DAVID M. VALENTINE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENTJN TOP-PROFS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,772, dated April 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Oarriage-Top Prop, invented by DA- vin M. VALENTINE, of the city of New York, in the county and State ot' New York.
Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of my improved carriage-top prop. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new detachable carriage-top prop; and has for its object, by being detachable, to permit the ready and neat application of the covering and avoid the cutting of too large or misplaced holes.
The ordinary props now in use have to be fastened in place before the cover can be stretched, and project, therefore, against the latter. The cover must be perforated to iit the prop and permit it to protrude. This necessitates the preparatory perforation, which frequently turns out to be misplaced. From this cause unsightly holes often appear through carriage-tops in the vicinii y of the props, and often the holes do not insure a proper fit. Another form of prop is that Whose plate is fastened ou the outside of the cover subsequent to the latters application, and which greatly mars the appearance of the carriage.
In the drawing, A represents the fasteningplate of the top-prop. It is, by screws or other means, secured to the supporting-frame or seat. B is the leather covering of the carriage. C is the prop screwed into the plate A through the cover B. The cover is orneed not be perforated for the admission of the prop until after it has been properly stretched over the carriage-top. The prop is then applied, receiving afterward the thimble a, the bows, and the head-nut b. In order to prevent the prop from working loose by spontaneously unscrewing, it can be locked to the plate A by a pin, key, or other means after having been put to its place, or else a prismatic danged washer, d, havin g prongs e that pierce the plate A, may be placed upon the cover B and around G to receive a prismatic sleeve, f, that slides on a portion of G, which is also made prismatic. Thus, while f is within the flanges of washer d, the prop cannot he revolved or unscrewed. It can only be taken off after the sleeve has been drawn out of the washer d. Other fastening devices may, howevelgbe substituted for the one just described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The iianged washer d, having the prongs e, and arranged in conjunction with the prismatic sleeve f on the detachable carriageprop C, substantially as herein shown and described.
DAVID M. VALENTINE.
