I TAB CONSTRUCTION FOR INDEX-CARD GUIDES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Isaac WAGEMAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tab Constructions for Index-Card Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to index card guides and has a special reference to the tab construction for such guides whereby indicating members may be detachably and inter-' changeably applied to the tab of an index guide, be held thereon against disengagement and be visible for information with respect to the matter filed adjacent and indicated by such guide. More specifically, my invention relates to tips formed of a transparent material, such as celluloid or the like, which may be secured to an index card guide and applied to the tab thereof, being provided with structure whereby a strip of material, as paper or the like, may be inserted and detachably held between said tip and the tab on the guide. It is the primary object and purpose of my invention to rovide a device of this character which s all be of novel structure adapted to thus detachably hold strips containing indicating matter, said device also inclu ing in its structure sections which at their ends are secured to the tabs of the cards in such manner that they are not subject to destruction during the use of the guide, being in fact secured to the indicating tab at each end thereof very firmly so that the celluloid material is not rendered liable to various strains which would tend to break or destroy the same. Many other features of novelty for attaining this end together with others not specifically enumerated will be apparent as understanding is had of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;

The indicating card guide 1 is of conventional structure and of rectangular outline being provided at its upper edge with an upstanding tab 2 while at its lower edge substantmlly midway between its ends a proection 3 1s made having an opening 4 therein through which a rod may be passed to retam the guide in a draweror other receptacle. My invention may be applied to this or simllar guides, irrespective of the exact structure of the guide or the particular pos1t1on of the tab 2 on the upper edge thereof.

The device which is to be applied to the tab 2 1s formed of celluloid, preferably though any similar suitable transparent materlal may be used and includes a back 5 bent forward at its upper edge as indicated at 6 and thence downwardly forming a front face 7 parallel to the back 5. Between the ends of the device the upper portion 6 thereof is extended forwardly to form a top 8 which is then extended downwardly to make the front side 9 and thence to the rear makmg a bottom ledge 10. This part of the device is formed integral with the remaining portions thereof and the opening 11 at each end thereof permits the entrance of a strip of material such as 13 on which indicating characters are printed. After it has been inserted the strlp 13 is pressed by the part 9 to the rear against the tab 2 of the guide whereby said strip is retained against accidental displacement. This outwardly proeetmg or embossed section is shorter than the length of the front 7 of the device whereby at each end thereof sections 14: are provided to lie closely against the front surface of the tab 2 and adjacent each end thereof. In addition each section 14 adjacent its opening 11 is reduced in thickness and tapered substantially to a thin edge as indicated at 12 so that strip 13may be readily and easily entered through either opening 11,

'such strip after entrance resting above and which the indicating characters are printed may be inserted between said embossed por .tion and the tab, the indicating characters being visible on account of the transparent material of which the device is made.

With a device of this character secured to the tab of an indicating card guide the sections 14 are secured to the ends of the tab at each end and are not subject to breakage or destruction inany other manner by reason of the engagement of the fingers of one using the guide wit-h the ends of the tabs. When devices for holding and guiding indicator strips of this character have portions thereof at the ends of the tabs free from such tabs, one using the guides in turning them over usually catches the tabs at one end with the fingers and in the turning process subjects the material of the device to a considerable strain and wear which in time tends to destroy or injure such device. My

( invention elimmates this possibility of injury and at the same time makes a holder for indicator strips such that these strips may be detachable from the indicating card guides, and interchangeable at will and at all times visible for information respecting the matter filed adjacent the guide.

I claim:

1. In combination, a card guide havin a tab projecting therefrom at its upper e ge, a device formed from thin transparent material including a back and front piece connected at their upper edges covering the tab and adjacent portions of the ide and secured thereto, and an embosse portlon projecting from the front piece of said device, said embossed portion terminating at each end short of the ends of said' front piece,

there being openings at'each end of the em- 7 tab bossed portion for the insertion of a strip having indicating characters thereon, substantially as described.

2. In combination, a card 'de havin a pfojecting therefrom at 1ts upper e ge, a su stantial y channel like device of thin transparent material including a back and front piece connected at their upper edges by an integral connecting section, said device covering both sides of the tab and adjacent portions of the card guide and secured thereto, the back and front pieces being cut to conform at their upper portions to the formation of the tab, and an embossed portion struck outwardly from the upper portion of the front piece between the ends thereof, having an opening for the insertion of a strip carrying indicating characters between the tab and said embossed portion, said front piece at each end of the embossed portion including sections secured to the tab flush with the edges thereof.

3. In combinatlon, a card tab-projecting therefrom at 1ts upper e ge, a device formed from thin transparent material including a back and front piece con-' nected at their upper edges covering the tab and adjacent portions of the guide and secured thereto, and an embossed portion projecting from the front piece of said device including a front vertical section, a lower ledge, and an upper covering section, said embossed portion terminating short of the ends of the front piece thereby leaving sections of the front piece at each end of the embossed portion adapted to be secured to the tab flush with the ends thereof each of said sections adjacent the embossed portion being tapered rearwardly to substantially a thin edge, substantially as described.
