Description

IN VEN TOR.
C ea ge 120w c dw /mwa ATTORNEY Patented Fb.19,1918
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. PIKE, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE W. H. GUNLOCKE CHAIR CO., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CHAIR.
Application filed April 2, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon J. PIKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to chairs, and its object is to provide an improved chair back which shall be strong and which may be readily and economically manufactured, and also to provide an improved me hod for making chair backs.
This object is attained by the structure and process hereinafter described, such structure being illustrated in preferable form by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a chair;
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the upper member of the chairs back;
Fig. 3 is a like view of the same after its lower edge has been cut away;
Fig. 4 is a like view of the lower member of the chairs back;
Fig. 5 is a like view of the same after its upper edge has been cut away; and,
Fig. 6 is a vertical central section of the chairs back.
The chair 1, having the seat 2 and pedestal 3, is provided with my chair back 4, whose extremities, in the construction shown, extend on either side to form the arms 5. This back may be supported on the seat, as in the construction illustrated, by the stumps-one appearing at 6and by 7suitable rods or spindles, as that shown at The chair back is made in the following manner: Two members, being an upper member 8 and a lower member 9, are fashioned in arcuate form as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, as by steaming and bending wooden strips which may be of uniform width and thickness. The lower edge of the upper member and the upper edge of the lower member are cut away so that the portion removed from each member decreases from a maximum depth at the middle of said member toward its extremities. The line of such cutting away as to the upper member 8 is shown in dotted lines 10 in Fig. 2, said member after being so out being illustrated in Fig. 8; while the line of cutting as to the lower member is shown in dotted Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Serial No. 159,088.
lines 11 in Fig. a, said member after being so cut being illustrated in Fig. 5.
The members thus prepared are securely joined together, the lower edge of the upper member to the upper edge of the lower member, as by gluing and by the dowels 12 and screws 13, all illustrated in Fig. 1. This done, the concave surface of the united members is preferably dressed or trimmed down to the dotted line 14 in Fig. 6 along and adjacent to their meeting line, so as to remove the angle formed at said line and provide smooth inner surface of the chair back. The united members may be trimmed into a desired contour, as shown at the upper edge 15 of the chair back in Fig. 1. It will be seen that this construction of the chair back with its chair arm extensions lends itself readily to the positioning of the middle or rear portion at a higher level above the seat than the extremities or arm portions thereof, as shown in Fig. 1.
The invention being intended to be pointed out by the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction shown or described.
I claim:
1. The method of making a chair back which consists in forming two arcuate members, then cutting away those edges of the members which are to be joined together so that each cut-away portion decreases from a maximum depth at the middle of the member from which it is out toward its extremities, and then joining the upper edge of the lower member and the lower edge of the upper member securely together.
2. The method of making a chair back which consists in forming two arcuate members, then cutting away those edges of the members which are to be joined together so that each cut-away portion decreases from a maximum depth at the middle of the member from which it is out toward its extremities, then joining the upper edge of the lower member and the lower edge of the upper member securely together, and then trimming down the concave surface of the united members at and adjacent to their meeting line.
3. A chair back comprising two arcuatemembers securely joined together at their edges, the meeting edges having been cut away so that each cut-away portion decreases from a maximum depth at the middle of the member from which it is cut toward its extremities.
l. A chair back comprising two arcuate 5 members securely joined together at their edges, the meeting edges having been cut away so that each cut-away portion decreases from a maximum depth at the middle of the member from which itis cut to- Ward its extremities, and the concave surl0 face of the united members being trimmed down at and adjacent to their meeting line.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE J. PIKE.
