einen,
JOHN STRAKA, OF CHICAGO ILLINOIS.
BILLIARD-CUE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOI-IN S'rnaka, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cues employed in playing billiards, pool and similar games, and more particularly a cue having a slidable striking or ball-engaging portion, and an actuating device therefor.
The invention has for its object to provide a cue of the kind stated which is easy to handle and operate, and by which all manner of strokes are made possible.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the saine may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of a forward portion of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the rear portion thereof. y
Referring specifically to the drawing, the main body of the cue is composed of two alined tubular sections 5 and 6, respectively, connected by a flexible metal tube 7. In this portion of the cue is housed a rod 8 having connected to its rear end a iiexible cable 9 on the rear end of which is a cap 10 and a guide ring 11, the latter fitting snugly and slidably in the rear section 6. rIhe rod and its rear flexible section 9 are connected in axial alinement by a coupling sleeve 12, said sleeve also carrying a guide ring 13. The rings 11 and 18 center the rod section 9 in the cue sections 5 and 6, and said section extends across the iiexible joint between the cue sections.
The forward end of the cue section 5 is closed by a leather plug lelhaving a central aperture through which the rod 8 slidably passes, and beyond said plug the end of the rod is fitted with a tip 15. Between the plug le and the sleeve 12, a spring 16 is coiled Specification of Letters Patent.

around the rod 8 said spring tending to retract or draw the rod rearward.
The rear end of the cue section 6 is entered by a rod 17 having its forward end fitted with a plunger head which may be av leather disk 18 secured by a suitable clamping sleeve 19. On the outside of the cue section 6, the rod 17 is fitted with a hand grip 20. The rod 17 enters the cue section 6 through a leather plug 21 secured to the rear end of said section by a sleeve 22. Intermediate its ends, the rod 17, inside the cue sec tion 6, has a collar 23 to prevent its entire withdrawal from said cue section.
In use, the cue is held by grasping the section 5 with one hand, leaving the other hand free to take hold of the grip 20. Upon pushing forward on the grip, the rod 17 is advanced, and when the plunger 18 strikes the cap 10, the parts 8 and 9 are slid forward, the tip 15 striking the cue ball. The character of the stroke can be regulated by withdrawing the rod 17 more or less to obtain the necessary impact of the plunger 1S against the cap 10. By providing the cue with a rear section 5 flexibly connected to the forward section 5, the latter can be held down in fixed and rigid position while the stroke is made. rihe flexible connection relieves the cue tip from shock, and lateral deviation on account of the suddent start of the `stroke jarring the cue sidewise. The spring 16 serves to return the parts S and 9 after propulsive effect thereon by the plunger 18 is spent. It will be understood of course, that the part- 9 has sufficient stiffness to transmit to the rod 8 the impact of the plunger 18 against the cap 10.
I claim 1. A cue comprising a.- stationary tubular body portion which is in alined forward and rear sections, dexible tubular connection between said sections, a movable striking rod mounted in the forward section and projecting therefrom, said rod having a flexible part extending through the aforesaid eXible connection and provided at its rear end with an impact head, and an actuating plunger for the rod'mounted in the rear section and adapted to engage the impact head.
2. A cue comprising a stationary part,
a movable striking stem carried thereby, and an actuating plunger for the Stem carried by the stationary part, said stationary part being composed of forward and rear sections which are flexibly connected.
3. A cue comprising a stationary part, a movable striking stern carried thereby, and an actuating plunger for the stem carried by the stationary part, said stationary part being composed of forward and rear sections which are flexibly connected, the striking stem having a flexible part extending across the connection between said forward and rear sections.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
JOHN STRAKA.
