The relay RR closes at its front contact a circuit from battery through restoring magnet RM, bottom spring of oil1- normal spring ON to ground. The magnet RM thereupon becomes energizedand pulls up its armature 121, allowing barb 122 to catch pin 119 and hold it throughout the conversation. At the end of the convcrsation, when the subscriber hangs up, vhe breaks at his switchhool the circuit holding up relay RR, which thereupon allows its armature to fall back. The armature opens at its front contactthe circuit of the magnet RM, which then denergizes. When armature 121 falls back, it does not catch the pin 120, but allows it toslide over the lower face of barb 122, and spring 130 forces the drum 127, with its stop 212, into engagement with- .the catch 126. which is constantly rotating, begins to wind the wire 1.12 on drum 127. When-block 125 reaches arm 116, it lifts the carriage 113 back to normal position. Just before normal position is reached, the arm 115 forces back bell crank 11,7 so that armature. 121 will engage pin 120. At its upper end, bell crank 117 `moves the drum 127 away from the catch 126,y whereupon springs 131 cause the drum 129 to wind back the wire 112,
and the switch is ready -for the next call. s
lf a second call comes in while the first switch is in use, a circuit will be closed from battery, contact springs v107, ofl`-normal spring N, springs 128, oii'-normal spring N2, starting magnet o1' the next switch SM2 to ground. The energization of mag net SM., will cause a connection to be completed in the same manner as has been previously described for the first switch. y
It is to benoted that contact springs 107 remain closed during the fall of the carriage :113, so that, to prevent the-starting of another switch` the starting circuit is broken at spring 128. In order that these springs shall remain open durin the fall of the carringe, starting magnet M is made slow to release, 'and will hold its armature up until 'the calling line has been seized.
lfVhat is claimed is:
1. In an automatic switch,V a gravity operated carriage, an arm on said carriage, stop members normally positioned out o1 the path ofmovement of said carriage arm, means for moving a selected' stop member into the path or' movement of said arm, and means controlled by the engagement; of an arm with the selected stop member for moving said stop member out of the path of movement of arms on subsequently operated carriages.
2. In an automatic switch, a gravity operated carriage, an arm on said carriage, stop members normally positioned .out of the path of movement oi" said carriage arm, electromagnetic means for moving a selected stop member into the path of movement ot said arm and holding it in said path, and. means controlled by the engagement of an arm with a selected stop member for moving said stop member out of the path of movement of arms on subsequently operated. carriages and stopping the carriage whose arm is engaged, said electromagnetic means serv'ijg to dissipate the momentum of said falling carriage. l,
3. In an automatic switch, movable rods in which subscriberslines terminate, a rod 1 being associated with each line, gravity operated carriages in which trunk' lines terminate,vsaid carriages being adapted when released to traverse and malte Contact with said rods, means operated on the initiation til] of a call for positioning a subscribes rod in the path of any carriage which may fall, and means actuated upon the operation of said means for releasing a carriage` 1. ln an automatic switch, movable rods and fixed terminal strips in which subscribers lines terminate, a rod and a strip being associated with each line, gravity operated carriages in which trunk lines terminate, each carriage being provided with means for connecting a selected rod and strip yto the trunk line with which Said carriageis associated, means for holding each carriage in normal position when its asso?y veiated trunk line is idle, said means oper-4 ating to prevent the fall of any other car-- riage during the fall of its associated carriage, means lfor moving a subscribers rod into selectable position upon the initiation of a call, and means operated upon the actuation of said rod-moving means for renden ing inefl'ective the holding means of a caryriage associated with an idle trunk.
