WINDING-INDICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr MAZER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of McAlester, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Winding-hdicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to winding indie-a tors for watches, graphophones or other devices, which show to what extent the device has run down and when it needs winding up.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and elfective form of mechanism for this purpose which can be located in the ordinary watch movement without increasing the size of the space required for such movement and without the necessity of changing the standard construction.
T 0 these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a face view of a watch with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of the back of the movement; Fig. 3 is a reverse view of that shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a View showing the lever setting device in operation; F ig. 5 is an enlarged section on line 55 Fig. 3; and F i". 6 is a section on line (3-(S Fig. 8.
The numeral 2 designates a suitable watch to which my invention is applied, said watch being provided with the dial 3 in connection with which the indicator hand 27 operates to indicate the extent to which the watch has run down. The watch is of the ordinary stem-winder type provided with the stem 5 which has the bevel-gear 6 meshing with the crown-wheel 7. This crownwieel is provided with the usual upright teeth 8. The main spring barrel 9 is of the ordinary type and said main spring barrel is held down by the bridge 7). The ordinary ratchet wheel 10 meshes with the crown wheel 7. All these parts thus far referred to are the ordinary parts of the watch and do not need further description.
The gear-wheel 11 meshes with the upright teeth 8 of the crown-wheel. This wheel 11 is connected with the dust cap 12 and the wheel 13 by means of the bushing 14:. The post or arbor 15 is provided with the pin 16 which is preferably formed integral therewith, and on said pin is mounted loosely the planet-wheel 17 which meshes with the sun-gears 13 and 18. The gearwheel 19 is rigidly connected with the gearwheel 18 and said gear-wheel 19 is formed ith the cup-shaped 0r recessed portion 20 which in conjunction with the dust'cap 12 acts to inclose the sun-gears 13 and 18 as well as the planet-wheel l7 and prevents the entrance of dust to interfere with their proper movement.
l'he pinion 21 is rigidly secured to the post or arbor 15, said pinion having a shank which is driven down into said post. The pinion 21 is of the same diameter as the portion of the post or arbor 15 which it engages so that in taking the planetaries apart the pinion 21 can be drawn through the opening in the cup-portion 20 of the wheel 19 so that it is not necessary to remove the pinion 21.
The pinion 21 meshes with the gear-wheel 22 which carries the pinion 23 which meshes with the gear-wheel 24, which in turn meshes with the gear-wheel 25, which in turn meshes with the gear-wheel 26 carrying the indicator hand 27.
The gear-wheel 26 is mounted on the plate 28 which fits on a seat 29 formed in the plate 80. Below the plate 28 is the interset wheel 31 having a bearing in the stud 30 of the plate 30, turned by the clutch 32 in the ordinary manner during the operation of setting the hand. The screw 33 passes up through the plate 30 the wheel 31, the plate 28 and up into the post 34 on said plate 28. T he gear wheel 26 has the sleeve 35 which fits around the post 3i and the indicator hand is secured to said sleeve. In this way the gear-wheel 26 is placed directly ver the interset wheel without interfering with same and the same screw holds the parts down and clamps them together.
In the operation of winding the watch with my invention applied thereto, the operator turns the winding stem 5 and through it turns the crown wheel 7. The wheel 19 meshing with the main spring barrel 9 remains practically still during the winding operation. The upright teeth 8 of the crown-wheel mesh with the wheel 11 connected with the dust-cap 12 and the sun-gear 13. The teeth of the sun-gear 13 actuate the planet-wheel 17 and as the wheel 19 is held stationary, the wheel 17, meshing with the sun-gear 18, rotates the post 15. This rotation of the post 15 also rotates the pinion 21 and through the intermediate gearing the gear wheel 26 carrying the indicator hand 27, so that said indicator hand is brought back to zero.
When the watch is running the gearwheel 11 and the parts connected thereto, namely, the sun-gear 13 and the dust cap 12, remain stationary because of their connection with crown-wheel 7, and consequently thereverse operation of that described takes place and the indicator hand turns 1 n the opposite direction. The spring-barrel drives gears 19 and 1S integral therewith. The sun-gear 18 drives planet-gear 17 which revolves around the stationary sun-gear 13 and rotates the arbor. bor 15 through the gearing described moves indicator hand.
By having the wheels 13 and 18 flat, as shown, they take up very little space, are cheaper to make, and at the same time serve the purpose of crown wheels by having the wheel 17 meshing therewith in the manner indicated. Furthermore, by mounting the wheel 17 on the pin 16 of the post or arbor 15 a very good support is provided for said wheel and a novel arrangement is afforded for rotating said post.
The dust-cap 1:2 in conjunction with the cup-shaped portion 20 of the wheel 19 provides a closed receptacle for the planetary system of gears and makes them absolutely dust proot, These dust caps further act to hold the wheel 17 in position on the pin 16 without the use of any attaching means.
By having the pinion 21 rigidly attached to the post 15 it makes it unnecessary to remove said pinion, for, as stated before, said pinion does not project beyond the arbor and consequently can be drawn through the opening in the cup-shaped portion 20.
T he arbor l5 acts as a center about which the parts 11 and 19 revolve; it carries the small planetary gear 17 and. finally it carries the pin 16 and pinion 21.
What I claim is:

