IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR COATING ROOFING-FELT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,517, dated April 9, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, J OHN H. BARKER, of Washington, in the county of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Coating Felt for Roofing, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in a slatted endless apron for carrying the felt, in combination with a feed-hopper or its equivalent to supply the coating material to the felt as the latter passes through the machine, and also in other devices or arrangements.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my machine. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Upon any suitable frame, A, is placed a slatted endless apron, B, carried by two or more rollers, I), as seen in Fig. 1. One of these rollers may be set in motion by a crank, E, Fig. or power may be applied in any other suitable manner. A hopper, F, is supplied with suitable went, which is fed through upon felt which is carried forward under thehopper by means of slatted apron; also, I have a sand box or boxes, G, for covering the cement with sand and thus completing the coating. Both the cement-hopper and the sand-box maybe provided with screens of woven wire, as seen in Fig. 2 at H, and, if desired, the sand-screen may be shaken automatically, so as to move and stop with the endless apron; or the sand-box may have an adjustable gate, to regulate the flow of sand In'order to regulate the thickness of the coat of cement the slatted apron may be adjusted at a proper distance from the bottom of the hopper F by means of the le' vers I, which are pivoted at the lower end, so as to swing up or down, and thus direct the endless belt, which rides over the upper ends of these levers. These levers are raised and lowered by means of the eccentric or crankrod K, or by other suitable means. One or more rollers or a drum may be substituted for the levers I and placed under the apron at the mouth of the hopper, such drum being adjustable vertically to regulate the thickness of the cement coating. This drum, or the levers, will also serve to close the hopper and cut off the flow of cement whenever the machine stops.
It may be observed that the slatted endless apron is both a carrier for the felt, and also serves as a spreader in connection with the bottom of the box or hopper.
If the sliding friction upon levers I is objectionable, the drum above mentioned will remedy that objection, as well as to gauge the thickness of the coating of cement; and the levers or the drum may serve to tighten the apron, if desired. In case a long apron be employed, several rollers or strips may be used, if necessary, to prevent the same from sagging; also, a roller may be placed on the upper ends of the levers I, if desired; but I prefer the above-described arrangement.
My slatted apron being made chiefly of wood, (the slats being attached to narrow belts or chains,) if the cement gets on these slats it is easily cleaned off, without doing any serious injury, as would be the case where a cloth or other similar stuff is used to form the apron without the slats.
It may be mentioned that the machine may be used, with proper care, without any gate for regulating the feed, or the levers I for adjusting the apron.
The sieve in the cement-hopper should be placed some distance from the bottom of the hopper in order to give sufficient breadth of sieve to allow the necessary quantity of cement to .pass, and thus screen out all the lumps, which might prevent the proper coating of the felt.
My machine may be used for any purpose similar to coating felt, as above described.
I do not broadly claim a slatted apron, but I believe such apron has never before been used in combination with a cement-hopper for coating felt for roofing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A slatted endless apron, in combination with a cement-hopper, or its equivalent, for coating felt or other similarmaterial for roofin g or other purposes, substantially as set forth.
2. I also claim the slatted apron in combination with the adjusting; levers I, or their equivalents, substantially as described.
3. Ialso claim the sieve H, in combination with the feed-hopper, for removing the lumps from the cement or coating material F, substantially as set" forth.
