To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BRYDGES, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Check- Protectors, of which the following is a specication. This invention relates tov a check stamp designed to indelibly mark a check or the like with the exact value in dollars that it is drawn for, as a protection against its value being raised. Many devices are at present in use for marking checks in this manner for their protection, but the great majority of these are not satisfactory in. that they do not mark the check with the exact dollar value for which the check is drawn, but with a round number in excess of that; or, if designed to mark the full dollar value, they are toorcomplicated and too cumbersome for general adoption. j
The appliance which is the subject of this application, will not only press the paper of the check with the exact value in dollars and simultaneously ink the impression so that the ink penetrates the ruptured tissue of the paper and renders the mark indelible, but is suiiiciently simple and compact in its mechanism that it can, when desired, be
adapted to be carried within a check-boo for pocket use.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, referenceI being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which: y Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2 showing the presser bar lever in the raised position and in dot and dash lines as applied to impress a check.

Y The device comprises a rectangular shallow bordered plate 2 of thin `sheet metal, which plate is lengthwise divided into .a series of grooves 3 by thin partitions 4 secured to and upwardly projecting from the plate 2. These partitions 4 are interrupted at 20 adjacent their midlength to receive, when the same is folded down out of use, a presser bar 5 secured across the free end of a presser lever 6 hinged at 7 to the frame plate 2.
. l/Vithin each groove 3 is endwise movable a type bar 8. The end of each bar is eX- tended beyond the presser bar location 20 and has a finger' engagement 9 which projects upwardly through a slot 10 in a cover plate 11 which extends across that half of the frame opposite that to which the presser lever 6 is hinged and is secured to the edge border of the plate in any convenient manner.
rThe upper face of each bar has in relief numeral type from 1 to 0 consecutively arranged from adjacent the finger engaging end backward. The relief faces of these type are deeply grooved lengthwise of the bar and the contacting face of the presser bar 5 is correspondingly grooved with acute angled V notches. Each type bar adjacent the finger engagement has a resilient detent 12 secured to it which is designed to engage one of a series of notches 13 extending across the bottom of its groove 3 and definitely locate the type in correct alinement with one another under the presser bar 5.
Across that section of the grooves 3 wherein the type bars are normally located, that is, at the end under the presser lever 6, a cover plate 14 is connected, the underside of which cover plate has an absorbent material, such as felt, cemented to it to form an inking pad 15. lThis cover plate 14 is supported on light springs 16 secured to the bottom of the frame 2 on each side, which springs engage lugs 17 projecting from the sides of the cover, and is retained in contact with these springs by portions 18 which are split from the springs 16 and turned upward and apertured to receive the lugs 17.
The inking pad 15 of this cover 14 is thereby held clear of the type except when the presser lever 6 is folded down when light springs 19 secured on each side of the presser lever engage the upper side of the lugs 17' and press the inking pad into contact. The lug apertures of 18 are such as will permit this downward inking movement.

A check protecting stamp, comprising in combination a. base plate lengthwise divided by partitions secured to and upwardly projecting Jfrom it to form a series of type bar grooves which partitions are interrupted adjacent the midlength of the frame, a lever frame hinged to the sides of the base plate adjacent one end, said lever having a presser bar secured across it at a position corresponding to the interruption of the lengthwise partitions of the plate, the face of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each,
