'IMPROVEMENT lN BANDS FOR SECURING BOTTLE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,866, dated April 16, 1872.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM D. WEATH- ERBEE, of Shrewsbury, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yoke-Bands for Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g which forms a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a fastener for bottlestopper in position, and in the construction of which my improved yoke-band is used. Fig. 2 represents a side view of a section of 'my improved band; and Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view of one portion of the band, as will be hereafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a wire having bends formed therein at given and fixed distances apart, of bent pieces of perforated flat metal, as will be hereafter described.
In the drawing, Fig. 2 represents a side view of my improved band for the neck of one bottle. This band is formed as follows: The wire A is run through a machine which forms the bends a therein. A long narrow strip of metal, rolled to the desired thickness, is also fed or run from a coil, or otherwise, through the machine at right angles to the wire; and the machine is so made that at the proper time a hole, I), is punched in the end of the metal strip, and a section, B, cut ofi'v and bent over and. clamped about the wire, so as to form an eye, 12, the upper part of the eye being formed by the bend a in the wire, and the lower part by the perforated piece of flat metal 13, which is bent and clamped to the wire, as shown in the drawing. The eyes I) are made of proper size to receive the bent ends or journals 0 of the yoke or fastener C, (see Fig. 1.)
This band can be made by hand; but is made to a much greater advantage by proper machinery designed and adapted for this purpose. It can be made very rapidly and in a uniform manner, and cut into sections, as shown in Fig. 2, ready to be used, the sections being made of such length as to suit the size of the bottle-neck upon which they are to be used.
It will'be observed that the ends d d of the wire A are twisted together, as shown in Fig. 1, when the completed device is applied to use.
Bandings of wire have heretofore been made of pieces of wire; but the eyes I) were formed by making a complete bend or loop in the wire to form the eyes, and the operation had to be performed by hand, thus rendering the operation slow and expensive as compared to that by which my improved band is made.
By this mode of construction the eyes b will contain suflicient space to permit the journals 0 of the fastener U to swing freely therein; whereas with the old banding, in which the eyes are formed by a loop of the wire, the loops are drawn so closely around the journals 0, by the operation of twisting the ends together when securing the band to the neck of the bottle, that the banding-wires are frequently broken by the strain caused by swinging back the fastener 0.
Having described my improvement, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved artiole of manufacture, is-
A banding for fastening the yokes of bottlestoppers, constructed of the wire A and perforated metal pieces B, combined together, substantially as described, and as shown in Fig.
2 of the accompanying drawing.
