v My invention relates to improvements in dyeing machines and refers particularly to dyeing machines adapted to the dyeing of piece goods. I
In the dyeing of goods in the piece, the greatest care must be exercised in order to cause complete penetration of the dyestulf and produce even shades.
The dyeings of many dyestuffs requirean after-treatment with such products as me.- tallic-salts, or oxidizing agents in order to develop the best results. It is also necessary to thoroughly wash the goods at various 7 stages of the operation and to dry them when finished. 7
As each one of these operations has an effect upon the results, it is essential that all of the treatments be uniform throughout the fiber and that they be readily controlled.
,One object of my inventionis a device in which the piece goods may be uniformly subjected to a solution of a dye.
Another object of my invention is a devicein which thorough penetration of textile fabrics may be effected.
Another object of my invention is a device in which dyed fabrics may be. uniformly and thoroughly after-treated with a. liquid, air or other gas.
Another object of my invention is a device in which the fabrics may be thoroughly dried.
Another object of my invention is a device in which fabrics may be dyed, washed, aftertreated and dried in a thorough and uniform manner without handling them.

The pipes 29, 29 are connected to the pumps 37, 37. The pumps 37, 37 are connected to the two-way pipes 39, 39 having the valves 40, 40 41. 41 and also to the four-way pipes 42, 42 having the valves 43, 43 44, 44 45, 45 The valves 43, 43 are connected with the pipes 46, 46 which in turn are connected with a tank (not shown) containing dyeing liquor. The valves 44, 44 are connected with a source of water supply. The valves 45, 45 are connected with the pipes 47, 47 A which enter the bottom of the liquid supply tank 15 by means of the pipe 48.
The cloth 49 wrapped or rolled around the foraminous plate 18, is surrounded or covered by a foraminous covering or link belt 54 comprising a series of links pivotally connected by the pivots 53, 53 and capable of permanent adjustment and engagement by means of the threaded bolt 50 and the two end members 51, 52. Th s belt or covering 54 has pyramidal members 55, 55, and openings 56, 56, similar to those in the foraminous plate 18, and the links are removable in order to shorten or lengthen the belt 54.
The operation of the device is as follows, it being assumed that the-device is inproper condition for dyeing :-All of the valves with the exception of 43, 43 11 and 60 are closed, and the pumps 37 and 37 started. This draws the liquid from the dissolving tank (not shown) through the pipes 46, 46 42, 42 and forces it through the pipes 29, 29 28, 28 into the chambers of the outwardly extended shells 19, 19 From here the liquid is forced through the tubes 31, 31 32, 32 the battle plates 33, 33 serving to equalize the distribution of the flow and force Qfthe liquid, through the foraminous plate 17, into the chamber 57, through the foraminous plate 18, outwardly through the piece goodsf49, through the foraminous belt 54 and through the pipes 10,12, 13 into the liquid reserve tank 15. The object of this tank 15 is to retain a large quantity of liquor, the use of which will produce much more satisfactory results than will a smaller quantity. When enough liquor has been drawn through the pipes 46, 46, the valves 43, 43
are closed and the valves 45, 45 opened, and thus a complete circulation of the liquor in the tank 15 is obtained. During the dyeing process the reel and the goods thereon and the two shells 19, 19 are continuously revolved within the dyeing chamber which is full of the dyeing liquor,
Nhen the dyeing operation is finished, the" 37 which forces it through the device in exactly the same manner as employed with the dye liquor but thewash water escapes through the pipe 61 to a drain, if desired. The oxidizing or drying of the goods may be accomplished in several ways in order to meet the particular demands. Valves 44, 44 are closed, valves 40, 40 opened, the pumps 37, 37 stopped and pipe 61 connected with a vacuum pump. This will draw air through the valves 40, 40 and through the entire device, if desired. Valves 40. 40 may be closed, and air of the required temperature forced through the valves 41, 41 by means of a force pump. The goods having been thus dyed, washed, oxidized and dried, the flanges 30, 30 and 14 are disconnected, the bolts 9,9, removed and the top member 3 of the dyeing chamber opened upon its hinge. The reel with the goods contained thereon, the shells 19, 19 and the pipes 28, 28 can then be hoisted from within the dyeing chamber by any suitable means. The belt or covering 54 is removed and the goods unwound from the reel. A quantity of undyed goods are wound upon the reel, the belt or covering 54 placed around the goods and held in tight engagement therewith by means of the screw bolt 50 and the end pieces 51, 52. The reel with its attachments placedwithin the dyeing chamber, the top 8 closed and fixed to the bottom member 7 by means of the bolts 9, 9, forming a water and air tight joint between the two, the flanges 30, 30 and 14 are tightly joined and the apparatus is in position for the dyeing operation.
