3 SHEETS-SHEET 3 JAMES R. CAMPBELL, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
MEANS FOR FOLDING- CLOTH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Folding Cloth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for folding cloth and it consists of a frame work secured to the ceiling which supports a carriage which reciprocates and lays the cloth in strips on the table.
The object of this invention is to provide an arrangement which will pile cloth in layers on a table.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the web holding means. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the method of feeding the cloth out evenly.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
6 indicates a frame which is mounted on a suitable frame work attached to the ceiling of a room, this frame work carries two pairs of belts 7 and 8. 9 indicates a series of gear wheels which are operated from a driving shaft 10 and which cause the upper side of the belt 7 to move toward the gear wheels and the upper side of the belt 8 to move away from the gear wheels 9.
11 is a carriage mounted to reciprocate on the frame 6. The side members of this carriage l1 carry a hinged hook member 12 at each side this member 12 having hooks at each end which are adapted to engage the belts 7 and 8. Each hook member 12 has a lug 14: near each hooked end which lugs 14 are adapted to engage one of the wedges 15 which are mounted on the upper side of the frame 6. When the carriage travels to one end the wedges 15 raise one end of the hook member 12 which throws the opposite end into engagement with one of the belts 7 or 8 and thus the carriage is pulled in the opposite direction.

Application filed. May 15, 1917. Serial N 0. 168,845.
The carriage is provided with web holders 16 which are adapted to clamp onto the board which is usually found in a web of cloth. These web holders consist of four parts, the bearing 17, the shaft member 18, the clamping member 19 and the tightening screw 20. The projecting shaft member 18 is journaled in the bearing 17 while its opposite end fits on one side of the board, the clamping member fits onto the other side of the board and has one end grooved into the pivot member. The screw 20 binds the clamping member and pivot member tight to the board. The cloth passes up over the frame 21 which is provided with spreaders 22 and with holders 23, the cloth then goes over the roller 2 1 and down the tray 25 over another spreader 26. At the bottom of the tray 25 I provide a frame 27 which. is rigidly secured to the end of the tray 25. The frame 27 has a perpendicular groove at each end and uprights 28 are slidably mounted in the said grooves. A flat spring 29 presses down on the uprights 28 so as to always keep this part tightly pressed toward the table. Hingedly connected to the lower end of uprights 28 is a spreader 30, which spreader is provided with notches 31 on each side. 32 is an arm coming from the hingedly-connected part of spreader 30 and this arm carries a pin 33.
34 is a table upon which are mounted four sets of uprights 35, between each two sets there is a clamping member36 having teeth on their inner sides adapted to register in the notches 31. Extending perpendicularly from the clamping member 36 I provide an upright 37 near each end and a spring 38 extends from the inner side of this upright 37 to the table. 39 indicates turn-brackets which extend down from the frame 6. These turn-brackets 39 have their inner sides bent at an angle upwardly and are adapted to stop the forward movement of the pins 33 thus turning the arms 32 down and the spreader 30 out toward the end to which the carriage is running. Arms 41 extend on each side of the ends of a casing 27 and these arms carry pins which come in contact with the uprights 37 and push them back thus raising the toothed side of the clamping member 36. When the toothed side of the grab member is raised the carriage pushes the spreader member 30 under it. When the carriage is going back the teeth extend through the notches 31 and hold the cloth from going back with the carriage. The same operation takes place when the carriage goes to the opposite. end, thus the cloth is laid strip after strip.
In the spreader I provide a member &3 which is pushed in from each end or pulled out so as to guide the cloth in the spreader. members 43 in their desired position. The
holes through which the set screw tlextends may be an inch apart and numbered from the center outward so as to be easily set for a certain width of cloth, if desired, they may be any other distance apart.
Onthe under side of the tray 25 I provide a recording machine 45 which has a toothed Set screws 44 hold these guide What I claim as new, is,
A device for spreading cloth in lengths from a Web enroll and? consisting of a frame adapted to be hung from the ceiling, a carriage mounted to reciprocate in said frame, means for supporting the web of cloth in said carriage, trays having V-shaped spreader members; thereon. over which the cloth is adapted to pass, an arm slidably mounted at the free end of the tray member, a spreader hingedly connected to sa d arm, sa d spreader having notches on both sides,
a table, cla1nping members mounted near theends ofthe table, teeth onthe inside of said clamping member adapted; to register with said notches and a means whereby said spreaderextendsunder said teeth when coming toward each end.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. CAMPBELL.
