Application filed May 18, 1917. Serial No. 169,484.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatIfNArnnn M. Lownrn-a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and State of. Pennsylvania, have -'invented certain new end useful Improvements in To con otive-Tenders, of which the following is a; specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
with fuel bins and with Iheans for advancing the fuel from the rear end o'f the bin either to bring it within easy reach of the fireman or to deliver it to a stoke-r mechanism. 4
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the motor which uctuates the fuel advnncing means. In devices of this character the motor is usually located at the rear end of the bin, either being housed within or mounted above the water tank; and it has been the usual practiceto control such motor by means of I a system of levers operated by a hand crank or wheel located at the forward end of the is hereinafterdescribed, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure-1 1s a detail vertical longitudinal section of the tender;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional detail of the motor and a'preferred form of distributin valve; and
ig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of construction-of the valve.
The tender is generally indicated by the numeral 10, and is provided. with a fuel bin" 11 over the bottom. of which reciprocates a pusher head 12,-actuatcd by e fluid motor 13 oused Within a casing 14 built into the water tank 15. As thus fat-described the device is substantially ideuticabwith that The invention relates to tendersprovided V provides for an forming the subject of 'a'pending' application of Edward Ryan, Serial No. 104,142.
.The motor 13 is of the single stroke reciprocating type, being provided with a piston 16 and a. distributing valve, the casing of which is designated 17. Fluid pressure, such as steam or com ressed air, is supplied to the valve casing mm a suitable source of supply throu h a pipe 18, and an-exhaust p1 19 leadsi om this casing. The. distri uting-valve is controlled by means of a relief valve 20, shown as positioned below the forward end of the tender and connected with thevalve casing by apipe 21. and operated by a hand wheel 22- .Within easy reach of the operator, and connected with the valve 20 by means of affod 23.- Steam. or pressure ports 25, lead fronr the valve casing tov the opposite ends of the motor cylinder 13, and exhaust ports 26, 27, lead from the opposite ends oftlle cylinder Patented Feb. 26, 1 918.
to the valve casing and enter the. le e tween the'pressure. ports. The exhaust ports are sopositioned with reference to the cylinder that they are out oil or closed by the piston 16' :before it reaches" the cylinder. heads, in orderto provide a'cushioning action.
The distributing valve 28 is cylindrical in form and-cha1nb ercd, being open at one end, as shown. at 29, its opposite end -36 be ing closed and constituting a piston, there being adjacent this piston head lateral ports 30, 30, adapted to register, in one position of the valve, with the pressure port 24:. The length of the valve is such that in. the position of Fig. 2 the pressure port 24 is uncov-- ered, the ports 30 being out of register with the port 25. The valve is provided with an annular peripheral cavity 31, adapted. to alternatelyuncover the exhaust ports 26, 27, and being at all times open to theexhaust pipe 19. p The valve is controlled by means of a piston 32, rigidly connected to it by means of a stem 33 and being of greater diameter than the valve-and reciprocating inv a oyhn: I
-d rical extension 34 of the valve casing. The
shown as extending throngh'the piston 32, ualization of reseure upon both sides of t 0 piston; As
sure at t-he valve side 0 the piston 82 meta epres.
between this the effective pre onderance of area on the oppogite side 0 the piston 32 causes the llllngg0f the valve to the'position shown in 1g. v
The relief valve 20, which may be of any suitable form of construction, is of greoter capacity than the passage 35, and when opened exhausts the steam from the outer end of the cylinder 34;, whereupon the pressure upon the opposite face of this piston moves it to the right and shifts the valve to close the pressure port 24 and exhaust port 27 and open the pressure port and exhaust. ort 26. The motor piston 16 is thereupon riven to the opposite end of the cylin der, and there remains until the relief valve 20 is closed. -As soon as the pressure is again equalized at the opposite sides of the piston 32, the valve is moved to the left the position shown in Fig. 2, and the motor piston. returned to the position there shown In order to advance the pusher heed. 12.2 from the position. shown in Fig, l, the open utor opens the relief valve ill) by manipulating the hand Wheel 22, and soon as: the advance stroke completed he closes this valve and the pusher heel is withdrawn. under the fuel in readiness for the next edvnnce stroke.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the
l distributing valve 87 is shown as having a solid body with an annular exhaust cavity 38, thepressure ports 2-4, 25, communicating with the motor cylinder being alternately uncovered by the body of the valve and the valve casing 39 being-provided with a duct "40, into which the steam pipe enters and. which leads to both-ends oi the casing. The
and pressure is equalized on both sides of the iston through the lay-pass steam pi e 18 and the pipe 21 leading to the relief valve 20 may be located in any evailable space without interfering 1th 'anyofthe other mechanism of the tender,
such as the draft gears and brake devloes.
In' itsb'roed'er aspects, the invention is not piston and the piston head 36,
of the pusher head, the motor. and its metributi'ng valve, and the relief valve, and various changes may therefore be mad from the structures disclosed without departing from it.
I claim as my invention-- l 1. In a locomotive tender huvin av fuel bill, in combinzmion a reciprocating fuel pusher in. the bin, 2: s1ngle-stroke fluid motor for actuating the pusher, a fluid-controlled distributing valve normally open to one end of the motor cylinder, and a relief valve for controlling the distributing valve.
2 In a locomotive tender havin a fuel bin, in combination, a reciprocating fuel pusher in. the bin, n singlestroke fluid motor for oat-touting the pusher, e fluid-controlled dietrihuting valve normally open to one end of the motor cylinder, and a valve for eontrolling the dietributing valve.
In locomotive tender having afuel bin in combi ttion, e l"fi 2i}l 1()flltbll1g fuel pusher in the bin, einglestrolne fluid motor for actuating; the pusher, e iiuirbcontrollerl distributing valve mun'uillyopen to one end r of the motor cylinder and having a normally pusher in the bin, 3 single-stroke fluid. n o- .torfor actuating the pushera .distrlbutmg valve of the piston type, 32 controlling piston reciprocating in the casing of'the valve and connected to the valve, e-normally ogien pipe leading from n source of pressure to the casing of the valve and communicating; therewith between the valve and the piston, a bypass for delivering pressure to opposite side of the piston, and valve for relieving pressure trimsmitt l through the Icy-puss.
5.711 s. locomotive tender having 21 fuel him in comliiimition y'msher head reciprocable in the bin for advancing fuel; asingle stroke actuating motor back of and connected with the head, a pressurecontrolled distributing valve for the motor normally open to one end of the motor cylinder, and a relief valve located at the forward end of the tender for controlling the distributing valve.
