Be 1t known that we, ERNEST SCHROEDER and JOI-IN N. TooKER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Syracuse, in theV county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Carton-Sealing Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention is directed to certain improvements in the construction, form, arrangement and operation of the several parts of a carton sealing machine whereby the cartons to be sealed are rapidly and accurately fed into position to have their open tops closed and sealed andas rapidly and accurately delivered, the danger of the machine becoming clogged by the inaccurate feeding or delivery of the cartons being obviated.

The invention is also directed to means whereby the carton with or without its wrapper may be' successfully sealed without changing the parts of the machine.

rllhe main drive shaft' of the machine is denoted by 1 and it is constantly driven, as,
the arm 5 of the paster frame 6 and at its upper end in suitable bearings in the bracket 10 carried by the stationary upright bar 11 of the paster frame.
The paste transferring wheel 12 is fixed to thetop of the shaft 7 and its periphery contacts with the face of the paste fountain disk 13, which disk is fixed to a shaft 14 mounted in the bracket 10. This fountain disk l13 is positively driven from the shaft 7 by the bevel gears 15, 16.
The paste 'fountain 17 is carried by an adjustable bracket 18 having arms 19, 20, slidably mounted on the stationary upright bar 11. A screw 21 engages the paster frame 6 and the arm 19 of the fountain bracket 18 for adjusting the fountain vertically to the desired position.
A sleeve 22 surrounds the main drive shaft l, which sleeve is mounted in the arm 4 of the paster frame and is provided with a drive pulley 23 located at the side of the drive pulley 3 of the main drive shaft, which pulley 23 is driven by the belt 2 when the belt is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The drive of this pulley I23 may be discontinued by shifting the belt 2 onto the pulley 3, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
A cross shaft 24 is mounted in suitable bearings in the arm 4 of the pastor frame 6 and Aon the main frame 25 of the machine, which shaft 24 is driven from the sleeve 22 through spiral gears 6, 27. Two longitudinally arranged cam s `afts 28, 29, mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame25 are driven from the cross shaft 24 through spiral gears 30, 31, 32 and 33,' respectively.
A stud shaft 34, mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame25, is driven through gears 35,36, from the cross shafts 24. and the stud shaft 34 drives .a crank shaft 37 throughthe mutilated gears 38, 39. A cam shaft 40, mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame, is also driven from `the stud shaft 34 through the gears 41, 42.
The'cam shaft 29 drives the upright shaft 43 mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame 25 'at the feeding in end of the machine. through the bevel gears 44, 45. which upright shaft 43 drives at the desired speed through the spiral gears 47, 48. the shaft 49, of the belt pulley 50 around which the endless belt -46 travels.
The upright shaft 43 drives a longitudinally disposed shaft 51 mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame through bevel gears 52, 53 which shaft 51 in turn drives the' short upright vshaft 54 through the spiral'gears 55, 56. VThe shaft 54 is mounted in suitable bearings in a carriage 57 slidably mounted on the longitudinally arranged rod 58 and the shaft 51. The upright shaft 43 reciprocates the carriage 57 through the crank 59 and pitman 60. The
upright shaft 54 is provided with the rotary arm 61 havin the paste applying segment 62 arranged 1n position toengage the periphery of the paste transfer wheel 12 every revolution of the arm 61.
A skeleton guide, arranged longitudinally of the machine, is provided for the cartons as they are fed into the machine from the endless belt 46, which guide comprises the twol side walls 63, 64, having inwardly turned bottom anges 65, 66, along which the cartons travel from the feeding-in end of the machine to the table 67. This table 67 has a wall 68 against which the cartons are successively pushed by the carton advancing means.
The tops of the side walls 63, 64, of the skeleton guide are provided with converging guides 69, 69, for truing up the flaps at the open top of the carton as the carton is forced from the skeleton guide into position on the table 67. v
The carton advancing means is arranged to jmove the cartons lntermittently along the skeleton guide and it is constructed and arranged as follows: Two longitudinally arranged stationary bars 70, 71, are located adjacent to the bottom of the skeleton guide. The hubs 72, 73, of two rocking levers are mounted on these bars between the ends 74, 75, of a reciprocating carriage 76 also mounted on these bars. A rod 77 connects the ends 74, 75, of the reciprocating carriage 76 and a wedge shaped cam 78 has a limited sliding movement on said rod 77.
Theupper arms 79, 80, of the two rocking ievers, carry blocks 81, 82, arranged to be brought into and out vof frictional engagement with the opposite sides of the cartons through the side walls 63, 64, of the skeleton guide. The lower arms 83, 84, of the levers are arranged in position to be engaged by the movable wedge-shaped cam 78. This cam 78 has a depending lug 85 which is connected by a link 86 with the long arm 87 of a rocking lever pivoted at 88 to the main frame. This lever is rocked longitudinally of the machine by a cam 89 on the shaft 40, which cam engages a stud or roller 90 on the long arm 87 and a stud or roller 91 on the short arm 92 of the said lever.