It is evident that, if desired, the reel need not be withdrawn from the dyeing chamber in order to remove the fabric or roll a new lot of fabric thereon. In this event, the top member 8 of the dyeing chamber may be opened upon its hinge, and the reel revolved in order to allow the fabric to be withdrawn therefrom and'the empty reel thereupon being revolved in the opposite direction to cause the fabric to be wound upon it.
It is thus seen that a very considerable amount of time, space and labor are saved by the use of my device, over those generally employed, in which the goods are continually rolled up and un-rolled during the operations. 7
By the uss of a device of my invention, the fabric is wound upon a reel and all of the operations are conducted under exactly the same conditions, without rewinding the fabric, thus insuring 'uniform results at greatly decreased costs. 7 a
I do not limit myself to the particular size, number, form or arrangement of parts as described and illustrated, all of which may be varied without going beyond the scope of my invention as described and claimed.
e What is claimed, is:
1. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a hollow reel comprising imperforate flanges and a perforate body, a foraminous member surrounding the body and spaced therefrom, a foraminous member capable of adjustment under pressure upon fabric wrapped around the first mentioned foraminous member, achamber in which said reel is revolubly carried, a series of tubes connecting the inner face of the perforate body with a source of liquid supply and means for revolving the reel and the tubes.
2. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a hollow reel comprisingimperforate flanges and a perforate body, a foraminous member.
surrounding the body and spaced therefrom, a foraminous member capable of adjustment under pressure upon fabric wrapped around the first mentioned foraminous member, a chamber in which said reel is revolubly carried, a series of tubes connecting the entire inner face of the perforate body with sources of liquid supply, adjacent tubes upon the face of the perforate body extending in opposite directions through the reel to such sources of liquid supply, said tubes being integral to the reel and revoluble therewith and means for revolving the reel.
3. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a dyeing receptacle, a hollow reel revoluble within the receptacle, the reel comprising outwardly extended imperforate flanges connected by means of a perforate body, a foraminous member parallel to the body and spaced therefrom, a jointedforaminous belt capable of tight adjustment around fabric carried by the body, means for conveying liquid to the inner face of the perforate body from opposite ends of the reel, said means being revoluble with the reel, means Copies 0! this patent may be obtained for for breaking the fiow of liquid through said liquid conveying means, means for revolving the reel within the dyeing chamber,

Ina dyeing machine, in combination, a dyeing receptacle,'a hollow reel revoluble within the receptacle, the reel comprising outwardly extended imperforate flanges connected by means of a perforate body, a foraininous member parallel to the body and spaced therefrom, a jointed foraminous belt capable of tight adjustment around fabric carried by the body, means for conveying liquid to the inner face of the perforate body from opposite ends of the reel, said means being revoluble with the reel, means for breaking the flow of liquid through said liquid conveying means, means for revolving the reel within the dyeing chamber, means for forcing liquid or air through the reel, the perforate body, the foraminous for returning it to the liquid forcing means and means for withdrawing the liquid from the dyeing chamber.
5. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a hollow reel, comprising imperforate flanges and a perforate body, a foraminous member comprising a series of upwardly and downwardly extended pyramids with liquid passages therethrough, said foraminousmember surrounding the body and spaced therefrom a foraminous cover similar in form to the foraminous member capable of tight adjustment around fabric carried by the foraminous member, a series of tubes connecting the inner face of the perforate body with a source of liquid supply, means within the tubesfor distributing a liquid equally over the inner face of the perforate body, said tubes being integral with the reel and revoluble therewith, a receptacle in which the reel is revoluble, means for revolving the reel five eents eaeh. by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
