present time, it is customary to compress the leaf tobacco in suitable hogsheads or bales by pressing down on a plunger. With this type of compressor it has been found ditilcult to obtain the required compression for shipping the largest amount of tobacco in the most compact package. 1t is with this object in view that 1 have designed the press to be hereinafter described with which it is possible to compress the tobacco contained in two hogsheads into the space of one hogshead at considerable saving of time and labor.
In the accompanying drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. My improved press comprises a frame F consisting oi' a longitudinally disposed bottom beam 1 mounted on transversely extending end supporting beams 2 and a centrally disposed transverse beam 3. The top beam -l is disposed in longitudinal and vertical alinement with the bottom beam 1 and spaced thereabove by an end member or beam 5 and the axle 6 of a windlass 7, mounted in the opposite end or". the frame. Arranged intermediate the ends of the frame and secured at opposite sides of the side edges of the beams 1 and 4l is an alined pair of side beams 8 disposed substantially intermediate the ends of the frame and adjacent the central supporting beam 3 in the windlass carrying end of frame.
Secured to the supporting beam 3 and the end beam 2 at the opposite end of the frame is a pair of track bars 9 extending longitudinally and in parallel spaced relations on the opposite sides of bottom beam 1 and in a horizontal plane therewith. The inner face of these track bars 9 adjacent the bottom beam 1 are faced with angle metal as designated at 10 to provide a suitable track to Carry a wheeled carrier 11 adapted to support bales or hogsheads thereon.
Extending longitudinally in the frame is a pair of parallel vertically spaced arms 12 secured each at one end in any suitable manner rigidly between the side beams 8. These beams are spaced above the bottom of frame and extend t0 a point substantially midway of the adjacent end of frame as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 mounted in a suitable manner on the inner end of arms 12 is a presser head 13, which in the present form is made circular to use upon hogsheads but which may be made to any conigurationwdesired depending uponV the' individual conditionslexisting# at the timev of-V the'press'er head 13 islocated is a vertically positioned substantially rectangular follower plate 1st recessed at its upper and lower ends to receive the topv and bottom beams 1 and i for slidable engagement there'over. At the lower end of the plate, rollers 15 are suitably mounted to prevent friction between trie follower and bottom beam 1 when thcfollower is moved thereon. The projections at the lower end of the follower as designated at 13 are designed to be received in the spaces" between the track bars 9 and the bot-tem beam 1- as clearly illustrated in Fig. d. r1`his construction will serve to provide an eiiicient guide for the follower', and the rollers 15 will prevent any friction. On its inner face adjacent the presserhead 13 thefollower plate is provided with a similarlyformed plunger 17 which may be'suitably secured thereon in any desired manner or formed integral therewith. Transversely arranged on the opposite side of the follower intermediate the ends thereof is a bar 13 secured thereto and having its ends projectingf beyond the side edges of the follower as illustrated'in Figs. 41-6, and bifurcated at its ends to receive longitudinally extending bars 19, which in'turn are received in the bifurcated ends of aA similarly formed bar 20 disposed between the arms 12 andl in back of the presser head 13 for longitudinal movement between the arms. The bars 19are detachably positioned inthe ends of bars 13 and 20 by means of removable pins 21. This construction of the follower and bars provides a bale retaining frame and owingfto the removable connection of the bars 19, comprising the sides ofthe frame, hogsheads or bales may readily be placed on thc carrier 11 or withdrawn therefrom. The carrier 11 is disposed between the follower 1L1 and'presser head 13 and comprises longitudinally extendingy side members 22 having wheels 23 on the outer faces thereof and connectedl to transversely extending hogshead carrying braces=24e The end of the carrier adjacentg the-follower is provided with eyes 25adapted to be engaged by hook` members 26 pivotally mounted ,on the follower asclearly illustrated in'Figs. 3 and 7 so thatwhen connected the carrier andfollower w'ill move inunison. Suitable' straps or other retaining members 27 `may be disposed on the carrier as desired but preferably they are arranged a'nd the car- Y rier isde'signecLvto receiveV a pa-ir'of hogs- 'hcadsg28 vand 29 thereon which are disposed Vwith thelr meetingendsopenandr withthe end plate 30 adjacent the presser head 13.
These hogsheads are first packed by hand andltlien'f-'a'ppliedto the carrier as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 so that when compressed thel` leaf tobacco generally indicated as at 31 will be compressed into the space occupied byonediogshead as indicated in Fig; 3.
A Disposed between the arms 12 on a pivot bolt 32 extending 'between the side beams 8 is a multiple sheaved pulley 33 and mount# ed inan eye bolt 34 secured on the bar 2O at its center is a second multiple sheaved pulley 35. Disposed in a well knownY mannerover' these'pulleys is a cable 33 connected at the windlass carrying` end of the frame to a stud 37; on the' windla-ss. The bar 20 will move between the bars 12 and when the windlass is actuated Vthrough the handle 38 the follower Vwill be drawn upv against the presser head-13 compressingk the tobacco into the hogshead adjacent the lfollower untilv the limit of compression `has been reached. A suitable ratchet mechanism in-k dicated at 39 is provided to retain the compression and preventretrograde movement of the'lfollower. If desired a suitable brace (notshown) may be employed between the end of the frame andthe follower to prevent retrograde movement; VVlhen comin the follower and end beam and securedV in an eye 43 on rear face of' follower, so that when-,the ratchet 39'is disengaged and the windlass reversed the cable l0 will draw theY follower OandV carrier in-- the opposite direction and return' the parts to normalv position.

6. ln a baling press, a frame, comprising horizontally disposed top and bottom beams, an end beam, a windlass mounted in the opposite end of said frame, side beams intermediate the ends thereof, a presser head mounted between said side beams, a track in said frame, a wheeled bale carrier thereon, a substantially rectangular follower recessed at its ends to slidably engage said top and bottom beams, connection between said follower and carrier pulleys mounted on said presser head and connecting cable between said windlass and follower over said pulleys.
7. ln a baling press, a frame, top and bottom beams therefor in longitudinally Vertical alinement, oppositely arranged side beams secured to said top and bottom beams intermediate the ends thereof, a windlass at one end, a pair of track members, spaced horizontally from the opposite sides of said bottom beam and in a horizontal plane therewith and extending between said side beams, a substantially rectangular follower recessed at its ends to receive said top and bottom beams and slide thereover, rollers carried by said follower, a wheeled bale supporting carrier on said track and connected to said follower, and connection between said windlass and follower at both sides thereof for reciprocation of said follower.