The cartons are moved laterally o the table 67 onto the longitudinally reciprocating folding and sealing carriage 93 (to be hereinafter described). by the following mechanism, viz: A pusher 94 movable laterallv of the machine over the table 67 is pro vided with an upper slide plate 95 slidable in grooves in the table'67 upon opposite sides of the elongated slot 67 A lower slide plate 96 is also slidable in grooves in the table 67 immediately below the upper slide plate 95. This lower slide plate is reciprocated laterally of the machine by a rocking 1,257,745 llt lever, the long arm 98 of which is connected to the lower slide plate by a link 97. This lever is pivoted at 99 to the main frame and rocked outwardly by a cam 100 on theshaft 28 which engages a stud or roller 101 on the long arm 98 of the lever. rl.`he lever is rocked inwardly'by a cam 102 on the shaft 28, which engages a stud or roller 103 ron the short arm 104 of the lever.
Means are provided for interlocking the upper and lower slide plates 95 and 96, which means is under the control of the carton about to be pushed laterally from the table 67 onto the carriage 93. Said interlocking means comprises a rock lever pivoted at 105 to the main frame, the upper arm 106 of which lever projects normally a short distance bevond the wall 68 into position to be engaged by the carton and pushed backwardly thereby when the carton is properly placed on` the table 67 in front of the pusher 94.
The lower arm 107 of the lever supports a laterally and vertically slidable locking pin 108. This pin slides vertically through the lower slide plzrte 96 and is arranged to be moved into and out of a hole 109 in the upper slide plate 95 by the movement of the carton controlled rocking lever.
ril`he upper end of the pin, even when in its lowered position, projects slightly above the lower slide plate 96 and the upper slide plate 95 is provided with a depending lug 110 arranged back and in the path of travel of the projecting end of the pin 108 so that the pin will. because of its engagement with said lug, always return the pusher 94 to the limit of its outward movement even though the pin be withdrawn from the hole 109 in the upper slide plate by the release of the upper arm 106 of the carton controlled lever, thus permitting the free feeding of a succeeding carton onto the table 67 in front of the said pusher 94. rilhis pusher 94 is provided withY a flush side 111 for closing the delivery end of the skeleton guide while the carton on the table 67 is being moved off therefrom:
'lihe flap folding and sealing carriage 93 heretofore referred to, reciprocates longitudinally of the machiner on the shaft 29 and in the tracks 112, 113, of the main frame. The carriage is reciprocated through the pitman 114 and the crank 115 of the shaft 37. A considerablel dwell is provided for the carriage at both limits of its movement by the co-action of the mutilated gears 38, 39, to permit the carton to be pushed onto the top of the carriage when the carriage is at the limit of its movement toward the feeding-in end 'of the machine and to be pushed ofi' from the top of the carriage when the carriage is at the limit of .its movement toward the delivery end of the machine.
A pocket is provided on the top of the carriage for receiving the carton from the table 67 when pushed therefrom by 'the pusher '94, which pocket comprises the relativcly xed side walls 116, 117, and the reciprocating expeller 118 movable laterally of the machine, which expeller is operated to push the carton olf from the carriage 93 into the delivery chute (to be hereinafter described) on-the table 67, after three of the flaps have been folded and the paste applied to the fourth top flap.
The means for moving the expeller outwardly comprises the cam 119 on the sleeve 120slidably keyed to the shaft 29, which cam engages a stud or roller 121 on the long arm 122 of a rocking lever pivoted at 123 to the main frame and connected at its free end to the slide 124 of the eXpeller 118. The expeller is moved inwardly by a cam 125 on the sleeve 120, which cam'engages a stud or roller 126 on the short arm 127 of said rocking lever. Means are carried by the side walls u116, 117, of the pocket for folding two opposite top flaps of the carton, said means including the wings 128, 129, hinged, respectively, at 130, 131, to the upper arms 132, 133, of two rocking levers pivoted at 134, 135, to the carriage 93, the lower arms 136, 137, of which levers are provided with studs or rollers 138, 139, engaging the faces of the cams 140, 141, on the rotary sleeve 120.` The wings'128, 129, are provided with arms 142, 143.. which are connected to the upper ends of cam rods 144, 145, by links 146. 147, which cam rods slide in suitable guides on the said two rocking levers. The lower ends of these cam rods 144, 145, are provided with studs or rollers 148, 149, engaging the peripheries ofthe cams 150, 151, on the sleeve 120.
Springs 152, 153, engaging the cam rods 144, 145, serve to hold the studs or rollersV 148, 149` onthe cams 150. 151, and tend to swing the wings 128, 129, upwardly into their opened positions,
A spring 154 serves to hold the studs or rollers 138, 139, of the rocking levers against their cams 140, 141, and tends to swing the upper arms of said levers toward each other.
