Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 3, 1917. Serial No. 184,321.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY ELMER MAN- NING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mena, in the county of Polk and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Vaporizer, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a vaporizer intended for use with an internal combustion engine, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide means for introducing moist air to the cylinder of an internal combustion engine in conjunction with the charge, second, to provide means for preventing water from the vaporizer entering the engine, third, 0 provide a container and an absorbent filler therefor, fourth, to provide a simple and eflicient vaporizer.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without. departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Y

Referring to-the drawing by numerals of reference:
A tank 1 of any suitable form, but here shown rectangular, is provided and this tank is filled, or partly filled with some absorbent material such as the sponges 2.
Passing through the upper portion of the tank 1 and preferably longitudinally thereof, is a vaporizing pipe 3 provided with a plurality of perforations 4:. Each end of the pipe 3 extends beyond an end wall of the tank 1 and these ends are threaded to receive the reducing joints 5 and 6.
The reducing joint 5 is formed with a threaded nipple 7 from which extends rearwardly a short pipe 8 which enters the vaporizing tube 3 for a short distance. As will be readily apparent any water due to condensation or other causes which might accumulate in the forward end of the vaporizer 3 will be trapped about the pipe 8 and prevented from finding its way to the engine cylinders.
A pipe 9, to which is connected a union valve 10, is secured to the nipple 7 by a sleeve coupling 11, or otherwise. This pipe 9 serves to connect the tank or container 1 with the intake.
The reducing joint 6 has its reduced end connected by a coupling sleeve 12 to one end of a pipe 13 which extends beside the tank and over the exhaust manifold by the radiation from which it is heated.
An inlet is provided for the introduction of water to the tank 1 and this inlet is closed by a cap 14.
As will be readily understood, air drawn through the hot pipe 13 by the suction of the engine passes to the vaporizing tube 3 where it comes in contact with the water contained in the contiguous sponges 4. The heat of the air will cause some of the water to be vaporized and this vapor will be carried by the air through the pipe 9, valve 10 and intake to the engine cylinder where it will be mixed with the charge.
The introduction of this vapor adds greatly to the force of the charge, causes more complete combustion and does away with carbon deposits and the troubles consequent thereupon.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is:
1. A vaporizer, comprising a tank, absorbent material within the tank, a perforated tube extending through the tank, an air inlet pipe connected to the tube at one end thereof, a pipe extending into the tube at its other end and spaced from the walls thereof, an outlet pipe secured to the tube and communicating with the last mentioned pipe, and a control valve in the outlet pipe.
