from the said 'fire box,
JESSE C. MARTIN, JR., OF SAUSALITO, GALHQBNI. Y
LOCOMOTIVE-FIBE-BOX CONSTRUCTION.
To all 'whom t may concern: Be it known that l, JESSE a citizen of the United States, residing at Sausalito, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locomotive- Fire-Box Construction, of which the following is a specification. Y
The hereinafter described invention relates to that class of fire boxes employed in connection with the locomotive type of re box boilers, and more particularly to locomotives using oil as the fuel medium. l
providev end walls that will remain intact and not be shaken down by the vibration yand the jar inservice attendant the use of the locomotive and to so construct the end walls that only a minimum amount of refractory materialv is required in the construction thereof another object being to eliminate the labor of building las well as the expense of maintaining the end wall and in so constructing the same of interlocking units in order that the said walls may be quickly assembled and with the least possible amount of labor and worn or damaged parts thereof quickly removed for repair purposes.
To comprehend .the invention, referenceshould be had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, wherein- Figure l is a Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional viewtaken on the irregular line m-w-F ig. l of the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to' designate an open bottomed fire box of a locomotive type fire box boiler, and 2 a metallic lire pan secured to and depending the said fire .pan being suitably shaped for the work required.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led March a, 1916. Serial No. 82,207. l
C. MARTIN, Jr.
broken transverse sectional view of a locomotive fire box with vthe re' Patenten siam ia, tais,
The said fire pan is provided with side wall 3 and the bottom wall -or floor Ll constructed of the usual refractory material, andfurther provided with the flash end wall 5 and forward end wall 6, and there is interposed v between the said walls 3, Ll, 5 and 6 and the inner metallic wall yof the fire-pan liner 7 constructed of any suitable insulating ina-k Y terial, as, for instance, infusorial earth, asbestos, magnesia, etc;
By the use of the insulating liner for the re pan heat losses by radiation are reduced inclined from top to bottom to receive therebetween the wedge tile B. Preferably the unit members of the end wall tiles are formed with the interlocking tongues and grooves b, and each of the corner tile units on the inner face thereof provided with vertical groove c to receive the interlocking tongue c outwardly projected from the unit members of the wedge tile B.
In the form of the lire pan 2 illustrated there is provided a flanged side wall extension 8, and in such case the'fiash end wall is provided with outwardly extended shoulder extensionsQ which bear on the said iiange sections 8.
The unit members ofthe end walls 5 and 6V are held interlocked oneto the other so as to form` a unit wall, and the corner tile members of the said walls are held securely formed of vertically dis- The corner tiles' A of eachend wall are preferably inwardly' n i to a minimum and by reason thereof lighter Une ofy theobJects of the mvention is to y and rmly in place relative to the side walls of the re pan by means of the wedge tile members, and said end walls are held in vertical position by means of the refractory sidesand bottom walls 3 and 4, inasmuch as the brick work of the said walls bears against the inner face of the end walls.
Inasmuch as the tiles composing the end walls are constructed of a series of small unit members, the same are easily constructed or built up within the fire box structure of the locomotive, inasmuch as the unit members being comparatively small they are easily passed into theffire box through the door opening thereof, and are easily' re- -moved therefrom for purpose of repairing said end wall sections.` v
- `Theiiash end wall is the one which receives the hardest wear, due to the fact that the ame from. the burner impinges directly thereon, hence it 1s of great advantage in' connection with re boxes of the described type that the wall be so construct- 10 ed as to permit of quickv repair work.
. The said Hash end wall extends `Well withthe same in posifire pan'by means of the refractory sides and bottom walls of the fire pan, the said end ,walls maybe constructed much lighter than when formed of brick work construction, for in such case the walls must be ofheavy construction in order to provide against fallin down under the vibratory strains placed thereon.
Having thus described the invention, what is ,claimed as new and desired to be pro tected by LettersPatent is In combination with an open bottom oil brning locomotive type fire box, of a metallic re pan having downwardly inclined 'side walls united to and depending from sald box, refractory sides and bottom Walls for the ire pan, a removable Hash end wall and opposing end wall fitted Within said pan and held in place therein intermediate the ends thereof and the ends of the sides and bottom walls, said end walls being composed of corner tiles and an intermediate wedge tile adapted to 'interlock one'with the other, and each conslstmg of a serles of superimposed interlocked inde endent runitmembers havmg angularly dlsposed end wallsthe`angle e of the outer ends'of saidfcornerY tiles corresponding to the inclination of the tire pan side walls .and the innerends thereof corresponding to the taper of the sidewalls of `'said wedge member vwhereby a 'three unitk constructlon may be employed, the flash end wall extending fromthe bottom of the fire pan to a point within the re box above the mud ring thereof. 1
l In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of a subscribing witness.