The combination of a main spring barrel, winding mechanism including a ratchet-wheel, a rotary-post, a gear-wheel encircling said post, a gear-wheel connected to said first named gear-wheel, said first named wheel having a recessed portion to receive said second named gear-wheel, said first named gear-wheel meshing with the main spring barrel, a dust cap forming with said recessed gear-wheel, a casing, a gearwl eel connected to said dust cap and sur rounding said postand within said dust-cap, a planet-gear loosely mounted on said post with its axis at right angles to the axes of said gear-wheels and meshing with said gear-wheels contained within said casing, a gear-wheel outside of said casing and connected thereto, and connections between said last-named gear-wheel and the ratchet-wheel,

The combination of a main spring barrel, winding mechanism including a ratchet-wheel, a rotary post extending through "the watch-plate, a pinion on said post, a gear-wheel encircling said post, connections between said gear-wheel and the main-spring barrel, a second-gear encircling said post, a connection between said last amed gear and the winding mechanism, a planet-gear engaging s; id gears, the pinion on said post being no larger than the opening in said first named gear, an indicator hand, and connections between said pinion and said hand.

The combination of a main spring barrel, winding mechanism including a ratchet-wheel, a rotary-post, a gear-wheel encircling said post, a gear-wheel connected to said first named gear-wheel having a cup- Shaped portion with an opening through which said post extends, a dust-cap forming with said cup-shaped gear-wheel, a casing to contain said first-named gear-wheel, a second gear-wheel contained within said casing, a planet-gear loosely mounted on said post with its axis at right angles to the axes of said gearwheels meshing with said gears in said casing, a gear-wheel outside of said dust-cap and connected thereto, connections between said last named gear-wheel and said "atelier-wheel, a pinion on said post on the portion projecting through said cup-shaped gear-wheel, said pinion being no larger than the diameter of said projecting portion of said post, an indicator hand, and connections between said pinion and said indicator hand.

6. The combination of a main spring barrel, Winding mechanism including a ratchet- Wheel, an inter-set Wheel, a plate over said Wheel engaging a seat in the watch-plate, a post on said first named plate, a gear-Wheel on said plate journaled on said post, an indicator hand connected to said gear-wheel, a screw passing through said plates and up into said post, and connections between said ratchet-Wheel and barrel and said gear- Wheel.
7. The combination of a main-spring barrel, Winding mechanism including a crown-Wheel and a ratchet-Wheel, an indicator hand, reversing mechanism directly geared to said barrel and connecting said indicator-hand, said reversing mechanism having direct gear engagement with said crown-wheel.
