The instrument comprises a front plate A and a back plate B suitably spaced, as by means of spacing blocks A and connected together by screws (1. or the like so as to leave an intermediate space. The front plate is graduated or divided in any suitable manner. For instance. at A a certain length, say 12 inches. may be divided and graduated in fractions of an inch. At A the same length may be divided into decimals or tenths of an inch. It will he noticed that the points D" of the needles are beveled oil in two directions. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the beveling in one direction, and the taper in the other direc tion. is clear from Fig. l.
Any suitable means may be employed for fixing the extreme needle I) in the required position, as shown. In Figs. 2 and 6 there is shown. attached to this needle a screw G which passes through a slot 13 in the back plate and also through a clamping block H. When the nut G is tightened up the needle U and the block H are drawn together and the needle D is clamped to the back plate B. In conjunction with this block H there may be used a micrometer device for Ininu'tely adjusting the needle D This consists as shown in Fig. 6, of second clamp ing block J with a clamping screw J havinga. nut J and passing between the blocks H and J is a screw K carrying a knurled disk or the head L. Above the periphery of this disk L may be a pointer M, which is visible in Fig. 4-, but which has been omitted :trom Fig. 6 for the salre of clearness. If the screw K is provided with forty threads to the inch and it the periphery of the disl: L is divided into twentydive parts it is possible, in the well-known manner, to move the block H accurately through a distance 0t (111(3-tl10l181t11fill1l1 of an inch by first clamping the block .l to the base plate B and turning the dish L through one division. marked on its edge. If the needle D is in this manner moved through one thousandth of an inch the first movable needle l) next the needle I) is moved through one-tenth of a lil101lsandth of an inch. I
It will be clear that when the needles are closed together as shown in Fig. 3 their points are separated a certain distance, which for instance may be one tenth (a an inch. In such a case when. it is desired to measure distances of less than this amount there is provided a second fixed needle N shown in Figs. 1 and 9 This lies iin1nediatcly behind the first movable needle I) when all the needles are closed up. WVhen thereto-re the extreme needle D is moved through one thousandth of an inch the needles D and N, which previously were superposed, will separate one tenth of a thousandth of an inch.
The lower points D of the needles may be suitably shaped to suit screw threads to enable the reading of these to be very easily ascertained.
What I claim as my invention and desire o secure by Letters Patent is 7 in said back plate for locking the extreme needles, and a cursor sliding on said graduated front plate, substantially as set forth.
In combination a slotted back plate, a graduated front plate attached thereto and spaced therefrom, trellis link mechanism between said plates and anchored at one end to one of said plates, a needle fixed relatively to said plates, movable indicating needles between said plates, a sliding connection between each of said needles and a pair of said trellis links, means passing through the slot in said back plate for locking the e treme needles, and a cursor sliding on said graduated front plate and a micrometer adjustncent between said locking means and said extreme needle, substantially set forth.
