WILLIAM L. BUTCHER, OF BRINGHURST, INDIAA.
FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan., 29, ille.'
Application led September 15, 1917. Serial No. 191,558.
i' To all fao/0m it may concern:
Be it known.l that I, l/VILLIAM L. BU'rcI-inn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bringhurst, inthe county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fences, of which the following is aV specification.
This invent-ion relates to wire fences and has special reference to a protector for such fences which will eifectually prevent animals from jumping a fence and passing from one field to another.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement whereby a protector wire may be carried in a position projecting laterally from the top portion of a fence, the device being arranged to be shifted from one side of the fence to the other at will.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a simple and economical device of this character which may be applied to any existing post and wire or post and rail fence.
l/Vith the above and other objects in View, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts inthe several views, and
lligure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wire fence constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse view through such a fence showing the device applied to the top of a fence post, the wires being omitted.
Fig, 3 is a detail section, partly broken away, the section being taken transversely of the supporting arm and bracket for the guard wire.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there has been disclosed a wire fence including posts lO and line wires 11. Above the upper line wire 11 there is secured to each post a channel member 12 which projects equally on opposite sides of the fence and is provided with a central bolt 13 which passes through both sides of the channel and constitutes a pivot boltA for a swinging arm le. The channel cut away centrally as at 15 to permit swinging of the end of this arm and is furthermore braced against tilting by suitable braces 16, The arm la is provided at its free end with a. notch 17 so that the free end may be said to be forked, each arm of the fork having a tie-wire opening 1S. Located in the notches 17 is a guard wire 19 which extends parallel to the line wires and is held in the notches by means of tie wires 20. Moreover, adjacent the ends of the brackets 12 are openings 21 and in connection with these openings there is provided a suitable opening in the arm 1d which may be brought into registry with the opening 21 at either end of the respective bracket, a bolt 22 being passed through the registering openings to lock the respective arm 14: in position.
Now we will suppose that the fence is located between two fields, one of which is used for pasture and the other of which has been planted with a crop. The arms la, in these circumstances, are so turned as to cause the guard wire to project into the pasture field. When animals at pasture attempt to jump the fence they will naturally approach close to the fence and will then throw their heads up before jumping thus striking the guard wire and preventing them from j umping. It will also be obvious that such a construction of fence may be used in surrounding munition works since the laterally projecting position of the guard wire renders it practically impossible to clamp such a` fence. lt is to be noted that it is usual for a field which is used one year for a crop to be used the next year for pasturage and vice versa so that during one season the arms le may be projected on one side of the fence while during the following season by simply removing the bolts 22 the entire row or line of arms and the guard wire may be thrown from one side of the fence to the other.
There has thus been provided a simple and etlicient device of the kind described and for the purpose speciiied.
It is obvious that many min-or changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is z 1. In a device of the kind described, a
ll l) bracket adapted to. be secured to a fence post, a swinging arm pivoted at one end to said bracket and arranged toswing from one end of the bracket to the other, said arm being arranged to receive a guard Wire in its extremity, and releasable means to hold the arm in adjusted position relative to said bracket.
2. In a device of the kind described, the
combinationvwith a fence post, of a chan-V nell member secured to said post and eX- tending transversely of the fence on opposite sides thereof, a swingingarm having one end pivoted Within said channel member at the center thereof, said arm being provided with a bolt receiving opening spaced from its-pivot point and having its free end arranged to receive and retain a guard wire, said bracket haif'ing openings through its sides Wherewith the opening in the arm is arranged to be brought into registry, a bolt removably passed through certain of the openings in the bracket and the opening in the arm, and .a guard Wire held in the outer end of said arm.
In testimony whereof l aliix my signature.