Means are carried by two brackets 155, 156, uprising from the top of the carriage 93, for folding the third top flap of the carton over the two above-named top flaps, which means includes a wing 157 pivoted to said brackets 155, 156, and provided with an arm 158 connected `to the upper end of a rod 159, the lower end of which is connected to a cam lever 160 hinged at 161 to the carriage and provided with a stud or roller 162 engaging the periphery of a cam 163 on the rotary sleeve 120. A spring 164 engages said rod `159 and serves to hold the stud or roller 162` on the cam 163 and tends to swing the wing 157 upwardly into its open position.
It is to be understood that the rotary sleeve 120 is moved along'the shaft 29 with the carriage 93.
On the table 67 beyond the pusher 94`there is located an open ended delivery chute for receiving the cartons from the folding and sealing carriage 93, which chute 1s arranged laterally of the table 67 and comprises theI The carton may or may not be provided with the wrapper167 shown in Figs. 21 to 24; inclusive. When it is provided with the wrapper, the carton is preferably passed through the machine, turned halfway around from the position which itoccupies when being passed-through the machine without the wrapper, thus changing the relative folding of the third and fourth top flaps.
The top flaps of the vcarton are denoted by 168, 169, 170, 171, and they form the extensions, as usual, of the four sides 172, 173, 174, 17 5, respectively, of the body portion of the carton. The tongued top flap 169 of the carton has a slightly different shape When the carton is provided With the Wrapper 167 so that the folding in of the Wrapper with the top flaps is facilitated.
Proceeding to describe the operation of this invention it will be first observed that the paster mechanism other than the paste applying arm, maybe driven continuously through the shaft 1 whetherthe balance of the machine is or is not being operated, thus preventing the gumming up or hardening of the paste. This will insure a more even transfer of the paste to the segment on the rotary arm of the paste applying device.
When the machine is operating for folding and pasting, the filled cartons, with their open tops, are fed into the receiving end of the skeleton guide bythe endless belt carrier Where they come under the control of the carton advancing means, levers of which alternately frictionally engage and release the cartons through the operation of the wedge-shaped cam 78 of the lever carriage 76 upon the lower arms 83, 84 of said levers. As each carton is advanced along the skeleton guide toward the delivery end of the same, the converging guides 69, 69, will engage the two opposite sides of the open top of the carton and true the same up. The carton is then forced out through the delivery end of the skeleton guide by the succeeding cartons onto the table 67 against the wall 68 and in front of the pusher 9,4. The carton will press back the projecting arm 106 of the pusher controlling lever thereby causing the locking pin 108 to lock the upper pusher slide 95 to the lower slide 96, which lower slide is connected to and operated by the lever 98, 104. In the meantime, the folding and sealing carriage 93 has been moved into position to bring its carton receivinfr pocket opposite the pusher 91 and there rought to rest by the coaction of the blank surfaced mutilated gears 38, 39. As the pusher is moved forwardly it will push the carton off from the table 67 into the pocket on the carriage 93. As the carriage starts toward the delivery end of the Inachine the folding wings 128,129, will start the folding of the top flaps 168, 170. Where the carton is not provided with the wrapper 167, the wing 159 will start to fold the flap 169 down onto the flaps 168, 170. After these three top flaps have been folded, the paste will be applied to the inner face of the top flap 171 by the segment 62 of the rotary paste applying arm 61. The movement of the carriage 57, which supports the rotary paste applying arm 61, bears such a relationship to the movement of the carriage 93 that the paste will be 'applied to the inner face of the top flap 171 of the carton by a rolling motion of the segment 62 over said Hap. In the meantime, the folding wings 128, 129, have been Withdrawn by the swinging movement of the upper arms 132, 133, of the two rocking levers, to which the wings are hinged. As the carriage reaches the limit of its movement toward the delivery end of the machine, the carton carried by its pocket will be brought opposite to the delivery chute and the expeller 118 is operated to push the carton off from the carriage93 onto the table 67 into the delivery chute beneath the anti-friction rollers 166. This movement of the carton will draw it from beneath the '..f'ing 157 and will cause the first anti-friction roller 166 to fold the fourth top flap 171 down onto the other flaps and seal the same. By the time the carton has passed entirely through the delivery chute beneath the several anti-friction rollers, the top of the carton will have been thoroughly sealed. Any suitable means may be employed for receiving the folded and sealed cartons from the delivery chute. When the carton is provided with the wrap-per 167, the flap 171 is folded down over the flaps 168, 170,' and the tongued flap 169 is the one which receives the paste and is the last one folded.
