Be it known that I, NAPOLEON B. DOUG- LAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the lcounty of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wall-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wall beds; and has for its object to attach a hinged door or closure to the under-surfaces of folding beds for movement therewith about a horizontal axis and to render the same disconnectible from the bed, whereby to permit access between the closure and the bed-frame for the purpose of cleaning. Other objects and advantages will become apparent upon further understandin of the invention.

In carrying out this object, I employ a springcounterbalanced bedframe adapted to be moved about a horizontal axis for folding and unfolding movement and a door or closure hinged at its lower end and comprising jointed sections carried on the undersurface of the bed and being detachably connected, one to the` fulcrum supports at the inner end of the bed and the other to the outer end of the bed-frame, said last named connection being detachable to permit the member to be dropped down for cleaning, and a slot or opening in the outer end of the closure to permit foldable legs on the outer end of the bed to move therethrough, said opening being closed by a hinged panel when the bed is in folded position.

One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichf Figure 1 shows a side elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying my invention.

Fig. 3 shows a similar view of the parts in l or guides 14 are provided on the brackets, with which engage rollers 15, on the end of the bed-frame, whereby the frame is guided in its folding movement. Preferably the backs of the rails 14 are left open and the frame fulcrums in depressions formed -on the links 11, so that the frame may b e readily `removed from its pivotal mounting.

A series of contractile coil springs 16 connect between the head of the bed and the floor or base and serve to counterbalance the bed. Other forms of counterbalancing means may be employed in place of the contractile coil springs shown. The frame has a jointed head piece 17 foldable to form a pillow boX and outer legs 18 foldable transversely on the frame.

The closure or door is hinged at 19 to the floor or base and has a jointed connection 20 positioned near the fulcrum point of the bed-frame. Short links 2l connect the lower or inner member 22 of the closure to the fulcrum links 11. The outer or upper member 23 of the closure extends along the under or rear surface of the bed-frame parallel therewith and has at its end a slot or aperture 24, through which the foldable legs 18 move. A hinged panel 25 closes the opening 24 when the legs are folded, and when the legs are extended said panel depends in front thereof. The opening 24 should be of suicient width to permit the necessary relative movement between the legs and closure when swinging the bed from one position to another. sure and embracing the side rails of the bed in a manner to permit sliding movement thereof.` The loosening of a single' bolt 28 allows the strap to be swung away from the rail, whereupon the member 23 maybe dropped down to the door to give access between the bed and closure for the purpose of cleaning. This is an important feature in a. structure of this kind, inasmuch as such a closure acts as a sort of trap for dirt and dust and without the facil-ity of detachment vthe work of cleaning is diicult and almost impossible.

Such a construction as the present is cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble and provides the same results as the more expensive closures andmountings. The attachment of the closure to the bed is simple and quick. The member 22 remains substantially parallel with the standards 12 at al1 times and serves to obscure the counterbalancing springs 16. The normal operation of the bed is in no wise interfered with.

Various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts herein shown and described may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 'i l. In a'wall bed, a bed frame, means to mount said frame for vertical movement, a hinged closure disposed beneath the frame, and means borne by the closure having a part on which one side of a side rail of the bed frame rests and a second part engaging the opposite side of said side rail and slidably embracing the latter for effecting simultaneous movement of the closure and frame.

2. In a wall bed, a bed frame, a vertical bracket, links pivoted to the bracket aol` jacent the top thereof and connected to the head end of the frame for mounting the latter for vertical oscillatory movement, a closure formed of hinged sections, means to hinge the outer end of one section adjacent the bracket base and in spaced relation to the bracket and said links, means connecting the upper end of said section to said links, means slidably connecting the outer end of the other closure section to the frame, said links upon up movement of the frame having movement toward the bracket to thereby cause said connecting means of said section to move the latter toward the bracket.

3. A wall-bed comprising, in combination, a bed-frame adapted to be moved about a horizontal axis for folding and unfolding, movable fulcrum supports for said frame, a closure carried on the under-surface of the bed and comprising jointed members, connections between said fulcrum supports and the inner member of the closure, detachable connections between said frame and the outer member of the closure, said detachable connections including a swingable clas on the outer member of the closure slida 1y engaged with the bed frame.

In a wall bed, a bed frame, a bracket having an upwardly extending guide, links pivoted to the bracket and to the bed frame, a closure formed of hinged sections, means to connect one section of the closure adjacent the floor, links connected to said section and to the first named links, means connecting the other section of the closure to the bed frame, and means borne by the bed frame and engaging said guide whereby to cause all of the links to move toward the bracket and therewith said first named section when the bed frame is raised.

5. In a wall bed, a bed frame having legs at its foot end, means to mount the frame for vertical movement, a closure for the frame arranged below the bottom side thereof, said closure having an opening to receive said legs of the frame therethrough when the frame is horizontal, and an auxiliary closure for automatically concealing said opening upon the main closure reaching vertical position.

6.. In a Wall bed, a bed frame, means to mount the frame for vertical movement, a closure for the frame arranged below the bottom side thereof, slidable means connecting the closure and frame so as to move in opposite directions according to the opening and closing movement of the frame and closure and means to enable restricted movement. of the slidable means relative to the frame and closure to permit the closure to be moved away from the frame.

7. In a wall bed, a bed frame, a bracket, links pivoted at their lower ends to the bracket adjacent the upper end of the bracket and at their upper ends to the frame, a sectional closure one section of which is hinged at one end adjacent the lower end of the bracket, link connections between the upper end of said section and the first named links, and means connecting the other section of the closure to the bed frame.

8. In a wall bed, 'a bed frame mounted for vertical folding and unfolding movement, a sectional closure for the frame hinged at one end adjacent the floor, means swingable into and out of engagement with the frame to connect same to the closure, and means whereby to lock said swingable means against swingin movement.
