ROTARY PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2h, 2min Application filed June 15, 1916. Serial No. 103,836.
7 To all whom it may concern:
better understood, T
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in rotary pumps and it is an object of the invention to provide a pump of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be operated with equal facility irrespective of the direction of rotation of the rotor.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved rotary pump wherein the suction opening is so positioned as to substantially entirely eliminate a knock of the blades or abutmentscoacting with the rotor when said blades or abutments come 1nto contact with the fluid at the suction opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved rotary pump wherein a series of rigidly connected diametrically opposed blades are employed together with means coacting with the intermediate portion thereof to impart the requisite adjustment of the blades relative to the stator.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide the lower Wall of the cylinder or bore within the stator with anadjustable liner in order to compensate for the wear at this portion of the bore or cylinder and which is occasioned by sediment such as grit, sand or the like.
The invention consists in the details of forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, fvherein- Fr .1'6 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a pump constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line -4? of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through my improved pump with the rotor omitted and illustrating a pair of blades operatively positioned relativeto a coacting cam;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a pair of connected blades, detached.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a stator of predetermined dimensions and including a casing or shell 1 provided with the supporting legs 2 and having the portion thereof below the horizontal plane intersecting the axial center of the shaft 16 semi-circular in form, while the portion thereof above said horizontal plane is disposed in converging planes and with the top thereof provided with the openings 4 and 5 serving, respectively, as the suction opening and the discharge opening, although it is to be noted that the positioning of these openings permits their function to be reversed. It is also to be noted that the openings 4.- and 5 are positioned directly above the rotor R and that the portion intermediate said openings depends within the stator S or more particularly the bore or cylinder B thereof a distance sutliciently as to closely approach the periphery of the rotor, and it is to be further observed that the inner walls of said intermediate portion are disposed in downwardly diverging planes for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my'invention appertains.
The lower portion of the wall of the bore or cylinder B of the stator S is provided with an elongated depression'or recess 6 in The lower portion of the bore or cylinder B of the stator S is provided with the transversely disposed grooves or recesses 10 in which are positioned the bars 11, the upper faces of which contacting with the under face of the liner 7, while the under faces of said bars have coacting therewith the adjusting screws 12 threaded through the lower portion of the casing 0r shell 1, whereby it will be perceived that the requisite adjustment of the liner 7 may be readily and conveniently effected.
The heads 8 are provided with the alined openings 14 defined by the inwardly disposed fixed circular cams 15 with their high points a disposed downwardly and in a plane perpendicular .to the lowermost point of the wall of the bore or cylinder B of the stator S. The cams 15 are positioned at the axial center of the bore or cylinder B while the openings 14 are eccentric to said axial center and arranged thereabove. Intersecting the stator S and disposed through the openings 14 thereof is the driven shaft 16.
Fixed to the shaft 16 intermediate the cams 15 is the hub 17 of the rotor R and from which radiates the equidistantly spaced spokes 18, four in number and having their extremities connected by the annular member or rim 19 of a width substantially equal to the distance between the heads 8.
The spokes 18 are split, as indicated at- 20, said split being continued through the annular member or rim 19 whereby the split portions 20 afford guides for the blades or abutments 21, said blades being arranged in pairs, the blades of each pair being diametrically opposed and connected by the intermediate web or shank 22. Each of said shanks 22 midway its length is provided with an elongated eye 23 having its major axis perpendicularly disposed relative to the longitudinal axis of the connecting shank or web 22.
Each of the eyes 23 has disposed therethrough one of the cams 15, said eye at points in longitudinal alinement with the intermediate web or shank 22 of the coacting blade being provided with the inwardly directed bosses 24 having their inner faces straightand adapted for contact with the cam. By this arrangement it will be perceived that upon rotary movement being imparted to the rotor R, the blades or abutments 21 will be properly adjusted relative to the wall of the bore or cylinder B of the stator S to effect the pumping operation.
It is also to be noted that the openings 4 and 5 are positioned at opposite sides of the vertical plane in which is positioned the shaft 16 but in close proximity thereto so that the blades or abutments 21 irrespective of the direction of rotation of the rotor R will come in contact with the fluid with a minimum of knock which would otherwise materially affect the successful use of my improved pump.
It is also to be noted that the blades 21 are of a length substantially equal to the distance between the heads 8 and that the interposed web or shank 22 of each pair of blades is arranged adjacent an end thereof, and that the interposed web or shank of one pair is arranged adjacent one of the heads 8, while the second shank or web is positioned adjacent the second head. Each pair of blades, from tip to tip, is a little less than the diameter of the bore or cylinder B as it is to be understood that the distance between the tips of each pair of blades is such as to permit the blades to travel within the bore or cylinder B without friction and to compensate for the varying positions of each pair of blades relative to the axial center of the bore or cylinder B during the rotation of the rotor.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pump con- 'structed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein 100 shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A rotary pump of the class described comprising a casing having inlet and outlet 105 openings, a driven shaft disposed through the casing, a rotor fixed to the shaft, a stationary cam arranged within the casing, and diametrically opposed blades carried by the rotor and movable inwardly and outwardly 110 relatively thereto. said blades being connected by an intermediate shank. said shank intermediate its length being provided with an elongated eye to receive said cam, said eye being provided with inwardly directed bosses 115 disposed longitudinally of the shank and having their inner faces straight, said straight faces contacting with the cam.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 20
WILLIAM B. CAMPBELL.
