ROTARY ENGINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER JoRGnNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Botary Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rotary engines and particularly to that type of ,suchengines, in which steam or other gaseous propelling fluid is employed to actagainst the pistons and flows or passes through the engine-cylinder transversely with respect to the power shaft, instead of axially therewith, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
One of the important objects of the invention, is, to provide a simple, compact, durable and efficient engine, to be used for various purposes, constructed with special reference to securing a very high speed and to realizing the maximum of efficiency from the motive fluid.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the sub-joined description and explanation.

a whole by the reference numeral 7, and as usual .consists of heads or end members 8 and 9 which are bolted at their peripheries to the casing or circular portion 10 of the cylinder, which portion is provided at a fluid through the pipe 13 which communicates with the pipe or inlet 11 and may be secured thereto by means of a suitable coupling 1 1 in the ordinary manner. As is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the heads 8 and 9 are provided centrally with outwardly extended hubs 15 and 16 respectively, in which the power shaft 17 is journaled, and from which shaft power generated by the engine can be transmitted in any suitable way. Mounted on the shaft 17 within the cylinder and adjacent to the inner wall of the head 8 is a wheel or rotor 18 the hub 19 of which is fixed to the shaft 17 by means of a rod 20 extended through suitable openings in said hub and shaft and so as to fix the rotor on said shaft. The rotor or wheel 18 has on its periphery an overhanging circular flange 21 which extends from the inner surface of the head 8 to the inner surface of the head 9 in such a manner as to fit snugly between said heads but so as to be permitted to rotate there-between without undue friction. The flange 21 of the rotor is located concentrically with respect to the shaft 17 and the peripheral wall 10 of the cylinder and has radial openings or slots 22 formed there-through at equi-distant points for the reception and operation of the wing-pistons and the expansible packing with which each of said pistons is provided at its outer portion. Interposed be tween the heads 8 and 9 and extending from a point near the inlet opening or port 11 to a point near the adjacent portion-of the exhaust or outlet port is a segmental partition 23 which is so located as to fit a portion of the periphery of the flange 21 of the rotor with the arc described by the outer walls is provided with an outward extension 25 which terminates short of the peripheral wall so as to provide an opening 26 between the outer end of said extension and said wall for the outlet of steam or motive fluid, ifany should leak into the space between the par tition and said wall. The inner surface of each of the cylinder heads 8 and 9 is provided with a circumferential groove 27, in a portion of which the partition 23 is located in such a manner that the inner surface of the partition will be flush with the outer walls of the remainder of said grooves, or in other words, the partition is so located with respect to said grooves that the are described by its inner surface will co-incidef said grooves thus forming complete circumferential grooves of the same width in which the edges of the peripheral flange 21 of the rotor will operate.
Mounted on the shaft 17 is a sleeve 28 which extends through an opening in the hub 16 of the head 9 of the cylinder inwardly and by preference abuts against the inner surface of the wheel 18, which as before stated, is fixed to said shaft. The sleeve 28 is loose on the said shaft but is fixed to the cylinder by means of a rod or key 29, see Fig. 2 of the drawings. The sleeve 28 is provided on its periphery with a rectangular flange or extension 30 on which is snugly fitted a cam 31 which will be rigidly held with respect to said sleeve and cylinder. Mounted on the sleeve 28'between the heads 8 and 9 of the cylinder, is a collar or sleeve 32 which is rectangular in cross-section but has a circular opening 33 therethrough in which the sleeve 28 is located. On each side of the cam 31 and encompassing or striding the rectangular sleeve 32 at rightangles to each other, a pair of yokes, each of which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 34, is slidably mounted.
Each of these yokes consists of a pair of parallel members 35 having at their ends inturned portions 36 the extremity of each of which is provided with an outward extension 37, which extensions are approximated and have interposed there-between a wing-piston 38, each of which is firmly secured between the members or extensions 37 by means of bolts 39 or otherwise. The wing-pistons are of sufficient width to fit snugly between the adjacent surfaces of the heads 8 and 9 of the cylinder and of sufficient length when connected to their respective 'yokes or guide members 34, to extend radially at their outer portions to the outer wall of the steam chest. The pistons are extended'radially through the slots or openings 22 in the flange 21 of the wheel 18 or rotor and transversely with respect .thereto as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in'each ofwhich openings is located a block 42 which are pressed toward and against the sides of the pistons 38 by means of coiled springs 43 located in the openings 41 outwardly of the blocks or packing strips 42, which are designed to yieldingly press againstthe sides or faces of the pistons 38 so as to prevent'the leakage ofmotive fluid, yet so as to allow com paratively free radial movement of said pistons. The inner end of each of the wingpistons 38 is provided between the extensions 37 of its guiding yoke with a roller 44' which I rollers are adapted to contact with the edge or irregular surface of the cam 31, which is used for the purpose of actuating guide yokes 34 and the pistons which they carry, inwardly and outwardly with respect to the shaft 17 and the periphery of the cylinder.
