To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. AURAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Parkg'inthe county of `.Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements Vin Commutator-Slotting De- 4 v ices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved machine for slotting commutators by cutting out the mica or other insulating material between the bars of a commutator, the object of the invention bein t0 provide an improved machine of this ind which is simple in construction, is light and portable and adapted for manual manipulation and which may be used on commutators without the necessity of removing the motor end shields and brush holders.
Another object is to provide an improved machine of this character which is adapted for cutting the slots 0n commutators that have been worn to an uneven surface as well as on commutators that are true or faced.
Another object is to' provide an improved machine of this kind which can be caused to follow the curvature of a -worn `commutat'or and cut the insulation to an even depth regardless of the worn condition of the commutator surface and at the same time keep the cutting saw true with the center of the commutator.
Another object is to provide an improved machine of this kind which is adjustable and adapted to be used on commutators of different diameters. n
Another object is to provide an improved commutator slotting device which may be used on the commutators of motors or generators whether the same are rough and ridged or smooth and true, and without the neces sit of removing the end shields or brush ho ders of the motor or generator and also witho` t the necessity of employing special frames clamped to the commutator or frame keeping the cutting tool in alinement.
A further object is to provide an improved commutator slotting machine which may be used without danger of injuring the commutator bars.
W'ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement .of y devices ,hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a commutator slotting machine constructed and arranged in accordance withmy invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same showing the reverse side from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. V3 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 4 is a front,` elevation of the same, showing the same ab arranged for use on a commutator.
Fig. 5 is an elevation partly in section, showing a modified construction of my improved commutator slotting machine.

In accordance with my invention I provide a head 1 which has flat vertical opposite sides 2, 3 and which is provided at the front end with apair of spaced forwardly extend- 'ing bearings 4 andyis provided at the rear side with a tubulla'girA portion 5 which is internally threadedjds at 6. A longitudinal shaft 7 is mounted in a bearin which is c011- centric with the tubular portion 5 and said shaft is provided at its front end with a worm 8.
A=transversely arranged shaft 9 is mounted in the bearings 4 and is provided at the center witha worm gear 10 which is arranged between the bearings 4 and is engaged by the worm 8. At theright-hand end of the shaft, corresponding with the side 3 of the head is a. revoluble cutter element 11 which is here shown as a circular saw and support the machine on the commutator and permit the machine to be moved on the commutator in line with the bars to permit the operation of the saw and adapt the saw to cut the mica orother insulatin material between the commutator bars. he shoe also gages the depth of the cuts made by the saw, as will be understood. x
A vertically arranged bracket 13 is secured by screws 14 in a vertical groove 15 in the side 3 of the head. The lowerV end of said bracket projects `downwardly below' the head and a guide element 15 which is made of thin metal is pivotally connected at lts front end to the lower portion of said bracket as by means of a screw 16. The said guide elem'ent is arranged directl in line with the saw and the lower edge o the 'guide element operates behind'and in the slot formed or cut by the saw, the guide element serving to steady the slotting machine on the Work and also enabling the slotting machine to be moved manually in line with the commutator bars as required to direct the saw and cause the saw to cut the mica or other 1nsulating material between the commutator bars. A spring 17 is secured to the rear side of the bracket 13 and bears downwardly on the upper edge of the guide element as shown. A
The side 2 of the head also has a vertical roove 18 in which a bracket 19 is mounted or vertical adjustment. Said bracket has a vertical slot 20 for the reception of the screws 21 which secure said bracket to the head, the slot enablin the bracket to be vertically adjusted and t 1e screws enabling the bracket to be secured to any desired vertical adjustment, as will be understood. Said bracket has a forwardly extending arm 22 at its lower end and on which a su portin roller 23 is mounted. The stub sha or ax e of the roller is' indicated at 24. The roller is made of liber and serves to rest upon the commutator and to sup ort part of the weight of the cutting hea and also serves to facilitate the manipulation of the machine by the user.
Within the scope of my invention any suitable means may be emp o ed for driving the worm shaft 8 and there y driving the slot cutting saw. In the form of the invention shown in Fi s. 1 to 4 the said shaft 7 is driven by an e ectric motor 25 the shaft 26 of which 1s connected by a cou ling 27 to the inner end of the worm sha t 7. Thet casing of the motor is bolted at one sido to a hollow handleY section 28 `the front end of which is provided with an exteriorly threaded tubular projection 29 which is screwed in the tubular portion 5 of the head 1 as shown. The outer' or rear end of the motor casin is bolted to a hollow handle' section 30. he conductingcables 31 pass through the handle section 30 as shown. It will be understood that the handle of this form of my invention may be readily grasped by the workman and that the slotting machine may be readily controlled and manipulated by the wo'kman in such manner'as to cause the same to cut the commutator slots. l
In Fig. 5 of the drawing I show a hollow handle 32 which is attached as at 33 to the tubular portion of the head in lieu of the handle hercinbefore described. A shaft 34 extends longitudinally through the center of the hollow handle 32 and is mounted in bearnationals a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims. I would also have it understood that while the invention is especially adapted for use in cutting out the slots of commutatore it may nlo be used for other analogous purposes and for cutting fiber blocks, sheet mica, a lumber, and the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a commutator clotting machine, a head, a cutting element revolubly mounted on one side of the head, a guide arranged behind and in line with the cutting element to operate in the slot cut thereby, a shoe on the under side of the head and near thecutting element to bear on the work, a bracket on the side of the head opposite that on which the. cutting element 1s located and provided With a roller to bear on the work, a handle projectin from the head and arranged parallel wit the plane of the cutting element and means to operate the cutting element and icludinga shaft arranged in the handle.

In a commutator slotting machine, a head, a cutting element revolubly mounted on the head, means to actuatc the cutting element, a guiding element pivotally connected to the head and arranged`behind and iny line with the cutting element to operate in the slot made by the cutting element, a spring bearingk downwardly on said guide and supporting' means for the h'ad and ar' ranged to bear on the work and to permit slidllpg movement of the machine on the wor 3. 4. In a commutator slotting machine a head, a cutting element revolubly -mounted on the head, a guide arranged behind and in line with the cutting element to operate in the slot cut thereby, supporting means for the head and -arranged to bear on the work to permit sliding movement of' the machine on the work, said supporting means comprising a shoe arranged near the cutting element and a bracket secured to the head and spaced from the cutting element and a roller carried by said bracket and to bear on the work, the said bracket being vertically adjustable on the head. r
