ASSIGNOB OF ONE-THIRD 'ro WILLIAM L.

Patenten Feb. i2, wie.,
Application tiled February 8, 1917. Serial No. 147,481.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Nacen, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinoishave invented certain new and useful Improvemnts in the Methods of Removing Oils, Fats, and Greases from Cloths, and Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the'operation of removing or extracting oils, fats or greases from cloth, or similar material, recovering the extracted matter and cleansing the cloths.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and economical method for accomplishing this operation.
A further object is to provide an improved apparatus for the extraction of oils, fats or greases from materials containing such substances, and more particularly to provide an apparatus suitabie for carrying out the 4method of removing these substances from cloths for the purpose of recovering the oil or fatty matter and cleansing` the cloths.
It has been the custom in the manufacture ofP oleomargarin to wash the press cloths for the purpose of recovering the fatty matters with which they have become permeated, the fat recovered being used again in the manufacture of the oleomargarin product. It has been the usual practice to boil the cloths in distilled water (distilled water being used for sanitarv reasons) and skim 0E the fats as they rise of the water. It is necessary, ordinarily. to subject the cloths to several such boiling operations. In the last operation caustic soda is nut into the water so as to cleanse the cloths, the butterine fats washed out in this operation being, therefore, wasted. This washing operation is expensive an tedious and the vats used take up considerable space. fter the cloths have been washed they are hung out to dry and this requires additional space in the factory besides involving time andlabor. My invention provides a radically different method for recovering fatty matter and cleansing the cloths. This method has the advantage of economy and the recovery of practically to the surface l all of the fatty matter, and can he carried` out by a simple, inexpensive and compact apparatus.
The process, as will be understood, is not limited 1.o the treatment of ole'omargarin press cloths but might be employed for the treatment of` any cloths, rags or similar material (the word cloths being used nerically in this connection) which are saturated with any oil, fat or grease.
The improved method will be described in connection with the accompanying mg which shows, in vertical sectional eleva.- tlon, an improved form of extracting apparatus suitablefor the purpose. v
Referring to the drawing, 1 supported on a suitable stand revoluble container arranged within the cas ing 1 and supported on a shaft 4 having a. pulley 5 by means of which the shaft may be driven by a belt (not shown). The casis a. casing AND APPARATUS.
drawing is provided with a discharge opening 6 75 from which a pipe 7 leads to a vessel 8 adapted to receive the oil, fat or grease recovered from the extracting process. The side wall of the container 3 is formed with perforations 9. The top of the container is open, as indicated at 10, and the casing 1 is provided with a corresponding opening closed during the operation f the machine by a cover 11. In the annular space 12, between casing 1 and the container 3, is arranged a steam coil 13 formed with perforations 14 arranged to direct jets of steam against the side wall of the container. Steam is supplied to the coil by a pipe 15 which extends through the discharge opening 6.
The cloths, or other like material, are placed in the container 3 and the container is revolved at relatively high speed. At the same time steam is introduced into casing the steam is to produce a comsidered as limited lto llt will he understood that., so far as the method is concerned, it is not to be conthe particular type of apparatus shown` and described. So far as concerns the apparatus, it might be modified in certain unessential respects Without departure from the invention expressed in the claims.
ll claim:
.1. rlhe method of removing oils, fats or greases from cloths which consists in subjecting the cloths to centrifugal `force( against a retaining element and at the same incense time applying j'ets of steam to the opposite side of said elemenjtl *32. Extracting revoluigle container having perforations in its sidewall, an inciosing easing' for the container having a discharge outlet a steam coil in the casing surrounding` the container having perfor-ations to direct jets of steam; against the side wail of the container, and a supply connection enonen W. NAGEL.
for the steam coil extending through sald discharge outlet.
