Be it known that I, HERBERT Sromrs FIT-z- GERALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarrytown, in the county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hook and Eye; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hook and eye fasteners, and has for its object to provide a hook which embodies novel features of construction whereby the edge portion of the garment or other member to which it is Secured will be prevented from turning back and gaping in an objectionable manner.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a fastener of this character which i comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be formed from a single length of wire, which can be readily stitched or otherwise secured to a garment or like member, and which is not liable to become accidentally released or unfastened when in use.

With these and other objects in view. the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hook constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the hook member.

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a conventional form of eve which may be used in connection with the hook member.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings. which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the reference character A designates a flat elongated base, and B a hook member which springs from an intermediate portion of the base and extends over the base in cooperative relation thereto, said hook member being adapted to engage a conventional eye C, such as that illustrated by Fig. 4. The hook fastener is preferably formed from a single length of wire. the base A being shown as including a middle strand 1, and side strands 2 and 3. These several strands of wire have a parallel relation to each other, and the middle strand 1 extends substantially the full length of the base, while the side strands 2 and 3 extend from an intermediate point inthe base to opposite ends thereof. The hook member B springs from this intermediate point in the base and includes spaced sides which are formed by returning the side strand 2 and deflecting the opposite side strand 3 upwardly. The nose of the hook member is deflected downwardly toward the base. as indicated at 4, the end of the hook member being looped at 5. The strands 1 and 3 ofthe base extend away from the mouth of the hook member and terminate in an integral eye 6, while the strands 1 and 2 extend in the opposite direction and have the free ends thereof curved outwardly in the plane of the base to provide the usual eye 7. The portion of the middle strand 1 under the overhanging portion of the book may be crimped upwardly at 8 to provide a hump for preventing accidental disengagement of the eye C from the hook when the fastener is in use. The hook fastener may be secured tothe outer overlapping edge of the crimp or like member by means of suitable stitching ongaging the eyes 6 and 7. and the eye 6 which extends away from the base of the hook member will be positioned at the free outer edge of the garment. thereby preventing this outer edge from turning outwardly 0r gaping in an objectionable manner. The cooperating eye C. shown by Fig. 4. will be secured to the underl ing edge of the gar" ment which is to be detachably fastened to the outer edge of the garment, and can be forcibly engaged or disengaged from the hook member B in the usual manner. It will be understood. however. that the improvement resides in the eye 6 which is provided upon a forward extension of the base for engaging the free outer edge of the garment to prevent it from turning outwardly when the two edges of the garment are secured together by the fastening means.

Having "thus described the iinventiomrwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

1. A hook fastener including a base formed of a middle strand and two side strands of Wire, the middle strand extending substantially the full length of the base while the side-strands extend in opposite directions from an intermediate portion of the base to opposite ends thereof, and a hook member springing from said-intermediate portionof the base and formed by returning one side strand and deflecting the other side strand upwardly, the middle strand and one side strand terminating at one end of thebase lnva'fastening eye, While the middle strand and other side strand terminate at the other end of the base in fastening e es;-
