To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Louis LAUREAU, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 214 Rue de la Convention, Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool Posts or Holders for Metal-Working Machines, Such as Lathes, Planing-Machines, Shaping- Machines, and the like, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool post or holder for l'athes, planing machines, shaping machines and like metal working machines, the object being to prevent the cutting tools thereof chattering or digging into the work during the cutting "operation, and permit the cutting angle of the tool being adjusted to accord with the character of the work without the necessity of removing or grinding the tool.
The invention will be fully described hereinafter with reference to the annexed drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a lathe equipment embodying the present invention.
Figs. 2 2, 33 and l4= illustrate three different positions of. the improved equipment showing the variations of the cutting angle,Figs. 2 3 and 43 being respectively sections of the tool taken on lines A A, B and C C of Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
Figs. 5 and 6 show two modified forms of the equipment applied respectively to a planing machine and to a shaping machine.
Figs. 7 and 8 are a side elevation and end view of the improved equipment forlathes, planing machines and the like which prevents chattering and engagement of the tool in the piece to be Worked, the arrangement being such that the cutting angle of the tool cannot be modified without grinding the same.
The present invention consists essentially in combining with the tool holder carriage provided with slides, enabling its movement during the operation, a tool connected to said carriage so as to have its cutting edge turned toward the opposite side of the carwith the plan of the carriage slides, and
inclined with relation to the plan of the slides, the connection between the tool, the inclined faced block and the carriage being such that it is possible to cause the inclined faced block to pivot about itself between the tool and the carriage, so as to vary the cutting angle of the tool, without, removing said tool from its holder and without modifying the angle of its cutting edge.
7 Referring to Fig. 1 which illustrates a form of theimproved equipment for lathes, the equipment comprises an inclined faced block 1 which rests upon the carriage b of conventional form. Y
The tool a is fixed upon the block 1 parallel with the inclined face thereof by means of a slotted support 2.
The assemblage (l, 2) is fixed to the carriage in such a manner that by a very simple manipulation the inclined faced block 1 may be pivoted between the support 2 of the tool and thecarriage; this result is obtained by means of a single-bolt the shank 3 of which passes through parts 1 and 2 perpendicularly to the inclined face of the block 1 and the head 4 of which is capable of oscillating about its geometrical axis in the T shaped slot of the carriage in which it is mounted. To afford the desired pivotal movement to the bolt, its head 4 is made of spherical formation and is engaged in a bushing 5 which fits the slot and is provided with a spherical cavity having a conical opening or mouth adapted to allow of the free movement of the head and shank of the bolt. The shank 3 of the bolt passes through an elongated hole 6 in the block 1. It will be readily seen that if the tool a is arranged in the support 2, so that its cutting edge is turned toward the top, and if the tool is brought into contact with the work so that the contact point is at the level of the axis thereof, as in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, and the work is rotated in .the direct-ion of the arrow 3 which is the nut 17 ofthe bolt, and topivotthe inclined 1 faced block 1 between the supportQ, and the carriage'b. Referring to Figs. 22, and 4 4*, it will be seen that for the normal position i of the1block 1 (Fig. 2), the cutting angle of the tool is represented by 0:. If the block 1 is pivoted or turned-to the position shown in .Fig. 3 the ,cutting angle becomes equal to. 6 oc and likewise, if tllQIblOCk l -is pivoted in the opposite direction,'as shown in Fig. 4, the cutting angle becomes equal to z.

In Fig. 6-, which refers to. a shaping machine, the verticallymova-ble tool holdercarriage is designated by 13, the inclined faced block by 14 and the tool by 15. The latter is secured directly on the inclined face of the block by means of a slotted member the the tool in the slot 19 of the said member.
