Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 5, 1917. Serial No. 146,550. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. J UDKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Braiding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spool carriers for braiding machines, and has for its object to provide means in the carrier permitting the running speed to be increased over the ordinary style of carrier, said means including'essentially a flexible, yieldable or resilient stop carried by the standard for prevent ing the latch or top weight from flying 0E when thrown quickly upward.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latch having an opening through one of its walls through which opening the spring or resilient stop member projects. This opening also performs two other functions which are: first, itreduces the weight of the latch; and second, by means of this opening the latch having a rearwardly engaging extension may be cast without coring, thereby reducing the cost of the casting to the minimum.
Vfith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 1 i
In the accompanying drawings: 7
Figure lis a side elevation partly in section showing my improved construction of carrier with the spool in position thereon.
Fig. 2is a front elevation of the latch.
Fig. 3is a rear view of the latch.
Fig. 4-is a sectional side elevation ofthe latch.
Fig. 5is an end view of the latch.
Fig. 6-is a perspective view of the stop spring which is attached to one of the faces of the standard. 7
In the operation of the ordinary carrier an unusual pull on the yarn causes a quick upward throw of the tension weight and also of the latch, which sometimes permits the spool to rotate several teeth before the latch can again drop to catch it, and this excessive unwinding action of the spool often causes the yarn to snarl and sometimes allows the tension weight to drop sufliciently to engage the machine stopping mechanism.
ation.
Another'feature of this construction of To obviate this difficulty, I have provided a standard 10 on the frame 11 and have formed a groove 12 on the inner face thereof adjacent the top of the spool 13 and in this recess I have mounted an elongated spring finger l lsecured at its upper end by the rivet 15. provided with an outwardly extending hump or projection 16-with its end 17 turned sharply inwardly into the deeper portion of .the recess 18 in the standard. 2
The lower end of this spring is r, Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Slidably mounted on this improved'form' ofstandard is a latch member 19 having a pawl 20 adapted to engagethe'ratchet teeth 21 in the head of the spool 13. The body portion of this latch is provided with an inner wall 22 adapted to set adjacent. the
spool, which wall is cut out at 23 forming an opening therethrough and providing an upper cross bar from WlllCh the pawl 20 projects; This cut out portion also forms a lower cross bar 25. The rear edges 26 of this latch are provided with narrow fingers 27 projecting inwardly or toward each other, which fingers reach around back of the standard to hold the latch in position in casting without the necessity of coring, 90
thereby considerably reducing the expense of providing these latches'by a casting operlatch is that the hump of the spring stop finger 16 normally extends through this opening 23 in the latch during the operation of the carrier.
The advantages of my improved construction of latch and standard are, first, the latch may be readily positioned on the standard by passing it down over the spring. stop until the protuberance on this spring enters the space 18 in the latch, theend l7 7 of this spring being turned inward abruptly so that when any unusual upthrow of the latch occurs the, edge of the lower cross bar 25 will engage this yieldable stop and prevent the latch from being raised too high once rebound and catch the next adjacent that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A carrier for braiding machines comprising a frame having a spindle carrying a ratchet toothed spool, a standard on said frame having a ,yieldable stop member secured to one of its faces, and a latch slidably mounted on said standard and adapted to engage said stop only when raised above the release position to limit an excessive upward throw.
2. A carrier for braiding machines comprising a framehaving a spindle carrying a ratchet toothed spool, a standard on said frame having a yieldable stop member secured to one of its faces, and a latch slidably mounted on said standard and provided with an opening in one of its walls through which said stop projects to engage and limit the upward throw of said latch.
3. A carrier for braiding machines comprising a frame carrying a toothed spool, a standard on said frame provided with a recess in one of its faces near its upper end, a latch slidably mounted on said standard, a spring atch attached to said standard and provided with a hump adapted to be depressed into said recessto permit said latch to slide thereover on said standard, the underside of said spring being also provided with a shoulder to engage the latchand limit its upward throw.
at. A carrier for braiding machines comprising a frame carrying a toothed spool, a standard on said frame provided with a recess in one of its faces near its upper end, a latch slidably mounted on said standard, the free end of the spring being bent to form a hump, said hump being adapted to be depressed into said recess to permit said latch to slide thereover on said standard, said free end of the spring being'bent abruptly in ward to provide a shoulder to engage and limit the upward throw of the latch.
In testimony whereof I aflix my'signature.
