Be it known that I, .Wi nrA R. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Lancaster, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Capping-0ft Sticks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clean. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to whichv it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in capping off stick for glass cylinders, the object being to provide a simple and easily operated, hand tool for quickly and accurately capping off glass cylinders and for cutting the latter up into smaller sections, and it consists in a handle carrying two pernwee tly d een e end e er es heatingwire permanently attached at one end to one of said contacts and attached at its other end to a reel carried by a frame detachably secured to the handle and adapted to be brought in engagement with the other contactv when the parts are assembled for use.
My invention further consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully explained and. pointed out in the claims.

In the use of the device the operator disconnects the removable frame 9 and passes the same over the cylinder as shown in Fig. 6. As the. frame acts as a weight on the end of the wire, it will be seen, that by a very simple manipulation of the wire, the frame can be swung forwardly under the cylinder so as to be conveniently reached by the operator, who then passes the hook 23 on the frame over the stud, after which he releases the plunger 25 which moves into the notch '26 in frame 9 and locks the latter to the stick,
The cylinders vary but slightly in diameter so that the free wire between the block 3 and the reel is usually sufficient to embrace the cylinder, and any variation in size can be taken care of by letting out wire from the reel or winding up the surplus.
' After the frame carryingthe reel has been secured to the stick, the wire surrounding the cylinder is drawn tightly into contact with'the latter, and when so drawn will be 7 under the tension of the spring in the reel,
' blocks 3 and 4, as shown in Fi 1 so that the latter will then yieldingly pull on the tigntened wire, thus providing for contraction due to cooling and elongation of the wire due to heating. After the wire has been properly applied to the cylinder, the switch lever 1-1 is moved to close the circuit, and the current passing through the wire 16 rapidly heats the latter, and the heat being communicated to the cylinder causes the same to breakor fracture on the heated line.
' The heating of the wire causes it to elongate, but this elongation is taken care of by the spring in the reel, which winds up the latter and takesup the slack.
In order to heat the cylinder the gap between the wires where the latter engage, the
i, the opera- ;tor shifts the stick up or down thus carrying the hot wire into contact with the portion of the cylinder that was in the gap. To make another cut, the frame may be removed from the stick and applied as before, or the wire loop embracing the cylinder may be slightly enlarged'by letting out some wire and then moving it along the cylinder to the proper 'point.

A glass severing tool consisting of a body having two terminals for the heating wire, a frame detachably secured to said body, a shaft mounted in said frame, a ratchet wheel fixed to the shaft, a pawl carried by the frame and engaging the ratchet wheel, a reel loosely mounted on the shaft, a spring connecting the shaft and reel whereby the latter is rotated by the shaft but has a yielding movement thereon, a heating wire secured at one end to one terminal, and at its other end to the reel, electric conductors connected with said terminals and a switch for closing the circuit through the conductors and heating wire.
