Description

J. A. TRAUT Q Improvement in Try vSquares.
FIG,
JUSTUS A. TRAUT, OF NEl/V BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY RULE AND LEVEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRY-SQUARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,858, dated April 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J UsrUs A. TRAUT, of New Britain, county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the construction or man ufacture, and the process of that construction or manufacture, of Try-Squares and to enable others skilled in the art to make the same I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in an improvement in the construction of the metal stock of the handle of a try-square, and in' its combination with the blade, and also with a single wooden block, which forms the principal part of the outer surface of the handle.
In the accompanying drawing, a is a metaledge face-plate, (which heretofore, for the most part, has been made or secured to the edge of the wood portion or handle of a try-square.) b is an end face-plate, which covers, protects, and supports one end of the wood which forms the handle proper. c is a metal hub formed in the angle of the two plates a 1). dis a metal rib of thinner stock than that required for the hub c. This hub c and rib d are arranged in the center of the plates a I). These side and end plates at b, hub c, and rib d constitute what I call a stock, cast in one piece, of metal. The faces of these plates are first trued or planed; then the face-plate a is firmly secured or compressed in a milling-machine, and a slit is cut in and nearly through the whole depth of the hub for the reception of the blade 6, and so that when the blade is firmly compressed upon the bottom of the slit it will (at its lower edge) form a true right angle with the face of the plate a; and while it is still compressed in said position holes are punched or drilled through the hub and blade for the reception of pins or rivets ff, which, when they are headed down, will firmly secure the blade of the square in a right-angled position with the face-plate of the stock. h is a wood stock, formed in one piece, which is clamped in a machine and subjected to the action of properly-formed cutters to produce grooves or openings to receive the hub c and rib d and produce the proper shape of its sides and ends, so as to closely fit up to the plates to b; then a pin or screw, i, is inserted into the wood through the orifice i, which secures and compresses the wood h in its relative position on or to the stock.
To recapitulate, the metal stock consists of a face-plate, a, end plate b, hub c, and rib d, in the upper or hub portion 0 of which is cut or formed ,a slot, in which the end of the blade 6 is firmly secured by screws or rivets f f, so as to secure permanent accuracy or right angle of the blade 6 with the face-plate a of the stock, and in order to render it complete and merchantable in finish I have fitted a piece of wood or other suitable material over the rib d and hub c, and closely to the plates a b, and secured it firmly thereto by means of rivets or screws 2', thus distinguishing it in its simplicity and facility of construction, its adaptedness for the trade, and its desirableness for use.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this invention so as to enable others skilled in the art to make the same therefrom.
I do not claim any improvement in a handsaw or in devices for marking combined with a saw, as shown in H. Smiths patent of May 18, 1858; but
I claim 1. A try-square, in which are combined with the blade a metal stock slitted and secured to the blade, as shown, and provided witha flange or rib, a, and a single wooden block, h,s1itted and adapted to both sides of said stock, and applied thereto, all substantially as set forth.
2. Ialso claim, in combination with the blade, the slitted metal stock, provided with flanges a and b, and with a strengthening-rib, d, and the wooden block h, screwed or riveted to such stock, all as shown and described.
