DRUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1918.
Appiicauon ined December 5, 1913. serial no. 504,896.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, TOM lVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums, of which the following is a specification.v
The principal object of my invention is to provide a new. and improved adjustable drum. One feature of my invention relates to making the hoops of a drum independently adjustable with respect to the shell for the purpose of determining the tension of the heads, and making the adjustment for both hoops accesible at one side ofthe drum. Another feature relates to providing means for preventing the drum from warping out. of its true original shape. All these objects and features of my improved invention. and other objects and features thereof, will be made apparent in the following specification and claims taken with the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated one specific embodiment of my invention. It will be understood that the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of a drum embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2 2 of Eig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is an axial section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In these drawings I have illustrated one specific form in which my invention may be embodied, and I now proceed to describe the same.
The drum shell 11 has the two hoops 12 and 13 securing the respective beater head 14 and snare head 15. Across the snare head lie snares 16. The ring 17 extends around the shell and is secured thereto, thereby lending rigidity to the drum construction and preventing warping of the drum from its original circular or other cross section. This ring has equally spaced proiections 18, through which are holes parallel with the axis of the drum. Attached to the hoop 12 around the beater head are studs 10 secured by screws 20. Each stud 19 carries an internally screw-threaded sleeve 21, which is engaged by the screw 23 on the end of the stem 22. Each stem 22 is a little larger' than the screw 23, so as to provide a shoulder 24 that engages the projections 18 on the ring 17. Each stem 22 carries a transverse plate which with the end of the stern forms a` finger-hold 25, by which it may be rotated.
The hoop 13 around the snare head has a series of studs 26 with holes therethrough, the axes of these holes being parallel to the axis of the drum. T he studs 2G are secured by the screws 27. Through the holes in the studs 2G pass the screws 32, which engage the internally screw-threaded sleeves 30 on the members 2S. These members have heads 29 that engage the projections 18 on the ring 17. The screws 32 are carried by the members 31 which have transverse plates secured thereto to form with the extremities of the members 31 the finger-holds 33, and these members act as shoulders to engage the studs 26.
It will be observed on referring to Figs. 1 and 3 that the members 31 are of greater diameter than the stems 22, so that the finger-holds 25 and 33 can be distinguished by feeling as well as by inspection.
T he beater head of the drum can have its tension adjusted by means of the fingerholds 25, and the snare head can have its tension adjusted by means of the fingerholds 33. These two sets of finger-holds are arranged alternately around the snare head and are accessible alike. lVhen either head is being adjusted. appropriate finger holds therefor can readily beidentiiied by feeling the stems on which they are mounted, as well as by inspection.
It will be seen that I have provided a drum in which the heads can be adjusted independently of one another, but relatively to the shell, and yet both adjustments can be made by finger-holds that are accessible adjacent to one head of the drum.
I claim l l. In a drum. a shell, a member fixed on said shell, a pair of hoops, and two independent sets of adjusting mechanism for adjusting said hoops independently of each other relatively to said shell, said sets of mechanism eachbeingl connected to one of said hoops and to said member fixed on said shell.
2. In a drum, a shell, hoops, a ring extending around and secured to the shell, and screws all engaging said ring and part of i pendent sets of adjusting mechanisms for adjusting said hoops independently ot each Vother relatively to the shell, said sets of mechanism each being` connected to OnemfV said hoops and to said member fixed on the shell, said sets of mechanism also comprising operating members located adjacent one head of said drum.
4l. In a drum, a shell, hoops, a ring extendingv around and secured to the shell, screws alll engaging said ring and part of them engaging one hoop and others engaging the other hoop, and handles to operate said screws all arranged adjacent to one head of the drum. v
y5. In a drum, a shell, hoops, a ring eX- tending around and secured to the shell, screws all engaging Vsaid ring and engaging said hoops alternately.
6. In a drinn, a shell, hoops, a ring eX- tending around and secured to the shell, screws all engaging said ring and engaging said hoops alternately, all of said screws carrying linger-holds adjacent to one head of the drum. y
7. In a drum, a shell, hoops, a ring eX tending around and secured to the shell, screws all engaging said ring and engaging said hoops alternately, all of said screws carrying finger-holds adjacent to one head of the drum, said linger-holds being alike for each set but diiering between the two sets, whereby they may readily be distinguished.
8. In a drum, a shell, a pair of hoops, a ring extending around and secured to said shell, a plurality of threaded sleeves Secured to one of said hoops, a plurality 0I Voperating members having shoulders en- Capies of this patent may be obtained for gaging said ring and screws extending through said'ring and engaging said sleeves, a second set of threaded sleeves carried by said ring, and a second set of operating members engaging the other of said hoops and having` threaded portions engaging said last-mentioned threaded sleeves.
9. In a drum, a shell, a member fixed on said shell, a pair of hoops, and two independent sets of adjusting' mechanism for adj usting said hoops relatively to said shell, said sets of mechanism each comprising a plurality or' independently adjustable devices locatel around the periphery of said drum,the devices vof one set ol' mechanism being arranged to alternate with those of the' othervset of mechanism, said sets oi mechanism each being'connected to one ol said hoops and to said member xed on said shell, 'whereby said hoopsinay be adjusted independently of each other. A
l0. In a drum, a shell, a member iiXed on said shell, a pair of hoops, and two independent sets ot adjusting mechanism for adjusting' said hoops relatively to said shell, said sets oi mechanism each being connected to one of said hoops and to said member fixed on said shell, each of said sets Vof mechanism comprising a plurality of adjustable de' vices distributed around the periphery of said shell and having operating members located adjacent one head of said drum, the adjustable devices of one set or mechanism being'located to alternato with the adjustable devices or' the other set of mechanism.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
