Application filed May 2e, 1917. Serial No. 170,676.
To all whom t may Gomera;
Be it known that l, lsAAc SAMUEL BUN Nunn, a citizen oit the United States, and a resident oi East Grange, in the county o Essex and State or? New Jersey, have in vented' a new and improved' Negative Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and enact description.
The invention relates to the art o ducing printing media asexempliiied in the application for Letters Patent or the United States, Serial No. 56,297, iiled by me on @ctober 16, 1915. lln the machine described in my application above referred to, use is made of a movable carriage supporting a sensitized iilm, a negative holder movable transversely and sidewise, and adapted to support a negative provided with fancy characters in spaced relation one to the other, and a source ot light having a held capable of embracing at the time but a single one of the said fancy characters, the said carriage, the negative holder and the source of light having movement one relative to the other to allow making successive eaposures oi selected ones or the said ancy characters on the lm and in assembled relation to the matter to be printed. lin the machine described, the negative is irmly attached to the holder and separate negatives and holdersiare provided for each dit ferent set ot fancy characters.
The, object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved negative holder arranged to permit of holding negatives provided with alphabets et 'ancy capital and small letters or other fancy characters varying in height and to permit accurate positioning of a selected character tor malring an exposure on the sensitized film at the same time insuring accurate spacing between successive characters in the 'formation of words and sentences. lin order to accomplish the desired result, use is made oi a base plate having means for removably supporting' a negative, a gage plate slidable sidewise on the said base plate, the said plates having coacting positioning means, and a carrier slidable on the frame. of the machine in a sidewise and transverse Adirection and having means adapted to be engaged by the said positioning means.
A practical embodiment of the invention represented inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross section of the apparatus provided with the negative holder;
Fig. 2 is a plan view oi' the negative;
Fig. is a plan view of the negative holder; and
F ig. e is a plan view of a portion of the holder with the parts in a diderent posi-- tion.
@n the top of the frame 12 or the machine is mounted to slide sidewise a carriage 13 provided with a depending box 14 and provided on its top with a front opening 1'? and a rear opening 18, with a pad 19 of telt or other suitable cushioning means intermediate the said openings 17 and 18. @ver the pad 19 passes a sensitized surface, preferably in the iorm oi' a sensitized film 20 (or photographic paper) which extends through the openings 17 and 1S into the box 14. rlhe iilm 29 extends upward between the feed -rollers 23 and 2.11 arranged within the opening 1?, and the rear end of the nlm 20 passes between feed rollers 25 and 26 extending within the opening 18. rllhe 'feed roller Q5 is turned with a view to ip'eed the iilm 29 rearwardly over the pad 19 whenever it is desired to do so by the operator during the act of printing,
ln order to protect the sensitized film 20 against light, use is made of a protective opaque cover 49, oi' rubber or other suitable fabric material, and provided at its middle directly over the lilm portion overlying the pad 19 with an opening i1 for the passage of light from a source oii light, preferably in the form oi' an elect-ric lamp 93 contained in a casing 92 mounted on an arm 90 mounted to swing upward on the frame 12. rlhe casing 92 is provided in its lower portion with a lens 9a' for directing the rays ot light from the lamp 93 through an opening 95 in the arm 90 and through a stop 99 onto and through the negative to photographically print a corresponding letter ot the alphabet on the film 20, which latter is at the time encompassed by the stop 9G. The
stop 9G is mounted in a suitable holder 97 i removably held on the under side of the arni 90. rlhe negative 50 of a transparent material extends over the opaque cover' Ll() and is provided with an alphabet of fancy capi- Cil tal letters 55 and an alphabet of fancy small letters 56, and each of the letters 55 of the alphabet has associated therewith but spaced therefrom a centering or positioning mark 57 preferably located tlirectly above the exact middle of the corresponding letter, as shown in Fig. 2. A similar ,centering or positioning mark 58 is associated with'each of the small letters 56. The negative 50 is attached at its front margin to a supporting plate-51 provided on the top with rows of capital and small letters 65, 66 with which are associated positioning marks 67 and 68, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. The capital letters 65 and their positioning marks 67 are in transverse alinement with the capital letters 55 and their positioning marks 57, and the small letters 66 and their positioning marks 68 are in transverse alinement with the corresponding small letters 56 and their positioning marks 58. A pointer 70 is at- -tached to the front of the arm 90 and indicates on the letters 65 and 66 and their positioning marks 67 and 68.
In order to permit the -use of a series of.
The base plate 150 is provided with a central member 160 and end members 161 and y 1'62 spaced from the central member 160 at 4the central member 160 and the end member 162, and these arms 165 form slots 166 between them. Corresponding pairs of slots 164 and 166 on opposite sides of the central member 160 are adapted to be engaged with pins 170 and 171 rising from a bar 172 extending within a recess 173 formed in the top of the frame 12, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The recess 173 is suiliciently large to permit the bar 172 to slide sidewise therein and also in a transverse direction. The front and rear wall of the recess 173 are provided with plates 174 and`175 provided at their opposite edges with teeth'176 and 177 adapted to be engaged by corresponding teeth -178 and 179 formed on the front and rear edges of the bar 172.
In order to lock the pins 17 0 and 171 of .the bar 172 in position in corresponding pairs of slots 164, 166 to cause the bar 172 to move with thebase plate 150 when the latter is shifted in a sidewise direction and to allow of moving the bar 172 in a transverse direction with the base plate 150, the
following arrangementis made: The gage plate 153 is provided with arms 180 and 181 spaced apart to form slots 182 adapted to register with the corresponding slots164, 166 or to move out of register with the same as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 4. Each of the arms 180 and 181 is provided with cut-out portions 1,84 to vary in length according to the height of the letters 55, 56 and the spaces between the same on the negative 50. It will be letter 55`or 56 used at the time. When the negative 50 is in position on the holder and the latter is engaged with the pins 170, 171, as above mentioned, then the holder device can be moved transversely' and sidewise to move the corresponding letter in position under the stop 96. In practice the arms 180 and 181 are provided with numerals (see Fig. 3) indicating the height of the letters 55, 56 of the several negatives 50 thus enabling the user to quickly engage the pins 170, 171 with the corresponding slots 164, 1 82 and 166, 183, according to the height of the letters 55, 56 of the negative 50 used at the time. It is understood that the letters 55 and 56 are spaced apart a distance corresponding to that of the transverse movement of the holder so that either set of let- l ters 55 or 56 can be moved in registerA with the opening 41 on shifting the base plate 150 rearwardly or forwardly according to whatever capital or small letter is required at the time for reproduction on the lm 20.
Having thus describednmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l l. In a device for producing printing media, a negative holder, comprising a base plate having means for removably supporting anegative', a gage plate slidable sideand adapted to form slots between them, t. e arms of the gage plate having notches of varying length, and a bar determining the height of a character used at the time and slidable lengthwise and transversely on the frame of the'. machine the said bar having pins adapted to engage corresponding slots.
8. In a dev1ce for producing printing media, a negative holder, comprising a base plate having means for removably support ing a negative, a gage plate slidable sidewise on the said base plate, the said plates having a coacting positioning means, a bar determining the height of a character used at the time and slidable on the frame of the machine'in a sidewise and transverse direction the bar having'means adapted to be engaged by the said positioning means, and
coacting means on the base plate and bar for guiding the bar into accurate and final position and holding it there.
