Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN REGAN and ALFRED F. MORELL, citizens of the United States, said REGAN residing at New Bedford, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, said MORELL residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Shuttle-Placer for Looms, of which the following is` a specification.
This invention relates to a shuttle placer for looms, particularly adapted for use in a loom equipped withweft replenishing and transfer mechanism.
In looms of this type it is essential that the shuttle shall be very accurately positioned in the shuttle box before the transfer of a new bobbin takes place, and it is the object of our invention to provide improved devices for thus positioning the shuttle.
4In the preferred form of our invention the shuttle vplacer is under the control of the transfer mechanism and is moved to operative position only when a transfer is indicated.
A11 important feature of our invention relates to the provision of means through whichy the shuttle placer is positively actuated from the lay to position the shuttle as the lay is moved forward. Another feature of our invention relates to the provision of means for giving the shuttle placer a compound or diagonal movement as it is advanced tov operative position, whereby a greater variation of shuttle position may be corrected. We have also provided con nections through which the shuttle placer acts as a resetting device and through which. it will become operative as a revoker whenever the shuttle is abnormally displaced.
Further features of our invention relate to certain arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of our invention and a modication thereof are shown in the drawings in which- Figure l is a side elevation of our improved shuttle placer, together with certain parts of a magazine and transfer mechanism with which it may be used;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modied form of connecting link;
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the shuttle placer;
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 5 5 in Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 isa detail sectional view taken along the line 6--6 in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings. we have shown a portion of a loom frame including a breast beam 10 upon which is mounted a bracket 1l supporting a weft replenishing magazine 12. The lay is indicated at 13 and supports the usual front box plate 14 and rear box plate 15.
The shuttle placer comprises an arm 20 pivoted at 21 (Figs. 1 and 4) to a forked collar 22 which in turn swings about a stud 23 fixed in a stand 230 secured to the breast beam 10. The arm 20 is thus mounted for movement both vertically/.and horizontally. A link 25 is pivotally connected at 26 to the arm 20 and at its upper end is pivoted on a stud 27 fixed in a swinging lever 28 (Fig. 2). The lever 28 is pivoted at 29 on the magazine 12, and a laterally extending arm 30 of said lever is connected by a link 31 to the dagger 32 (Fig. 1) through which the transfer mechanism is actuated and controlled.
yWhenever a transfer is indicated, the lever 28 and the stud 27 thereon are moved downward byan arm 33 pivoted at 34 on the magazine 12. The mechanism for moving the arm 33 forms no part of our invention, and for a full description thereof reference is made to the patent to Ryon No. 1,030,748 issued June 25, 1912. For the purposes of this application it is sufficient to state that the arm 33 swings downward whenever a transfer is indicated, which movement through the lever28 and the link 25 permits the shuttle placer or arm 20 to swing downward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
At a point intermediate its ends the arm 20 is provided with a cam surface 40 (Fig. 5) which coperates with a corresponding cam surface 41 on a casting 42 adjustably secured to the stand 230 by a bolt 44. A spring 45 (Fig. 4) is connected at one end to the arm 20 and at the opposite end to the .stand 230, and tends to draw the shuttle placer or arm 20 away from the shuttle box.
The springa. is not strong enough, how-l spring 45 to swing the arm 2O away from the point of the shuttle. A greater displace ment of the shuttle can thus be corrected.

Having described the details of our invention, we will now briefly point out the methodvof operation thereof. The shuttle placer is normally maintained in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1 in which the cam surface 50 is above the level of the roll 51. lVhen'ever a transfer is indicated the arm 33 moves the lever 28 to raise the dagger 32 into the path of a bunter (not shown) carried p by the lay 13. By this movementI of the lever 28, the link 25 is also moved downward, carrying with it the shuttle placer 20, which moves diagonally to operative position. The lay then moves forward and the roll 51 engaging the cam surface 50 forces the shuttle vplacer positively toward the shuttle boX, thus accurately positioning the shuttle therein.
As the lay approaches its extreme forward position the end of the shuttle placer 20 en- Gages an inclined surface 15a on the rear nox plate 15, and is thereby'raised to its inoperative position, such movement of the shuttle placer restoring the transfer mechanism to the position shown in Fig. l. 1f the shuttle is so far displaced that the shuttle placer cannotl correctly position the shuttle, the shuttle'placer will be engaged and lifted by the shuttle itself and the dagger 32 will be moved out of the path of the bunter carried by the lay, thus revokin the transfer.
To prevent injury of the s uttle point, the operativeV portion of the shuttle placer 20 is transversely grooved, as indicated in Fig. 6, this grooved portion projecting beyond the face of the shuttle placer, and being cut away at 20a to clear the point of the shuttle as the shuttle placerrises. Y
While theadvantages of our invention are best utilized in the preferred form alcove de-Y scribed, many ofthese advantages are also retained in a construction in which the shuttle placer is normally in lowered or operative position. When it is desired to use our invention .inthis way, we substitute a link 250 (Fig. 3) for the link 25 shown in Fig. 2. The link 250 is provided with an elongated slot 251 at its upper end, which slot permits the shuttle placer to remain normally Y in `lowered position. Whenever a transfer isV indicated, however, the pin 27 is moved to the lower end of the slot 251, as shown. in Fig. 3, and the shuttleplacer is thus rendered effectiveV to revoke the transfer, orto reset the transfer mechanism, as inV held in inoperative position above ltheplane ofthe shuttle, weft-controlledfmeans to move said shuttle placer downward to operative position in the plane of theY shuttle, and

In a looin'ha-ving a magazine and transfer mechanism, a shuttle placer having a universal connection withY the frame of the' loom, a link connecting 'saidshuttle placer with the transfer mechanism, whereby 'said shuttle placer may be raised and lowered, a cam surface on said shuttle placer, and a cam roll carried by said layand effective to engage said cam surface when the shuttle placer is lowered and to swing said Shuttle held normally in raised inoperative position, weft-controlled means to depress said shuttle placer to operative position before a transfer, and means on the lay effective to thereafter move said shuttle placer horizontally to position the shuttle, said shuttle placer being also movable upwardly by engagement with an abnormally misplaced shuttle and beingeffective to revoke the indicated transfer when so moved upwardly.
7. ln a loom, a shuttle placer pivoted on the breast beam for vertical movement to operative and inoperative positions and for a horizontal operative movement, and means on the lay to move said shuttle' placer horizontally, said shuttle placer being provided with a horizontally-grooved shuttle-engaging portion out away at its forward end to permit upward movement of said shuttle placer to inoperative position after the shuttle-engaging portion has passed to the rear of the shuttle point.
