Specification ot Letters Patent.

To all whom z't may concern.' y
Be it known that I, EDWARD I). SEnDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and Vuseful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates Ato furnaces and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
More particularly the invention relates to the furnace of a boiler.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings as follows Figure 1 shows a vertical central section through the boiler.
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a front elevation of a portion of the boiler including the fire door opening.
Fig. 4 a perspective view of the fire door plate.
l marks the shell of the boiler. This is continued at 2 forming the shell or casing for the furnace. The boiler has the crown sheet 1a and flues 1b leading from the furnace. An angle iron 3 is arranged around the bottom of the furnace and the insulating lining 4, preferably of fire brick is arranged on this angle iron. As shown the liningis formed of bricks or slabs of insulating material extending from the angle iron to the top, the upper ends having notches 5 to clear the flange of the crown sheet.
The difficulty with boilers of this type has been in repairing the interior of the furnace. The ordinary fire door is not large enough to admit the entrance of a man through it and consequently the repairing of the fire brick or fire lining was done at great disadvantage. The original assembling of the lire lining was also done at a great disadvantage.
In the present construction an opening 7 is arranged in onevside of the furnace of ample size to readily admit such portions of the body as are necessary t0 conveniently' operate on the lining. This opening is closed by a door plate 8 which has its outer surface shaped to conform to the shell of the furnace and is secured to the shell by bolts 9. This plate has the lire door open- Iatented Mar. 19, 1918.
ing 10 and this is surrounded by a flange 11 preferably extending inside the plate and sulliciently outside the plate to make a seat for the door 12. The fire door plate has the hinge lugs 13 to which the door is hinged and the catch lug 14 as is common.
In order to line the door plate it is provided with the flanges 15 at the bottom and flanges 16 extend vertically each side of the door opening flange 11. Bricks 17 are ar ranged on the supporting flanges 15 between the flanges 16 and bricks 18 are arranged kabove the opening flange 11 between the flanges 16. These can be put in place before the plate is kput into the opening. After the plate is in place the brick 2O are laid on top of the bricks 18 thus completing the lining.
In assembling the parts the opening 7 is ampleto permit of convenient introduction and placing of the fire lining of whatever material it may be made. After the fire lining isin place the bricks 17 and 18 are put in place on the fire door plate and it is inserted and secured in place yand the bricks 20 laid in thus completing the lining.y In
ycase of repairs the fire door plate is removed,
flanges supported by the horizontal flanges" and a lining above the door opening flange supported by the door opening flange ;V and a door for said opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD r. sELDEN.