Inorder to tightly close the space between the outer periphery of theflange .21 of the rotor, and the inner periphery of the-peripheral wall 10 of the cylinder, as well as the inner surface of the partition 23, each of the pistons 38. is formed at its outer portion with a recess 45 each of which recesses extends from one of the side edges to the other of its pistons and has movably located therein a packing-strip 46' which is outwardly pressed by means of spiral springs 47 located in suitable radially disposed openings 48 formed in the outerv portions of the pistons. Each of the heads 8 and9 of the cylinder, is provided at its portion alongside the inlet port or opening 11, andalongside the outlet orexhaust port 12 with a retaining strip 49 and 50 respectively which are for the purpose of preventing the pack ing-strips 46 becoming dis-located by reason of the pressure of the springs 47 as the pistons pass said openings or ports. It will be observed in Fig. 1 of the drawings, that the retaining strip or guard 50 shown therein is inwardly curved'at its rear portion so as to meet the adjacent end of the partition 23, and this is for the purpose of assisting in the retraction of the wing-pistons 38, which are mainly actuated'by the cam 31 and the guide yokes above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a rotary engine, the combination with a suitably mounted cylinder having communication with a supply of motive fluid and an exhaust outlet, of a shaft rotatably ournaled in the cylinder, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and extended into the cylinder and fixed thereto,a rotor fixed tolsaid shaft and extended therefrom within the cylinder and having a radially slotted pe ripheral flange, a cam fixed on said sleeve, a collar angular in cross-section and mount ed on said sleeve, one or more elongated guide yokes embracingly engaging said collar, rollers on the opposite ends of said yoke or yokes and in contact with the cam, and a wing-piston projected from each end of said yoke or yokes and extended through the radial slots of the flange of the rotor.
2. In a rotary engine, the combination with a suitably mounted cylinder having communication with a supply of motive fluid and an exhaust outlet, of a shaft rotatably journaled in the cylinder, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and extended into the cylinder and fixed thereto, a rotor fixed to said shaft and extended therefrom within the cylinder and having a radially slotted peripheral flange, a cam fixed on said sleeve, a collar angular in cross-section mounted on said sleeve on each side of said cam, one or more elongated guide yokes embracingly engaging said collar on each side of said cam, rollers on the opposite ends of said yoke or yokes to contact with the cam, and a wing piston projected from each end of each pair of said yokes and extended through the radial slots of the flange of the rotor.
3. In a rotary engine, the combination with a suitably mounted cylinder having communication with a supply of motive fluid and an exhaust outlet, of a shaft rotatably journaled in the cylinder, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and extended into the cylinder and fixed thereto, a rotor fixed to said shaft and extended therefrom within the cylinder and having a radially slotted peripheral flange located concentrically with the peripheral wall of the cylinder and at a distance therefrom, a cam fixed on said sleeve, a collar angular in cross-section and mounted on said sleeve, one or more elongated guide yokes embracingly engaging said collar, rollers on the opposite ends of said yoke or yokes and in contact with the cam, a wing-piston projected from each end of said yoke or yokes and extended through the radial slots of the flange of the rotor, spring actuated packing-strips located in the outer portion of each of said pistons, a seg mental partition interposed between the heads of the cylinder and extended from near the inlet opening thereof to a point near the exhaust opening of the cylinder, packing retaining members located in the mouth of the inlet opening, and packin retaining members located in the mouth of the exhaust opening and curved inwardly from said opening to the adjacent end of said partition.
4. In a rotary engine, the combination with a suitably mounted cylinder having communication with a supply of motive fluid and an inlet and exhaust outlet, of a shaft rotatably journaled in the cylinder, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and extended into the cylinder and fixed thereto, a rotor fixed to said shaft and extended therefrom within the cylinder and having a radially slotted peripheral flange. located concentrically with respect to the peripheral wall of the cylinder and at a distance therefrom, said flange having a recess on each side of each of the slots therein, spring pressed packing-strips located in said recesses, a cam fixed on the aforesaid sleeve, a collar angular in cross-section and mounted on said sleeve, a pair of elongated guide yokes embracingly engaging said collar on each side of the cam and located at right-angles to one another, rollers carried by the opposite ends of each pair of said yokes and in contact with the cam, a wing-piston projected from the outer end of each pair of said yokes and extended through the radial slots of the flange of the rotor and between the spring pressed packing-strips carried thereby, spring actuated packing-strips located in the outer portion of each of said pistons, a segmental partition interposed between the heads of the cylinder and extended from near the inlet opening thereof, to a point near the exhaust opening of the cylinder, and in contact with the flange of the rotor, packing retaining members located in the mouth of the inlet opening and packingretaining members located in the mouth of the exhaust opening and curved inwardly from said opening to the adjacent end of said partition.
