To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of )Tew Jersey, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements .in Valve-Operating Mechanism for Engines, of which the following is a specification, refereuce being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to valve mechanism for internal combustion engines, and hasfor its object the provision of simple, etiicient, and smoothly running mechanism ofrthis 5 character which is positive and reliable in its action, which requires no springs for its operation, which leaves valve open to full extent of capacity for an extreme limit of time in intake and exhaust positions, and
which can be easily assembled and readily adjusted in accordance with requirements.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It will, however, be understood that the particular construction described and shown has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely, and that the invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be other-' wise practised without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

Figure 1 is a vertical section of an internal combustion engine provided with valve mechanism constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of the parts shown in Fig. l as viewed from the right in the latter figure.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes an engine cylinder, 13 a piston therein, 14: a
4.5 spark plug, 15 a piston rod, 16 a crank shaft, and 17 a crank case, all of which parts may be of any suitable or well-known construction and arrangement.
18 denotes a valve cylinder arranged in suitable position adjacent the engine cylindcr 12 and having at one end a fuel inlet 19 and at the opposite end an exhaust outlet 20. 21 denotes an annular chamber surrounding the valve cylinder 18, said chamber communicating with said valve cylinder hereinafter described,

As herein shown the valve rod 25 is made in two parts connected by a threaded joint and lock nut 28 to facilitate assembly of the parts and to provide for any necessary adjustment in the length of said valve rod.

Mounted on the cam shaft 29 for rotation therewith is a pair of cams 31 and 310 each having a circular or concentric portion 32, high portion 33, and a low portion 34-.
Secured to the crankcase 17, by means is a bracket 35 to which is pivoted, intermediate its length, a lever 36 having atone end a slot 37 which receives a roller 38 mounted on a pin 39 carried by thebifurcated lower end 40 of the valve rod 25. At opposite sides of its pivot the lever 36 carries pins 4C1 and s10, in threaded engagement with said lever and held in adjusted position with respect thereto by lock nuts 42. Mounted in the lower ends of the pins 41 and e10 are balls 43 which engage the peripheries of the cams 31 and 310, respectively.
The guide 27 and bracket 35 are mounted in suitably formed openings in the crank case 17 and are provided with heads or flanges 4H and 45, respectively, engaging the 5 outer face of said crank case. Said guide and bracket are held in. position by means of a clamp 46 hau ing two arms engaging said guide and bracket, respectively, and secured to the crank case by a bolt 47.
The form and arrangement of the cams 31 and 310 is such that the circular portions 32 of the two cams occupy the same angular position on the shaft 29, while the high portion 33 of the cam 31 coincides angularly with the low portion 34% of the cam 310, and vice versa, as will be clear from Fig. 1. In other words, the arrangement is such that the circular portions of both cams are operative upon the levers 36 at the same time, 116
and the high portion of each cam is operative coincidentally with the low portion of the other. Also the high portion of each cam is complementary to the low portion of the other cam; that is to say, the form of the low portion of each cam is such as cx-r actly to permit the throw of the lever 36 caused by the high portion of the other cam. By virtue of this construction and arrangement, as the cam shaft rotates, the lever is oscillated upon its pivot, the balls 43 remaining always in engagement with their respective cams, so-that said lever is at all times under the positive control of both cams.
When the circular portions 32 of the cams are in operative position, as shown in the drawing, the valve 24 occupies a central position opposite the ports 22, thereby closing communication between the engine cylinder 12 and the valve cylinder 18. This occurs during the compression and explosion strokes of the engine. When the high portion 33 of the cam 310 and the low portion tion of the cam 31 and low portion of the cam 310 are brought to operative position, and the lever 36 is rocked in a counterclockwise direction, depressing the valve 24 below the ports 22, and opening communication between the engine cylinder and the fuel inlet.
By loosening the lock nuts 42, the pins 41 and 410 may be independently adjusted with respect to the lever 36 for the purpose of taking up wear, and to fix the proper limits of movement of 'thovalve 24.
Having thus described my invention I claim andv desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an internal combustion engine, in combination, a cylinder, a valve movable into a plurality of positions to control the admission to and exhaust of gases from said cylinder, pair of cams for operating said 'member,
each of said cams having a circular portion,
a low portion, and a high portion, the circular portions ofbothof said cams being simultaneously operative upon said member, and the high portion of each cam being operative coincidentally with the low portion of the other.
2. In an internal combustion engine, in
combination, a crank case, a valve and, a
guide for said valve rod, a lever for operatingsaid valve rod, a bracket to which said lever is pivoted, and a clamp for securing said guide and bracket to said crank case. '3. In an internal combustion engine, in combination, a crank case, a valve rod, a guide for said valve rod, a lever for operating said valve rod, a bracket to which said lever is pivoted, a clamp having a pair of a valve operating; member, and a arms engaging said guide and bracket, re- 1 spectively, and a bolt for securing said clamp to sald crank case. v