Fromvthe above description it will be seen that the cartons are moved through the machine in successive longitudinal, lateral, longitudinal and lateral paths, a reciprocating friction means being employed for advancing the cartons along their first-named harman top daps of the carton being folded and adhesive applied to the fourth top flap while the carton is passing along its second-named 'longitudinal path, the fourth top Hap being folded and sealed while the carton is pass ing along its second-named lateral path. 'llhis arrangement permits a very rapid and effective folding and sealing of the carton, the correlation and arrangement of the parts being such as to produce a very compact machine wi'th a minimum number of operating parts.
It furthermore permits. the continuous running of the paster mechanism irrespec- Vtive of the operation of the balance of the machine, thus preventing the hardening of the paste and its ineffective application when the whole machine is running.
It will also be seen that the carton must be accurately placed in front of the pusher before the pusher can be interlocked with its reciprocating means, thus preventing any damage to the carton if inaccurately placed in front of said pusher.
The novel movement of the first two flap folding wings, whereby they are lswung down into their folding position and then Withdrawn from the top of the package, in such positiompermits a very rapid folding of the top of the carton, the folding of the third flap not requirin the withdrawal of the folding means for t e first two top flaps before its operation is started.
It is evident that changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our 1nvention; hence we do not wish to limit ourselves strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
What we claim is p 1. In a machine of the character described, a carton guide, reciprocating means intermittently gripping the cartons for advancing them alon said guide, and converging guides for truing up the flaps at the open tops of the cartons as they are advanced.
2. In a machine of the character described, a carton guide, a reciprocating carriage, levers thereon having arms for frictionally engaging the cartons to intermittently advance the cartons along said guide and a cam movable on the carriage for controlling the action of said levers. i x,
3. In a machine of the character described, a skeleton carton guide and means for interf mittently advancing the cartons along the guide comprising a reciprocating carriage,
oppositely arranged levers carried thereby l having arms projecting through the open sides of the guides for engaging the cartons, and a cam movable on and with the carriage for controlling the action of said arms.
4. In a machine of-the character described, a longitudinally arranged carton guide, a laterally movable pusher, and reciprocating means intermittently gripping the cartons rfor advancing the cartons along the guide into position in front of the pusher.
5. In a machine of the character described, a longitudinally arranged carton guide, a laterally movable pusher, friction means for intermittently advancing the cartons along the guide into position in front of the pusher, and a reciprocating folding and sealing carriage for receiving the cartons from the pusher.
6. In a machine of the character described, a carton guide, a pusher and its reciprocating means, means for advancing successive cartons along the guide into position in front of the pusher, and means controlled by the cartons for locking the pusher to its reciprocating means including a locking pin and a rocking lever. v

In a machine of the character described, a stationary support, a horizontally reciprocating folding and sealing carriage adjacent thereto, means on the support for feeding the carton in a lateral direction to the carriage when the carriage is in one position, means on the carriage for expelling the carton in a lateral direction when the carriage is in another position, and means for causing the carriage to dwell an appreciable time at its receiving andexpelling po sitions.

In a machine of the character described, a stationary support, a longitudinally reciprocating folding and sealing carriage adjacent thereto, laterally movable means on the support for feedinga carton to the carriage when the carriage is in one position, laterally movable means on the carriage for expelling the carton when the carriage is in another position, and means for causing the carriage to dwell an appreciable time at its receiving and expelling positions.

In a m'achine of the character described, a reciprocating carriage having a carton receiving pocket, a pair of rocking levers pivoted on the carriage, wings pivoted on the levers, means for rockin the wings on the levers to fold two op osite top flaps of the carton, means for foFdin the third and fourth top ila s, and means ffor rocking the levers to 'wit draw the folding wings from under the third top flap.
22. In a machine of the character described, a reciprocating carriage having a pocket arranged to receive a carton with its top flaps open and its bottom ilaps closed and cam controlled means movable with said carriage for folding the top aps of the carton.

In a machine of the character described, a reciprocating carriage having a carton receiving pocket, means on the carriage for .folding three of the top flaps of the carton, means for applying adhesive to `and carton expelling means coactin the fourth top flap, a delivery chute having a series of anti-friction rollers along its to Wit one of said anti-friction rollers for olding and sealing the fourth top flap.
25. In a machine of the character described, mechanisms for moving the cartons through the machine along successive longitudinal, lateral, longitudinal and lateral paths, means for folding three of the top flaps and applying adhesive to the fourth top flap while the carton is passing along the second-named longitudinal path and means for folding and sealing the fourth top flap While the carton is passing along its secondnalned lateral path.
26. In a machine of the character described, a longitudinally arranged carton guide, means for advancing the cartons along the same, a laterally movable pusher, a longitudinally reciprocating carriage, a laterally movable expeller, a laterally arranged delivery chute, the advancing means, pusher, reciprocating carriage and expeller serving to move the carton through the machine, and means for folding and sealing the carton.
