UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. HUBERT M. GREIST, OF HAVEN, CDNNECTICIIASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANU- FACTURING 00., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed September 6, 1917. Serial No. 189,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT M. GREIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Presses; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with-the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in I Figure 1 view of a press provided with a safety device constructed in accordance with my invention. V
Fig. 2 is the broken top or plan view of the safety device.
This invention relates to an improvement in safety devices for presses, and particularly to presses which are equipped with a. safety device operated by the simultaneous movement of two levers, such, for instance, as is shown in United States Patent 104637 granted December 3, 1912.
In the use of presses equipped with a safety device which necessitates the simultaneous operation of two levers, it is necessary that the operator shall first place the article to be operated upon in the press, then move both levers, then pick up a second piece to be operated upon, place it in the press and then move the hand to the operating lever. The object of this invention is to provide a work-holding tray, and place the same in connection with one of the operating levers so that in the act of picking up a piece of work to be placed in the machine the operator depresses one of the levers. And the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly as recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I have illustrated a drop press of usual construction, and by the term drop press as herein used I wish to be understood as including any stamping press, die press, or the like, having a movable part. 3 represents the frame of the press; 4, the bed; and 5, the hammer or punch. At the sides of the press are levers, 6 and 7, both of which mustbe simultaneously moved in order to allow the hammer to drop. The mechanism which these levers operate is not shown, as it forms no part of this invention. In connection with the machine thus described I employ a work tray, 8, provided at its forward edge with a lip, 9, which rests upon the lever, 7. Preferably, and as hereinshown, the tray and lip are provided with downwardly projecting lugs, 10 and 11, which limit the downward movement of the lip, and as herein shown the tray is provided at its outer end with a block 12, which holds it in an inclined position. In operation a piece of work having been placed between the bed and hammer, the operator places one hand on the lever, 6, and with the other hand picks up a. piece of work from the. tray andpresses upon the lip, 9, so as to depress the lever, 7, thus allowing the hammer to drop, which it can not do until both levers are simultaneously depressed. After the hammer rises the operator places the piece of work in his hand beneath the hammer and in picking up the next piece depresses the lip, 9, thus saving two or three unnecessary movements.
While I have shown the work tray at the left of the machine, it is apparent that it might be arranged at the right if so desired.
I claim:
' 1. The combination with a press and two operating levers therefor of. a work tray resting on one of the levers and movable when pressure is applied.
2'. The combination with a press of two levers for releasing the operating mechanism and a work tray provided with a lip bearing upon one of said levers and movable when pressure is applied.
3. The combination with a drop press of two levers for releasing the operating mechanism, a work tray, a lip hinged to said tray and bearing upon one of said levers and stop lugs depending from the adjacent edges HUBERT M. GREIST.
