BATH SPRAY-FIXTURE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb.. 26, 191%.
Application filed April 9, 1917. Serial No. 160,664.
To all lwlw/1t t may Concern:
Be it known that l, BERNARD l). SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have .invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Bath Spray-Fixtures, of which the following' is a specification, containing a full, clear, and exact description, references being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. j
My invention relates to improvements in bath spray fixtures, wherein a sprinkler head, is arranged for ready attachment to or detachment from mixing faucets, of varying sizes, as commonly employed on bath tubs, and in which the perforations are arranged to discharge jets of water vagainst the entire inner surface of the tub, and which head is provided with a defiector, serving to confine the issuing water within the limits of the tub.
My object is to provide a bath spray fixture, for use in bath tubs, of simple, inexpensive and durable construction, and arranged for ready coupling with any ordinary mixing faucet and provided withmeans for confining its discharge within the limits of the bath tub.
My improvements consist in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as fully, clearly and concisely set forth in my specification, pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional eleva tion of a bath tub equipped with a fixture constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the fixture with a portion of the deflector broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the fixture, partly broken away and in section and showing it as coupled to a mixing faucet.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates a bath tuband 5 a mixing faucet of the type having a detachable hose coupling 6, all of which in their specific constructions form no part of my invention and which may be of any of the well known constructions, shapes or styles.
In my drawings l show the discharge end of the mixing faucet provided with a conically ground seat 7 and internal threads 8 arranged to receive the hose coupling 6, having a conical head 9 and a stem 10, which. is held to the .faucet by a sleeve nut ln its lateral walls there are orifices 13 preferably extending throughout the entire lateral walls in order to direct jets of water in all directions against the walls of the bath tub, and by preference the orifices in the forward central portion of the body are of greater capacity and in closer relative an rangement than the orifices in the remainder of the lateral walls in order, first, to direct a greater volume of water, that is a number of jets of relatively large volume, forwardly in the central portion of the tub to play upon the body of a bather therein, and secondly, to direct jets of lesser volume to play on the entire inner surface of the tub, thereby causing the water for the bath to heat the entire tub, preparatory to a bath and causing the spray to keep the entire inner surface of the tub cleansed.
Arising from the body 12 is a tubular stem 14e, which is externally threaded at its upper end and arranged to receive thereover a sleeve nut 15, having at its top a lateral flange 16 and having wings 17 for ease of manipulation.
Arranged between the end of the hollow stem 14 and the iange 16 of the winged sleeve nut 15 is a compressibleV gasket 1S,
`centrally apertured to fit over the stem 10 of the coupling member, and, having an annular groove 19 rendering it more readily conformable by compression to the stem 10 and adapting it for use to stems of different diametrical dimensions.
The orifices l'aredisposed to direct jets of water, within the limits of the tub, but in the event foreign matter should partially obstruct one or more of the orifices and change the course of the jet to cause it to discharge outside the limits of the walls thereof.l I have provided a deflector 20 which, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, stands in a position to confine the jets within thelimits of the` tub.
lThe device as a whole is applied to the mixing faucet by simply slipping the gasket over the stem of the coupling 6, then by turn ing the sleeve nut 15 compressing the gasket between the flange 16 and end the lill tubular stein to makel a uid tight and frictionally held joint between the gasket and stem l0. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is f A spray attachment to bath tub'faucets comprising means forv attachment to a faucet, a chamber of small depth compared with its Width and having` its bottom Wall directed across the flow from the faucet, a perforated arcuatev front Wall havingthe perforations therein of dierent sizes, the perforations of greatest size being at the middle, thereby confining the entire spray substantially to the sha-pe of a bath tub, a perforated rear Wall for directing a Washing spray over the wall of the tub adjacent the faucet, and a stationary deflector projecting beyond the chamber for confining the spray Within the tub, the aforesaid combination constructed for arrangement below the faucet to which it is attached.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
