Be it known that I, ARRYR. VAN VENTER, a citizen of the United States, re-' siding at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements n Ignition Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had, to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to an ignition device for internal combustion engines, and more particularly to an ignition device 111- cluding electrodes, a magneto generator electrically connected thereto, and a tripped spring actuated mechanism for operating said generator. v
An object of the invention is to prov1de an ignition device of the above character with a two part supporting bracket, the generator being mounted on one of the said parts and the electrodes being mounted on the other pant.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a two part supporting bracket of the above character, wherein the trip lever for actuating the springs which operates the generator is mounted on the part of the supporting-bracket carrylng the electrodes.
A still further ob ect of the invention is to provide a two; part supporting bracket of theabbve'charter with means for independently attaching and supportmg the bracket parts.
Another object of the invention is. to provide atwo-part supporting bracket, Wherein theadjacent faces are formed Withinterlocking connections so that the parts of the bracket. are held in a predetermined relation to each other.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

make-and -break My invention consists broadly .in an ignition device which includes a two-part supporting bracket. ()ne of the parts of the bracket carries the ignition electrodes, while the "other part of the bracket carries the magneto generator. The generator is electrically connected to the electrodes. One of the electrodes is preferably movable for a ignition. The movable electrode and the flux shifting member of the generator are operated by a tripped spring actuating mechanism, and the trip lever of the spring actuating mechanism is mounted on the part of the bracket carrying the movable electrode. This trip lever is operated by the well known push-rod carrying a trip finger. The thrust ofthe pushrod against the tripper lever is borne by the part of the bracket supporting the electrodes and therefore there is no tem'lency onvthe part of the push-rod, when actuating the tripping'lever, to wear loose the section ,of the bracket carrying the generator. The

The projecting sleeve 3, is preferably formed integrally with the part 2 of the supporting bracket. Mounted in this sleeve is a fixed electrode 4, and a movable electrode -5. These electrodes are providedwith ignition points 6 and 7, respectively. The :electrodc 4 is properly insulated from the sleeve 3. The movable electrode at its outer end carries an arm- 8. A spring 9, hearing at one end against the arm 8 and at its other end' against an abutment 10, on the bracket 2, normally holds the ignition points in contact.

The upper end of the bracket part 1, is slotted at 15, to receive the upper stud bolt, while the lower part of the bracket is perforated to receive the stud bolt 14. The generator which is indicated at G, is mounted on the shelf and is held thereon by bolts 18, which extend up through openings in the shelf and are threaded into the base of the generator.
As will be apparent'from Fig. 2, of the drawings, the supporting bracket is directed vertically to form the parts 1, and 2, and the adjacent faces are milled so as to form smooth contact faces. One of these faces is formed with recesses 19, while the other corresponding shaped projections cesses and hold the two parts of-the bracket in a predetermined relation to each other.
The generator and the movable electrode are operated by a spring actuated tripped mechanism consisting of a trip lever 21 mounted on a suitable supporting shaft 22, which is fixed to the part 2, of the supporting bracket. This tripping lever is provided with pins 23 and 24. An actuating spring 25 engages a roller 26, on the pin 23,,
and also engages a roller 80, on a pin 31, carried by the upper end of the bracket part 2. An actuating spring 32 engages a roller 33, on the pin 24 and also a roller 34 carried by the projecting lug 35, mounted on part 11, adjacent the shelf 17, which supports the generator. These actuating springs normally move into alinement.
The tripping lever is formed with a shoulder 36; which is adapted to be engaged by a trip finger 37, carried by the push-rod which is operated by the engine. As the trip fin- 2, it will move the trip lever in a clockwise tion until a certain position or point is reached when the trip finger slips from the shoulder and allows the springs to return said trip lever to normal position. Then again, as all the strain is carried by part 2 of the supporting bracket, it may be made of cast metal of heavy construction, whilepart of the SUIT-1", porting. bracket may be made of stamped metal, and thus the cost of manufacturing the supporting bracket greatly reduced. It is obvious that nrinor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the partsmay be made without departing from. the spirit ofthe invention as set forth in the appended claims:

An ignition device comprising a twopart supporting bracket, means for independently supporting the parts of the bracket on the cylinder wall of the engine, ignition electrodes carried by one part of said bracket and a generator carried by the other part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes.
3. An ignition device comprising a two part bracket, means for independently supporting the parts of the bracket on the cylinder Wall of the engine, a fixed and a movable electrode carried by one part of said 110 bracket, and a generator carried by the I other part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes.
4. An ignition device comprising a twopart supporting bracket, means for inde-"l15 pendently supporting the parts of, the bracket on the cylinder wall of the engine, ignition electrodes carried by one part of said bracket and a generator carried by the other part of said bracket and electrically 120 connected to said electrodes, and an interlocking connection between the bracket parts whereby the same may be held in a predetermined relation to each other..

An ignition device comprising a two- 125 part bracket, means for independently supporting the parts'of the bracket on the cyllnder wall'of the engine, a fixed and a mov able electrode carried by one part of said bracket, and a generator carried by the its other. part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes, and an interlocking connection between the bracket parts whereby the same may be held in a predetermined relation to each other.
6. An ignition device comprising a twopart bracket, means for independently suporting the parts of the bracket on the cylinder wall of the engine, a fixed and a movable electrode carried by one part of said bracket, and a generator carried by the other part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes, and a trip lever carried by said bracket part supporting the electrodes for operating the movable electrode and for actuating the generator.

An ignition device comprising a supporting bracket, said-bracket being divided vertically, electrodes carried by one part of said bracket and a generator'carried by the other part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes, the adjacent faces of ethe parts of the bracket having interlocking members for holding the same in a predetermined relation to each other.
10. An ignition device comprising a supporting bracket, said bracket being divided vertically, electrodes carried by one part of said bracket and a generator carried b the other part of said bracket and electrically connected to said electrodes, and means for recesses for determining the vertical posi-' tions of the parts relative to each other.
