INVENTOR A'rTo RN EY JOHN A. HACK, F TONKAWA, OKLAHOMA.
GUARD-HOUSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 15, 1918.
Application filed April 3, 1917. Serial No. 159,576.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. HACK, a citizen of the United .States, residing at w Tonkawa, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented-new and useful Improvements in Guard-Houses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends improvements in guard houses and relates more particularly to a portable bullet proof house or shelter especially designed for the protection of mail clerks, bank employees and the like from assault by burglars, robbers and other persons.
One of the objects of the invention resides in the provision of a portable bullet proof shelter having doors on each side giving easy access to the shelter having a port hole closed by a sliding plate formed with a gun opening and having means for the storage of guns and ammunition.
Another object of the invention is to provide bullet proof guard houses formedof a plurality of plates which may be easily assembled or disassembled and having an opening in the bottom thereof providing means whereby a person working from the interior of the shelter may move the same from place toplace, the shelter being preferably mounted on rollers or casters.
With these and other objects in view as will become-more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
. In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the guard house.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view from front to rear.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view showing the manner of connecting the lower platforms or floor sections, and
Fi 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectiona view on a plane passing centrally through the sliding'port cover.
The guard house is preferably made ovicular in horizontal section and is formed by the front plate 1, side plates 2, 3 and rear plate 4. The front and rear plates which are transversely curved overlap the front and rear edges of the side plates and are secured to these plates by a plurality of bolts 5 and nuts 6. A door 7 is secured to the interior of each of the side plates by suitable hinges 8 and these doors may be locked in closed position by the locking members 9. r r
The doors are somewhat larger than the door openings 10 so that when closed, no bullets may find their way through the door openings.
A preferably rectangular port hole 11 is formed in the curved front wall 1 and this port hole may be entirely closed by a sliding plate or port cover 12 which is formed with a gun opening 13. The port cover is formed with a pair of longitudinal slots 14 through which internal flanges 15 extend. These flanges are formed integral with the front wall 1 adjacent the upper and lower edges of the port hole 11 and serve to slidably secure the port cover in position. T he flanges extend in opposite directions and may be bent into proper retaining position after having been extended through the slots 14. The sliding port cover permits a large range for a gun extended through the gun opening 13 and when desired the plate may be moved so as to move the gun opening out of registration with the port hole.
A platform 16 having an upturned rear wall 17 is secured within the guard house slightlv above the lower edges of the wall thereof. This platform is provided with a flange or ear 18 centrally of its forward edge and with the rearwardly extended flanges 19 at the ends of the wall 17 The ear 18 is socured to the wall 1 by a nut and bolt fastener 20 and the flanges 19 are each secured in position by one of the bolts 5 and nuts 6. This platform is substantially semi-circular in shape and extends rearwardly only as far as the forward edges of the side walls 2 and 3. This platform may be used as a rack for rifles when not in use and also provides a support for a person when firing through the gun opening.
An ammunition receptacle is formed at the rear of the guard house by a shelf or platform 20' having an upturned forward end 21. The platform 20 is substantially on a level with the front platform 16 and is provided with an attaching ear or flange 22 and with the attaching flanges 23 on the terminals of the upturned forward edge 21. The flange or car 22 is secured to the rear wall or plate 4 by a bolt and nut fastening means 24 whereas the flanges 23 are each secured in 27. The platforms 20 and 25 do not extend edges of the vertical walls and held in forwardly beyond the vertical edges of the rear wall 4 and therefore an open space 28 is left at the bottom of the guard house so that a person therein may walk about and push the guard house to any desired position. To render the structure easily movable, I secure to the bottom of the front platform a pair of rollers or casters 29 and to the bottom of the rear platform a 'casterSO.
If desired, a top or cover, generally designated 31 may be mounted on the upper os1- tion by suitable clips or fasteners 32. his top or cover is preferably formed with incllned walls 33 to deflect bullets therefrom.
.From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a simply constructed and practical bullet proof guard house or shelter which may be shifted in different positions by a 80 person working from the interior thereof and which provides means whereby shots may be fired over a wide range.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be clearly understood that I do not wish to be limited to this construction, but may make such changes are will fall within the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is 1-- 21. A guard house having bullet proof walls forming an inclosure, doors in said walls, rollers supporting the guard house, said guard house being partly open at its bottom whereby it may be shifted about by a person on the interior thereof and means permitting firing through one of the walls of the guard house.
2. A guard house having a body formed of a plurality of -walls bolted together, doors for said guard house, a. platform secured within the guard house ad acent the bottom thereof, a second platform secured within the interior may shift the guard house to different positions and means whereby shots may be fired through one of the walls of the guard house.
' 3. A guard house comprising a body formed of a plurality of vertical walls bolted together, a cover for said body having inclined walls, means partially covering the bottom of the body, rollers mounted on said means and supporting the guard house, doors for the guard house, one of the walls being formed with a port hole and a slidable port hole cover having a gun opening therein.
4. In a portable guard house a body formed of a plurality of vertical plates bolted together, bottom platforms within said guard house and leaving the bottom of the house partly open, rollersmounted on said platforms and supporting the guard house, one of the lates being formed with a port hole, .a sli ing port cover formed with a pair of longitudinal slots, and flanges formed on said last mentioned wall and extending through said slots to hold the port cover 1n position, said port cover belng formed with a gun opening adapted to be 1nooved into a free registration with the port ole.
5. A guard house having walls forming an inclosure, said guard house being partially open at its bottom whereby it may be shifted about by a person on the interior thereof, and surface engaging means supporting said house for movement.
6. A guard house having walls forming an inclosure, rollers supporting the guard house, the guard house being partly open at its bottom whereby it may be shifted about 1
