LUIZ PAULO ZEYMER, F RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR GUNS.
,To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lurz PAULO ZEYMER,
a citizen of Brazil, residing at 83 Rua Buenos Aires, Riode J aneiro, Brazil, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
It happens very frequently in hunting that the hammer of a gun is caught by the branch, of a tree or by the clothing of the hunter and is raised and released quite suddenly, with the result that the gun is accidentally discharged wounding or even killposed to be transparent;
Fig, 2 is a lateral view, in the opposite direction, of the lock plate bearing the mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tumbler;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the safety bar and lever which ,operatesit;
Fig. 5 is a lateral view analogous to 1, of a modified form of the invention to adapt it to the French system of lock;
Fig. 6 is a lateral view, in the opposite direction, of the lock plate bearing the mechanism;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the tumbler; and
Fig. 8 is, also a perspective view of the safety cam and lever operating it.
When the hammer 1 is brought back to cocked position the tumbler 2 revolves till the indentation 3 is caught by the end of sear 4 and held by it in that position. The gun is now cocked, and to discharge it the trigger, which is shown as made up of two parts 5 and 6 but which may be made in one piece, must be pulled, part 5 acting on sear 4 and releasing it from the tumb er 9 and consequently the hammer; and part 6 acting on lever 7 which, through a pin 8, engaging a cam slot in the safety bar 9, pushes said bar forward thus allowing the projection 10 of thetumbler to go down past the level of the upper side of the bar, the ham Fig.

mer then striking the firing pin. As soon as the trigger is released the safety bar 9, acted on by spiral spring 11, comes back to the initial position;
It is thus easily seen that the hammer 1 may be raised and released without striking the firing pin, unless the trigger is pulled, because the projection 10 of the tumbler will strike the upper face 12 of the safety bar and be stopped by it before the hammer strikes the firing pin; and the safety bar can be pushed out of the way only through operation of the trigger.
In the modified form, Figs. 5 to 8, as the French lock does not permit the use of the safety bar, a cam 13 is used acted on by a lever 7 and a springl-i to bring it back to initial position, the form of the tumbler being also slightly modified in that part of it which engages the cam. The fulcrum of lever 7 is placed some distance to the rear of the fulcrum of lever 4 to magnify its action on cam 13. T heway the device operates is the same as that above described for the English lock, the cam preventing the projection 10 of the tumbler from going lower than the level of its upper face unless the trigger is pulled, pushing the cam out of the way through the operation of lever 7. Unless this is done the hammer will not strike the firing pin and the gun cannot be discharged.
It is to be understod that the shape or arrangement of the various parts may be modified without departing from the invention. For instance, in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 a flat spring 15 is shown under lever 7, which may or may not be used, as its object is simply to aid spiral spring 11 in raising lever 7 to the initial position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gun, in combination, a hammer adapted to operate a firing pin, a tumbler movable with said hammer, aprojection on tally so as to loring its said iipner V faeenutof the path of saidprejection,htriggeroperated means for releasing the hammer, and a "criggerfor actuating said lever.
