CLAMP FOR HOLDING CLOTH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Application filed June 19, 1914. Serial No. 846,151.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISRAEL COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of iVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful 11nprovement in Clamps for Holding Cloth, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, refen ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cloth holders and an object of my improvements is to provide a device for conveniently holding the cloth while layingup.
Where garments are made in large quantities, it has been customary to lay-up a large number of layers of cloth upon a table and secure them by placing weights upon them. The adjusting and removal of these weights involves considerable labor and the expenditure of a, considerable amount of time. It is to avoid these disadvantages that I have devised the apparatus hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is an end view of a table or platform with a device embodying my invention adjusted thereto, the clamping bar being shown only in dotted lines.
Fig. 2, is an end elevation of the same looking from the right of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a section taken between the two sets of uprights and looking from the right as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a view of the clamping bar detached from the device.
Fig. 5, is a detailed section in the plane indicated by the line 13-13 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6, is a detailed section showing the shape of the bar intermediate the uprights 01, (Z and 0 c and showing layers of cloth clamped in position.
a indicates the table or platform, 6 is a Hat horizontal portion of the device which lies upon the platform a and maybe secured thereto by screws, or otherwise.
0, 0 indicate short spurs extending upward from the portion 6. 0 c are uprights at one end of the horizontal portion 1). There is a slot or horizontal opening between the parallel inner sides of the uprights 0 0 as shown in Fig. 2. cl, (Z are uprights similar to the uprights 0 0 located at the other end of the horizontal portion 6. There is a cross piece extending between and secured to the upper ends of the uprights (Z, (Z and on this cross piece is pivoted the upper end of a vertical lead-screw 9 having a handle h by which said lead-screw may be rotated. There is a sliding block f adapted at one edge to slide upon a way upon the inner edge of one of the uprights (Z and at the other end provided with threads engaging the threads on the lead-screw 57. There are holes 2', 21 through. the sliding block f.
o is a metal bar pivoted at one end to one of the uprights c 0 and at the other end. provided with a slot which engages like a latch over a pin 1) projecting from the up per end of the other upright 0 The bar 0 secures the upper ends of the uprights a, together when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. :2, but it may be rotated as indicated by the dotted lines in said figure to give access to the slot between said uprights.
j is a clamp bar, having the arbor or spur 7c projecting from one end adapted to fit into one or the other of the holes 6, z in the block 7'. At the other end said clamping bar is provided with an eccentric cam Z integral therewith or rigidly secured thereto and adapted to rotate with said bar and said cam is provided with a handle bar m which extends outwardly and laterally from said cam and this handle bar is furnished at its outer end with a handle n. The handle bar m and handle n serve to manipulate the clamp bar j as well as to rotate the same to turn the cam Zto clamp said bar in position as herein after described.
The operation of the above described device is as follows:
The cloth is placed over the spurs c and between the pairs of uprights c 0 and (Z, (Z. The block f is adjusted to a convenient height and the arbor or spur 7c of the clamping bar 7' is then inserted in one of the holes 2' 1' and the other end of said bar, upon which is the cam Z, is pressed down between the up rights 0 c to press the bar down upon the cloth and the bar, and in pressing down on the handle a the cam is is turned. because of the eccentricity of the handle, thus causing it to bind against the inner edges of the uprights 0 c and clamp this end of the bar in its adjusted position. The turning of the bar j with the cam forces one edge of said bar into the cloth thus securing a better hold thereon. The other end of the clamp ing bar may be pressed down or raised by means of the lead-screw g and handle it thereon, adjusting the block The two holes 2', i provide for a larger adjustment as to the height of the clamping bar j than would be otherwise secured.
Claims.
