To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn; MAZER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of McAlester, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vinding-Indt caters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a winding indicator for watches, clocks, phonographs and other devices to which it may be applicable, whereby it is possible from a dial to tell not only when the spring is fully wound or when it is run down, but also the extent to which it is wound at any particular moment and the time when it will require rewinding.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism of this character in which bridges or plates for holding the parts together are dispensed with, thereby saving the room which such plates would require and enabling me to place the mechanism 1n a narrow space to reduce the thickness of the watch where used in connection with same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a winding indicator construction which will not in any way interfere with the mechanism of a pendent set watch or even of the lever set watch.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the further disclosure of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a watch showing my winding indicator applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a large diagrammatic view showing the gear-wheel connections; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail of the planetary gearing; Fig. 6 is a detail of the plate for supporting the gear to the indicator hand, and Fig. 7 is a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings I have illustrated my invention in connection with a watch A which is a stem winding Watch of the pendent set type, but for the purposes of description it will not be necessary to re fer to the movement of the watch, which may be of any suitable type. The body of the watch comprises the upper and lower plates B and B. Located in the recess C in the. plate B is the main-spring barrel 0 provided with arbor o to which is attached the spring 0. Secured to the arbor 0 is the ratcl1etwheel it which meshes with the gear wheel J on the shaft J. The shaft J has the bearing in the plate B and secured to the upper end of said shaft is the pinion i which meshes with the gearwheel h secured by the screw h to the plate B. The gear-wheel h meshes with the gear-Wheel g. The gear-wheel g is mounted loosely on the pinion 0 said pinion acting as a bearing for said gear wheel 9. This pinion 0 is secured by the pin 0 to the barrel 0. The mainspring barrel head has a thickened portion which bears against the gear-wheel g and acts as a cap to hold said gear-wheel in place.
The pinion 0 is provided with the teeth 0' which mesh with the teeth 7' of the planet gear F. The planet gear F is secured by the screw f to the wheel 9 and said planet gear has the teeth 6 which mesh with the teeth d of the double pinion D. This pinion D is mounted loosely on the pin (5 which is stepped in the frame B, B. The teeth 0 of the double pinion D mesh with the gear-wheel b which is secured by the screw b to the plate B. The gear-wheel b meshes with the gear-wheel a which carries the indicator-hand o The gear-wheel a is carried by the extension 1" of the plate r. This plate 2* is located to one side of the winding indicator dial and is held by screws 1' to plate B and the extension r extends over into position to receive the gear-wheel a which registers with the indication dial of the winding indicator. The extension r has the flange r which is cut away as at 7'" to expose the teeth of the gear-wheel a. The extension 7- has the stud r upon which the gear-wheel a is mounted. The indicatorhand a is carried directly by the gearwheel a as indicated in Fig. 4.
I will now describe the connections from the winding-stem to the main-spring barrel. The winding-stem s has the bevel pinion s which meshes with the crown-wheel Z. The crown-Wheel Z meshes with the ratchet-wheel k, and the spring 0 being attached to said ratchet through the arbor 0 when the winding mechanism is operated the spring will be wound up in the barrel 0 through the connections just described.
When the watch is unwinding the spring 0' will turn the barrel 0, the ratchet It being gear F and as the gear-wheel g is indirectly held by the ratchet, no rotary moaenrent is imparted to said gear g. The planet-gear F has its teeth (a meshing with the teeth (Z of the double pinion D loosely .inounted upon (5. The teeth 0 oi? the double pinion D mesh with the teeth of the gear-wheel Z- and Z) meshes with 4:, whereby the indicator hand is operated.
When it is desired to wit up the watch and bring the indicator hand back to Zero the operation is as follows:
The winding of the stem sturns the crown wheel. Z and as said crown-wheel meshes with the ratchet 7,; connected to arbor 0, the spring 0 is wound up by the rotation oi said lilU'JllBt-WllQCl. At the seine time the ratchetwheel meshes with the gear-wheel J and in this way rotary motion is im Jar-ted to pinion t'. From the pinion 71 power is trans-- mitted to the gear-wheel It which in turn imparts rotary movement to the gear-wheel g. The gear wheel g being loosely mounted. on the pinion 0 the planetgear i will be carried around by the gear-wheel g and the reverse movement will be imparted to the double pinion D which will operate through the gear-wheel b to reverse the ear-wheel a and bring the indicator hand back to Zero. T he planet gear travels around he pinion 0 which remains stationary.
One of the chiet advantages of the above arrangement is that it requires but one recess E on that side in the plate B in which recess is located the gear-wheel g/ and all the other wheels necessary for the reversing motion. Furthermore the gear-wheel g has a recessed portion g which forms a space to receive the planet-gear, and the lower toothed face of double pinion D. The face of said gear-wheel is close up to the inner face oi the recess E, so as to form a practically dust proof arrangement, as the face of the gear-wheel forms the dust-cap on one side and the inner face of the recess E the other cap.
By having the thickened portion 0 on the main-spring barrel, it is unnecessary to have any retaining plates, thereby saving the room which such plates would require and. making it possible to put the mechanism in a narrower space. Furthermore, but four planes are required for the entire mechanism, while ordinarily not less than six or seven planes were required to provide for the mechanism, thereby greatly increasing the amount of space required.
By the employment of the support 7* and extension plate 9" I am enabled to locate the winding indicator dial in line with the second hand of the watch, and that too without interfering in any way with the mechanism or the pendentset watch. Heretofore it has been practically impossible to mount a wind.-

1. ln a watch or the like, the combination of he main-spring barrel, of winding mechan. 1 including a ratchet wheel, a pinion carried by said barrel, a recessed gear-wheel loosely mounted on said pinion, connections between said gear wheel and said ratchet wheel, reversing mechanism carried by said gear-wheel and engaged by said pinion, said reversing mechanism being contained within the space formed by said recessed wheel and the inner face of the watch-plate.

In a watch or the like, the combination with the main-spring barrel, of winding mechanism including a ratchet wheel, a pinion carried by said barrel, a recessed gearwheei, said pinion extending up through said gear-wheel and forming a bearing therefor, means for spacing said gearwheel from said spring-barrel, connections between said gear wheel and ratchet wheel, reversing mechanism carried by said gear-wheel in the space between the gear-wheel and the inner face of a recess formed in the watch-plate, said reversing mechanism being engaged by said pinion.
5. In a watch or the like, the combination of the main-spring barrel, of winding mechof the main-spring barrel, of winding mechanism, including a ratchet-wheel attached to the spring of said barrel, a gear-wheel, connections between said gear-wheel and said ratchet-wheel, a pinion on said main-spring barrel extendin up through said gear-wheel and forming a caring on which said gearwheel is loosely mounted, a planetear carried by said gear-wheel and engage by said pinion, a double pinion in line with said first pinion engaged by said planet-gear, and connections between said double pinion and said winding indicator hand.
7 In a watch or the like, the combination of the main-spring barrel, of winding mechanism, a winding indicator hand, a pinion carried by said barrel, a gear-wheel through which said pinion extends to form a bearing for said gear-wheel, an enlarged portion on said barrel which bears against said gearwheel, connections between said pinion and said indicator hand, and connections between said gear-wheel and said hand in winding to bring said hand back to zero.
