Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Horace A. WALTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in package-ties, and the object of my invention is to provide a package-tie which shall be adapted to facilitate the operation 01'' securely tying and binding together, by means of a cord or piece 01 tape newspapers or other articles to form a compact package, in such manner that such cord or tape can be easily and quickly untied and removed, and which package-tie shall embody an inclosed reel upon which said cord or tape may be wound after it is removed from a package thereby to save said cord or tape in order that it may be used repeatedly for like purposes.
1 accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a package-tie embodyin my invention;

Figs. 5, 6, 7 and S are perspective views each of a different detail of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, an annular casing 9 is provided with an annular cover 10, both being made of sheet metal, the cover 10 being indented inwardly with an annular groove 11 as shown.
Extending through the circular side wall of the casing 9 and through its cover 10 to the hole through the central portion of said cover 10 is a radial slot 12.
liotatably disposed within the hole through the central portion of the cover 10 is a bushing 13 that is provided with an inner flange l4: and an outer flange 15, the inner flange 14' being of such diameter that it extends to a circular line adjacent to the indentation made by the annular groove 11, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, both of the flanges let. and 15 being in slipping contact with the inner and outer surfaces, respectively, of the cover 10.
The bushing 13 and its flanges it and 15 are provided with av radial slot 16 extending therethrough; the width of which corresponds to the width or the radial slot 12, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1.
Integral with the flange 15 is a radially projecting arm 17 which extends beyond the annular groove 11 as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 1.
By reason of the thinness of the springy sheet. metal, of which the arm 17 is made, it is adapted to press its outer end portion normally to engage with the outer surface of the cover 10 to assume the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 1.
At a point registering with the annular groove 11 the arm 17 is provided with an upwardly curved oii'sct 18, as shown more clearly in Figs. t and and said arm 17 is provided with a iongitiulinal slot 19 which extends therethrough from a point near the bushing 13 through the curved offset 18 to a point near its outer end, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5.
Disposed within the slot 19 a crank handle 20 provided with pivots which are disposed to be confined in the groove 11 by the spring-like pressure of the inner surfaces 01 the curved offset 18, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and t, whereby said crank handle 20 may be raised from its position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to its position shown in Fig. 4c, in which latt r position it may be manipulated to rotate the bushing 13.
The circular edge portions of the hole through the central portion of the bottom wall of the casing 9 are curved inwardly t0 form a flange and rotatably disposed to surround said flange is one annular member 22, of a hollow reel whose other annular member 23 makes a slidable telescopic joint therewith, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4:, the annular member 23 being illustrated by a perspective view in Fi 7, and the annular member 22 being in a like manner illustrated in Fin. 8.
Within said hollow reel is disposed a helical compression spring 2a which extends be tween the top wall of the member 23 and the bottom wall of the member 22, whereby the force of said spring 24- tends to force the member 23 outwardly from the member 22 to press the outer surface of the top wall of the member 23 against the flange 14: of the bushing 13.
The top wall of the member 23 is provided with two diametrically opposite holes 25, as shown more clearly in Fig. 7, and at diametrically opposite points in the flange 1e are conical indentations 26, both of which are shown only in. Fig. 3 and one of which is shown in Fig. 5, said conical indentations 26 being disposed to adapt them at required. times to enter the holes 25 in response tothe action of the spring 24 whereby when the bushing 13 is rotated by the manipulation of" the crank handle 20, then the hollow reel formed by the members 22 and 23 will rotate to wind upon it a cord or tape, as the cord 27.
The cord 27 is knotted at both of its ends with knots 28 and 529, respectively, which cord 27, before winding, is disposed with its knot 28 at the flared entrance of the hole through the central portion of the bottom. wall of the casing 9, to extend therefrom through the reel, thence to turn over the top thereof between the opposite edges of the slot 16, thence through the slot in the circular side walls of the casing 9, whereby when the crank handle 20 is manipulated to revolve the bushing 13 then one of the side surfaces of the slot 16 of the flange i l will engage with the cord 27 to carry it with the reel formed by the members 22 and 23 to wind the cord 27 thereon to dispose it in the position shown in Fig. 4. whereupon the crank handle 20 is swung downwardly into the slot19 to the position shown in l 2.
With the cord thus disposed within. the casing 9, it is ready to be unwound to bind a bundle of newspapers or other articles into av package, orto tie around the paper wrapping of a bundle of any form; and to unwind the cord 27 for use, the crank handle 20 is raised out of the slot 19 and the bushing 13 is turned to dispose the slot 16 of its flange 14: to register with the radial slot of the cover 10 and the casing 9, whereupon the crank handle 20 is again swung downwardly into the slot 19 and then the knot 28 is grasped by ones fingers and pulled with sufficient force to press the member 23 farther into the member 22 thus to disengage the conical indentations 26 from the holes 25, whereby a continued pull exerted on the knot. 28 will cause the cord 27 to unwind, beginning with the innermost naeaae'r layers first, and when said cord 27 is wholly unwound. the knot 29 and the adjacent end portion of the cord 27 raised upwardly tlu'ough the slot 12 to permit said knot 29 to be disposed the entrance of the flaring hole through the member 523, as shown in Fig- 3, thus to provide an untangled cord which may be extend d around a package and there securely and quickly fastened by winding its end. portion adjacent to the knot 28 around its opposite end portion at a point between the under surface of the casing 9 and the surface of said package.
In an obvious mannenthe cord 27 may be unfastened from the package and" then rewound on the reel within the casing 9 by first pulling the cord 27 to dispose the knot 28 at the flared entrance of the hole through the bottom of the casing 9, then laying the cord 27 over the top surface of the member 23 to extend through the slot 16 of the flange 14: and thence through the slot 12 out of the side wall of thecasing 9 whereupon the crank handle 29 may be turned again to wind said cord 27 on the hollow reel to assume its position, shown in Fig. 4, in the manner hereinbefore described.
A package-tie made to embody my invention may be repeatedly used for tieing pacle ages without ever tangling its cord whereby much cord may be saved and whereby much time will be. saved in the operation of tieing a cord around a bundleorpackage of newspapers, letters, magazines or other mailable articles.

1. A. package-tie of the class described, which embodies a hollow annular casing; a hollow annular reel concentrically disposed to be rotatable within saidcasing; a flanged bushing rotatably disposed within the hole through the central portion of one of the opposite walls of said annular casing and adapted releasably to engage its flange with said rotatable annular reel; said flanged bushing, its flange, and said one of the opposite walls of said annular casing being provided with a radial slot extending from said bushing); to and through the peripheral wall of said inclosing case; a cord extending.
