Description

WILLIAM N. MARTIN.
Improvement in Binder for Sewing Machines.
N0. 05,590. Patented AprII9,I872.
Fig. 2.
I x II 71 6572 6.98 as fnwizmn. jww/wi yew UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM NELSON MARTIN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT-IN BINDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,590, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, WM. NELSON MARTIN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Attachments for Sewing.
Fig. I I is a sectional view through the line was.
Figs. III, IV, and V are views of the spring K and curved plate 6. Fig. VI is a view of the braid or galloon-carrier.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved adjustable binder attachment for sewing-machines, adjustable to the dilferent machines now in use, and as an improvement on my patent dated May 15, 1870, reissued May 9, 1871. It consists in a circular slotted plate, which revolves, and allows a ready adjustment at any point within the circle formed by the slot as its radius. It also consists in anovel-shaped spring for holding the curved plate 0 in position; also in a novel arrangement of the braid or galicon-holder.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
A is a bed-plate, having a circular opening and shoulder, t'. Within this circular opening 1 tit a circular plate, B. having in it a slot,- 0, and shoulder, i, and which rotates freely within the opening in the plate A, the shoulder z" fitting on the shoulder 2'. Through theslot 0 passes the thumb-screw holding the binder to the machine, by which it is evident the binder may be adjusted to any machine whose thumbscrew hole comes within the circle traversed by the slot 0. When the plate B is adjusted within the plateA as desired, it may be held in position when not in use by the screw N andbraid-holder M. K is a spring attached to the curved plate 6, and bearing upon the opposite sides of the standard L of the guide-plate. This spring holds the curved plate ein proper position, and it moves up and down with the arm D, and is adjusted with the arm 0 by means of the adjusting-screw G. M is a braid or galloon-carrier, attached to 'the bed-plate A by the screw N, and is of the peculiar shape shown in Fig. VI.
I am aware that sewing-machine attachments have been rendered adj ustable-by means of slots moving in straight lines, as is shown in the patent of E. Bostock, dated July 28, 1868. I therefore do not claim, broadly, an adjustable plate for sewing machine attachments; but-- What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. I claim the spring K, constructed as described, in combination with the curved plate 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a binding attachment having the spring and curved plate, as specified, I claim the revolving slotted plate B and bed-plate A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
