Be it. known that 1, Isaac U. MARLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene- Generators, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide an acetylene gas generating apparatus, so constructed that a pressure-actuated device arranged in the generating chamber acts through variation in the gas pressure to control the carbid feed and thus cut off or open the carbid supply as the case may be, the least variation of pressure acting to close or open the supply as the variation may be above or below the pressure desired and at which the apparatus is adjusted to work.
A further object is to provide a pressure regulator which may be set to operate at a high pressure or at a lowpressure and at the varying pressures between as the occasion may require and which is active under all conditions to perform a successful operation. V 7
Yet another object is to so construct the parts that the generator is portable and the apparatus may be moved from place to place without danger of the accidental supply of carbid to the water, and without danger of the water finding its way into the car- 7 bid receptacle. It is also an object to arrange the parts in a manner that in the filling of the water tank all possibility of the water rising above a predetermined level and thus flooding the carbid receptacle is precluded.
Vith other objects in view, whichwill be referred to, my invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure l is a "iew in side elevation of the generator tank with parts broken away more clearly to illustrate the structure.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the disclosure in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the carbid hopper valve seat.
The generator tank 1 has a carbid hopper 2 mounted in the upper end thereof and it is the intention that the generator tank be filled with water to the level indicated at 3 and that carbid be dropped from the hopper into the water where gas is formed and rises to the gas storage chamber 5 which is provided in the upper part of the generator tank above the water level.
' The carbid hopper 2 is made tapered toward its lower end and at its extreme lowest point has an-outlet opening 6. flange 7 is placed around the upper end of the tank 1 and the upper edge of this tank and the upper edge of the carbid hopper 2 'are rolled over to be received in a recess formed on the upper face of the flange ring 7, a generator head 8 being secured upon this flange ring 7 by bolts or in any other suitable manner, and provided with a carbid supply-opening 9 which is closed by a screw plug 10.
A carbid valve 11 is carried by a bellcrank lever 12 mounted adjacent the carbid opening 6 and may be swung to a position to close against the valve seat 13 provided around the opening 6 and which latter has a knife edge to be received against the valve 11 to form a. tight joint. A pressure actuated device is provided to control the opening and closing movements of the valve 11 and this pressure regulator comprises a diaphragm chamber 14 which is connected to have communication with the gas storage-chamber 5 a diaphragm 15 is mounted in the diaphragm chamber and a stem 16 is connectedwith the free end of the bellcrank lever 12 and is secured to this diaphragm 15 so that as the diaphragm is actuated the valve will be opened or closed. A coil spring 17 is received around the stem 16 behind the diaphragm 15 and an adjusting screw 18 is provided to adjust the tension which this spring exerts against the diaphragm. This stem 16 extends through the adjusting screw 18 which is made hollow and at its outer end is screw threaded, the nut 19 being received thereon to be screwed up tight against this adjusting screw 18 to hold the valve 11 closed against operation.
A filling tube 20 is connected with the generator tank preferably in the body pori tion, an overflow tube 21 is connected prei erably adjacent the filler tube and at a height that the water will be always maintained at the level indicated by the dotted line at- 3, and these tubes are provided with V valves 22 and 23, a common operating lever 24 being provided to open the valves simultaneously when it is desired to fill the generator tank and thus preventing an over-supply of water to the tank.
The bottom of the tank is preferably made dished and a sludge paddle 25 is mounted to be rotated adjacent the bottom, a crank 26 being provided to extend through the side of. the tank to be at a position to be operable from the exterior thereof. A
sludge discharge-pipe 27 is connected with the bottom of the tank 1 and this pipe is controlledby a valve 28.
