Located in said standard '13 is a rod 15 which is adjustably secured in the standard by set screws 16, The upper end of the rod 15 is formed with a disk-shaped head 17 which is serrated. on the side face thereof, as at 18. The bracket 12 is bolted to a depending lug 19 which is also formed with a diskshaped'hcad 20 having serrations 21 adapted to engage the serrations 18 in the head 17. A bolt 22 passing through the lug secures the same to the headi17 on the rod carried by the standard. By loosening the bolt 22, the two disk-shaped heads may be swung relative to each other, and will be held in variousadjusted positions by the inter-engaging serrations. The bracket 12 is also rovided with a plurality of'spaced rods which are alternately staggered relative to each other. The tape passing from the tape reel 7 is led between the rods 23, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, and these rods serve to place a uniform tension on the tape throughout its entire Width.
As the tape passes from the reel to the guiding tension rods 23, it will leave the reel substantially on the line 24. \Vhen the bracket arm 12 is adjusted as shown in Fig.
2, it will be apparent that the point25, where the tape leaves the reel 7 at one edge thereof, is a greater distance from the tape guide 6, than the point 26 where the other edge of the tape leaves the reel. Therefore, the lower edge of the tape will be placed under slightly greater tension than the upper edge of the tape. On the other hand, when the bracket 12 is adjusted, as shown in Fig. 3,
the point 26 will be farther from the tape guide than the point 25, and therefore, the upper edge of the tape will be placed under slightly greater tension than the lower edge of the tape.
From the above description, it will be apparent that by adjusting the bracket 12, the tension on the edges of the tape may be varied to suit the conditions of the tape or the stitchingso that the edge of the tape placed on the right side of the goods, may be caused to lie close thereto, without any undesirable looseness, or, if the edge of the tape on the right side of the goods being stitched is found to be too tight for any reason, this may be relieved by a proper adjustment of the bracket supporting the reel.
The term tape is herein used in its broadest sense, and is intended to cover a strip of fabric, whether elastic or non-elastic, or whether said strip is formed with selvage edges or with cut edges, and the invention above described is particularly useful for delivering a tape to a guide which is used for folding one edge of the strip to a greater extent than the other, whereby a combined binding and facing strip is produced. By adjusting the bracket holding the tape reel above or below a horizontal plane, the tension on the edge of the binding strip or tape may be varied, so that the combined binding and facing strip will be laid smoothly on the fabric being stitched.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.- The combination of a tape guide, a tape reel for delivering tape to said guide, tension devices between the reel and guide, and means for varying the position of the axis of the reel relative to the guide, whereby a tension may be placed on one edge or the other of the tape.
2. The combination of a tape guide, a reel for delivering a tape with its side faces substantially vertical to said guide, a bracket arm supporting said reel, and means for adjusting said bracket arm, whereby the inclination of the axis of the taper-eel relative to the plane of the tape guide may be varied for placing a tension on one edge or the other of the tape.
3. A tape guiding device comprising a standard, a bracket carried by said standard, a tape reel mounted on said bracket, means whereby said bracket may be angularly adjusted relative to said standard, and a plurality of spaced tension rods carried by said bracket.
4. A tape guiding device comprising a standard, a rod adjustable in said standard, a bracket, means for adjustably connecting said bracket to said rod, a tape reel carried by said bracket, and a plurality of spaced tension rods mounted on said bracket.
5. A tape guidlng device comprising a standard, a rod vertically ad ustable in sa1d standard and having a disk-shaped head, a
bracket pivoted to said rod and having a disk-shaped head adapted to engage the head on the rod, the contacting faces of said heads being serrated whereby the bracket may be held in adjusted positions, a reel pivotally supported by said bracket, the axis of the reel being at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bracket.
6. A tape guiding device comprising a standard, a rod vertically adjustable in said standard and having a disk-shaped head, a bracket pivoted to said rod, and having a disk-shaped head adapted to engage the head on the rod, the contacting faces of said heads being serrated whereby the bracket may be held in adjusted positions, a reel pivotally supported by said bracket, the axis of the reel being at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bracket, and a plurality of spaced tension rods carried by said bracket and projecting at'right angles therefrom.
